MODEL IDENTIFICATION
Vehicle model is identified by fourth character of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). VIN is stamped on metal pad on top of left end of instrument panel, near windshield.
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See the COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery. |
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect shift linkage from transaxle. Disconnect all necessary wiring harness connectors. Install appropriate engine support.
- Remove upper transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove left and right-side splash shields. Remove wheel speed sensor harness from left-side suspension support and both front wheel speed sensors.
- Separate tie rod ends and lower ball joints from steering knuckles. Remove front suspension support brace. Remove engine strut mount. Place lift support under suspension support assembly and remove bolts. Lower suspension support assembly enough to disconnect power steering hoses and steering coupler.
- Remove drive axles from transaxle. See the AXLE SHAFT article in DRIVE AXLES section. Remove transaxle-to-engine brace. Remove shift cable bracket. Remove starter. Remove torque converter cover. Mark torque converter in relation to flexplate for alignment reference during installation. Remove torque converter-to-flexplate bolts.
- Disconnect transaxle oil cooler lines. Remove brake hose bracket from body. Remove transaxle mount pipe expansion bolt and transaxle mount-to-body bolts. Lower vehicle.
- Lower engine/transaxle assembly with engine support enough to remove transaxle. Raise vehicle and support transaxle. Remove remaining engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts. Lower transaxle and remove from vehicle.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61419-S23373805562001100200000) . Apply a thin film of chassis grease to torque converter pilot hub. Adjust throttle valve cable and shift cable. See ADJUSTMENTS in TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article.
- When connecting Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch harness connector, ensure "T" latch on connector is secure. This will prevent intermittent operation of switch due to poor connections. Fill transaxle with appropriate fluid. DO NOT overfill.
