The Park Pilot is activated automatically when the ignition is switched on and reverse gear is selected. Switch-on monitoring, fault messages and distance information are relayed to the driver acoustically via a loudspeaker. The measuring range is divided into 5 warning zones. The driver is notified when the vehicle approaches an obstacle in accordance with the following table.

The maximum acquisition range of the sensors is limited to 100 cm.
Vehicles with Trailer Hitch
Note. If the vehicle is equipped with a mechanical trailer towing hitch (fixed or detachable), the Park Pilot can be adapted. In order to do this, the cable loop (marked "3") on the system wiring harness must be cut through - see "Park Pilot System Wiring Harness".
A distance offset of 20 cm is set for the middle two sensors (in the software). The continuous tone is then triggered at distances < 50 cm, immediately in front of the middle sensors.
In vehicles with a mechanical switch in the trailer socket (13-pin) the Park Pilot system is deactivated in trailer mode with the trailer cable connected.
Self-Diagnosis
The system is initialised when the ignition is switched on and reverse gear is selected. A brief switch-on tone sounds for 0.5 seconds. If this information is missing, either the loudspeaker or the control unit is defective. An indication of the defective component can be obtained by checking the sensor actuation (slight clicking noise from sensor membrane).
- Sensor is not actuated: control unit is defective.
- Sensor is actuated: loudspeaker is defective.
During operation the control unit performs cyclic monitoring of the system components. The driver is notified of faults by a deep warning tone (600 Hz).
The fault diagnosis system can be used to analyse the defective system components.
If a deep warning tone is emitted at 6 second intervals (3 seconds of tone followed by 3 second break), the vehicle-specific coding plug is not correctly attached. If the coding plug is bridged without the prescribed vehicle-specific resistor, a deep warning tone (continuous tone) is emitted.

Fault Diagnosis
The following section describes fault diagnosis when an acoustic alarm is used to indicate a fault. Fault diagnosis provides the opportunity to localise system component faults more accurately. This mode is activated by removing the coding plug from the control unit before switching on the ignition and selecting reverse gear.
Attention
The area around the rear of the vehicle must be kept clear within a radius of at least 2 metres so that the system measurements that are activated by the fault diagnosis are not affected.
Sensor Fault Diagnosis
An initiation sequence (3 sec.), a break (1 sec.) and then the fault sequence are emitted cyclically via the loudspeaker.

If several sensors are defective, the fault codes for the individual sensors are emitted in sequence (each separated by a 2-second end of sequence break (tone off)). If no sensors are defective the deep alarm tone is emitted cyclically at 6-second intervals (3 seconds of tone, 3 seconds off) in order to indicate that the coding plug has been removed.
Note. It is also possible for the relevant connector or sensor cable to be defective rather than the sensor itself!

Control Unit Fault Diagnosis

Either the control unit hardware is defective (component, battery or sensor voltage, missing identification data) or the coding plug has been short-circuited.
