Modified Steering Gear

Condition:
A new steering gear module has been gradually introduced to production in Model Year '96 (as of approx. February).
The differences to the previously used steering gear module are the modified type of seal to the bulkhead and new fastening bolts with an increased tightening torque. Use of this new steering gear in Aftersales makes the 4 steering gear versions previously used superfluous.
When the new steering gear is used in vehicles with the old version, the following work steps deviating from the Service Instructions must be performed
Remedy:
After removing the steering gear, remove the seal (1) the bulkhead - this operation must be performed with great care, or water ingress and interior noise in the region of the bulkhead will arise.
| Before installing the steering gear, align the new bulkhead seal (2) with the designation "OBEN" ( ) towards the identification plate and slide it onto the steering steering gear to side member with new bolts and tighten to 55 Nm / 41 Ibf. ft. | |||
