| Complaint: | Difficulties in programming the IMA codes. |
|---|---|
| Cause: | Confusion with identifying correct IMA code from fuel injector. |
| Production: | All common rail engines from MY 2004 where EDC16 management system is installed might be affected: Vivaro Phase 1 (euro 3) MY 2005 - 2007 G9U-730 engine with MTA Movano Phase 2 (euro 3) MY 2004 - 2007 ZD3-200 / 202 engine, G9U-750 engine with MTA Movano Phase 3 (euro 4) MY 2007 all diesel engines Vivaro Phase 2 (euro 4) MY 2007 all diesel engines |
Remedy:
The IMA codes are 7 digits long and are found printed on the top surface of the injector where the fuel line connection is made. These codes may need to be programmed when the engine ECU is replaced but always necessary after replacing an injector. Each fuel injector has a specific code sequence which is used for calibration purposes so it is very important that the correct code is read from each injector and then programmed against the correct cylinder with the diagnostic tool.
Please also observe the correct orientation of the position for number 1 cylinder of the engine type being inspected. The new M9R diesel now has position number 1 at the timing case end whereas the G9 engine still has number 1 at the gearbox end which was common place on all Vivaro / Movano engines until recently. The ZD3 engine has always had position number 1 at the timing gear end.
If the diagnostic tool refuses a code it is most likely that the code entered is incorrect. Recheck the code from the injector to make sure that the data has been entered correctly.
Possible confusions are: number '1' with the letter 'I' and 'L', number '2' with the letter 'Z' number '5' with the letter 'S' number '6' with the letter 'G' number '8' with the letter 'B'
The letters J and Q and numbers 0 and 9 are not used in IMA coding.
It is often helpful to look at other numbers shown on the injector to help identify the numbers from the letters and the way they are written. In the below drawing the correct IMA code is 68HV7i1 although on first glance may appear to finish with the letters '1L'.
