Rack and Pinion Assembly Replace

Remove

1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
2. Remove the exhaust front pipe. For Z 20 DMH, Z 20 DM refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replace . For Z 24 XE refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replace . For Z 32 SE refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replace .
3. Remove the transmission rear mount assembly. For Z 20 DMH, Z 20 DM refer to Transmission Rear Mount Assembly Replace . For Z 24 XE refer to Transmission Rear Mount Assembly Replace . For Z 32 SE refer to Transmission Rear Mount Assembly Replace .
4. For AWD, remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replace .

5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
6. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
7. Remove the wheels.
8. Disconnect the power steering gear fluid inlet pipe.

Important: Observe relevant environmental regulations when disposing of used lubricants.

9. Disconnect the power steering gear fluid outlet pipe. Place a drain pan under the steering gear to catch the power steering fluid.

10. Rotate the steering wheel in order to gain access to the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
11. Disconnect the connector of SSPS, if equipped.
12. Scribe a mark on the stub shaft housing that lines up with a mark on the intermediate shaft lower coupling.
13. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.

14. Remove the outer tie rod nuts and disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.

15. Remove the left mounting bolt from the steering gear.

16. Remove the right mounting bolt from steering gear.
17. Remove the rack and pinion assembly from the vehicle.

Install

1. Install the rack and pinion assembly from below. The steering gear must be in a straight-ahead position, and the steering wheel spokes must be vertical and pointing to the left. Align the marks on the shafts to ensure proper positioning. Seat the stub shaft into the intermediate shaft.

2. Install the left and right mounting bolts on the steering gear.

Tighten

Tighten the steering gear mounting bracket bolts and nuts to 110 N•m (81 lb-ft).

3. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckle.
4. Install the outer tie rod nuts.

Tighten

Tighten the outer tie rod nuts to 50 N•m (37 lb-ft).

5. Install the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt.

Tighten

Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 34 N•m (25 lb-ft).

6. Connect the power steering gear fluid inlet pipe.

Tighten

Tighten the steering gear inlet pipe fitting to 28 N•m (21 lb-ft).

7. Connect the power steering gear fluid outlet pipe.

Tighten

Tighten the steering gear outlet pipe fitting to 28 N•m (21 lb-ft).

8. For AWD, install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replace .
9. Install the transmission rear mount assembly. For Z 20 DMH, Z 20 DM refer to Transmission Rear Mount Assembly Replace For Z 24 XE refer to Transmission Rear Mount Assembly Replace For Z 32 SE refer to Transmission Rear Mount Assembly Replace .
10. Install the exhaust front pipe. For Z 20 DMH, Z 20 DM refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replace . For Z 24 XE refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replace . For Z 32 SE refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replace .
11. Install the wheels.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Do a straight-ahead check.

Note: When adding fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use power steering fluid DEXRON®-IID. Failure to use the proper fluid will cause hose and seal damage and fluid leaks.

14. Refill the power steering system and check for leaks. If leaks are found, correct the cause of the leak and bleed the system.
15. Connect the negative battery cable.
