Engine Oil Pan Removal Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight X

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. To trouble shoot engine mechanical components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

2.0L (122") 4-CYLINDER VIN K OR M

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle at lift points. Remove right front wheel and right front splash shield. Remove exhaust pipe shield. Drain crankcase, remove exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove A/C brace at starter and bracket.
2. Remove flywheel access cover, remove starter bracket and starter. Remove bolts from right side support. Lower support slightly to gain clearance. Remove automatic transaxle oil filter and extension (if equipped). Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

2.0L (122") 4-CYLINDER VIN 1

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove exhaust pipe shield. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase, remove A/C brace at starter and at A/C bracket (if equipped). Remove flywheel access cover and starter. Remove A/C brace (if equipped).
2. Remove 4 right support bolts and lower support enough to aid oil pan removal. Remove automatic transaxle oil filter and extension (if equipped). Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

Calais

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase and disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and hangers and move out of way. Disconnect starter and remove flywheel access cover. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

Cutlass Ciera

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove nuts from front engine-to-cradle. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and converter. Remove flywheel access cover and starter. Remove splash shield, power steering pump and bracket. Using Engine Support Fixture (J-28467), raise engine and remove engine front support bracket. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

Note. Upon installation of 2.8L V6 oil pan, timing gear cover bolts should be installed last. Cover bolts are installed at an angle. Holes align after pan bolts are snugged.

2.8L (173") V6

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase, remove flywheel access cover and starter. Remove oil pan bolts, and oil pan.

3.0L (181") & 3.8L (231") V6

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase and remove oil filter. Remove flywheel access cover, oil pan bolts, oil pan tensioner spring and oil pan.

All Models Except Toronado

1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove engine oil dipstick. Remove upper fan shroud screws. Raise and support vehicle, drain crankcase. Remove flywheel access cover.
2. Disconnect exhaust and crossover pipes. Remove oil cooler lines at filter base and remove starter. Install Engine Support Fixture (BT-6501) and raise front of engine. Remove engine mount attaching bolt. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

Toronado

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Remove transaxle converter cover. Remove oil pan retaining bolts and oil pan.
