Steering Column Replace (Captiva)

Note: Remove the steering column only if:

Note: The steering column is extremely susceptible to damage after it has been removed from the vehicle. Dropping the column assembly on its end or hammering the end of the steering shaft can collapse the steering shaft or loosen plastic injections which maintain column rigidity. Leaning on the column can cause it to bend or deform. Any of the above damage can impair the column's collapsible design. If it is necessary to remove the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller.

Remove

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and let the vehicle sit for 1 minute to deactivate the airbag.
2. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replace (Captiva) .
3. Remove the headlamp/turn signal switch and lever. Refer to Headlamp/Turn signal Switch and Lever Replace (Captiva) .
4. Remove the wiper/cruise control switch and lever. Refer to Wiper/Cruise Control Switch and Lever Replace (Captiva) .
5. Remove the clock spring. Refer to Clock Spring Replace .
6. Remove the driver knee bolster. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replace .

7. Remove the ignition switch. Refer to Ignition Switch Replace .
8. Remove the key hole lamp. Refer to Key Hole Lamp Replace .
9. Remove the immobilizer module, if equipped. Refer to Immobilizer (PK3+) Replace (Captiva) .
10. Remove the key cylinder. Refer to Key Cylinder Replace (Captiva) .
11. Remove the SSPS control module. Refer to Speed Sensitive Power Steering (SSPS) Control Module Replace .
12. Remove the steering shaft universal joint pinch bolt and the steering column assembly lower bracket bolt.
13. Remove the steering angle sensor. Refer to Steering Angle Sensor Replace .

14. Remove the steering column assembly lower bracket bolts.

15. Remove the steering column assembly upper bracket bolts.
16. Remove the steering column assembly from the vehicle.

Install

Important: For proper installation of the steering column, be sure the steering wheel spokes are centred diagonally and pointed downward, and that the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

1. Install the steering angle sensor. Refer to Steering Angle Sensor Replace .
2. Carefully guide the steering shaft into the universal joint.

Note: Provide support for the steering column assembly until the mounting bolts are fastened. Do not let the steering column assembly hang unsupported.

3. Install the pinch bolt into the non-threaded hole of the flange.

Tighten

Tighten the steering column shaft securing bolt to the universal joint pinch to 34 N•m (25 lb-ft).

4. Install the steering column assembly lower bracket bolt and upper bracket bolts.

Tighten

Tighten the steering column assembly lower bracket bolt to 25 N•m (18 lb-ft).

Tighten the steering column assembly upper bracket bolts to 22 N•m (16 lb-ft).

5. Install the SSPS control module. Refer to Speed Sensitive Power Steering (SSPS) Control Module Replace .
6. Install the key cylinder. Refer to Key Cylinder Replace (Captiva) .
7. Install the immobilizer module, if equipped. Refer to Immobilizer (PK3+) Replace (Captiva) .
8. Install the key hole lamp. Refer to Key Hole Lamp Replace .
9. Install the ignition switch. Refer to Ignition Switch Replace .
10. Install the driver knee bolster. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replace .
11. Install the clock spring. Refer to Clock Spring Replace .

12. Install the wiper/cruise control switch and lever. Refer to Wiper/Cruise Control Switch and Lever Replace (Captiva) .
13. Install the headlamp/turn signal switch and lever. Refer to Headlamp/Turn signal Switch and Lever Replace (Captiva) .
14. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replace (Captiva) .
15. Connect the negative battery cable.
