HVAC System - Automatic: Diagnosis Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight X

Retrieving DTC

Diagnostic Troubles Codes (DTC) can be retrieved only by using a Tech 1 scan tester. See manufacturer's instructions. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) table.

Clearing DTC

Use Tech 1 scan tester to clear DTC. Also if ignition has cycled (has been turned on) 50 times and no DTCs have set, history DTCs are automatically cleared from memory.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

  1. Perform NORMAL SYSTEM RESPONSE TEST. If any of the following conditions exist, go to appropriate test under TESTING. If none of the following conditions exists, go to next step. Blower motor runs at high speed only. Blower motor does not run at any speed. Air flows from wrong outlets.
  2. Check for DTC. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC(s) are set, go to next step. If no DTCs are set, check appropriate component. See TESTING.
  3. If no current DTCs are present (only history DTCs are present), go to next step. If current and history DTCs are present, repair cause of combined current and history DTCs first. See appropriate test under TESTING. After repairing cause of combined current and history DTC, repair cause of any other history DTC.
  4. Perform NORMAL SYSTEM RESPONSE TEST again. If no DTC(s) are set, check for intermittent electrical connections. If DTC(s) are set, see appropriate test under TESTING.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC)

ENTERING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS

Note. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) can only be displayed using a Tech 1 scan tester.

Turn ignition on. Connect Tech 1 scan tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel, near steering column. Retrieve DTC, following manufacturer's instructions. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) table. Refer to appropriate test procedure. To test individual components, see TESTING. Clear DTC after completing repairs. See CLEARING DTC under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

NORMAL SYSTEM RESPONSE TEST

Note. Perform following procedure to determine if system is operating correctly. If system does not operate as specified, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE.

DTC 052

Note. DTC 052 may set if the battery was recently disconnected or discharged.

TESTING

A/C-HEATER CONTROL TEST

  1. Perform NORMAL SYSTEM RESPONSE TEST. Ambient temperature must be at least 48°F (9°C). Bring engine to operating temperature and let idle. Set air delivery mode to PASS TEMP. Set A/C-heater control panel temperature to 85°F (29°C) and passenger control panel to coldest temperature setting. Let system stabilize. Compare outlet air temperatures at left center and right center outlets. If right center outlet air temperature is 8-15°F (4-11°C) cooler than left center, go to next step. If outlet air is not cooler, check door motor for proper mounting, broken components or missing/disconnected linkage. Repair as necessary.
  2. Set A/C-heater control panel temperature to 85°F (29°C) and passenger control panel to hottest temperature setting. Let system stabilize. Compare outlet temperatures at left center and right center outlets. If right center outlet air temperature is 8-15°F (4-11°C) warmer than left center, system is operating properly. If outlet air is not warmer, check door motor for proper mounting, broken components or missing/disconnected linkage. Repair as necessary.

VACUUM CONTROLS TEST

  1. Connect Tech 1 scan tester to DLC, located beneath instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select DATA LIST. Observe vacuum solenoids No. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Press HEAT button on A/C-heater control panel. If vacuum solenoid No. 3 is on and vacuum solenoids No. 1, 2 and 4 are off, go to next step. If vacuum solenoids are not as specified, go to step 3).
  2. Press AUTO button. Press and hold TEMP button until temperature setting decreases to 60°F (18°C). If vacuum solenoid No. 3 is off and vacuum solenoids No. 1, 2 and 4 are on, go to step 4). If vacuum solenoids are not as specified, inspect programmer connector for proper terminal contact. If terminals are okay, replace programmer.
  3. Using Tech 1 scan tester, select MISC. TESTS. Command vacuum solenoid No. 3 to turn on. Select DATA LIST, and observe vacuum solenoid No. 3. If vacuum solenoid No. 3 is on, inspect A/C-heater control connector terminals for proper contact. If connector terminals are okay, replace A/C-heater control panel. If vacuum solenoid No. 3 is off, inspect programmer connector for proper terminal contact. If terminals are okay, replace programmer.
  4. Disconnect programmer vacuum connector, located under right side of instrument panel. Perform vacuum tests as specified. (Схема №4) If vacuum tests are as specified, temporarily substitute known-good programmer. Retest system. If a port holds vacuum but air does not flow from outlet, inspect associated door.
