- Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect electrical harness at bulkhead. Disconnect electrical connector at brake cylinder.
- Remove accelerator cable and vacuum hoses from carburetor. Remove power steering hose at cut-off switch. Remove vacuum hoses at MAP sensor and canister. Disconnect A/C relay switches.
- Remove power steering return hose at pump. Disconnect ECM wire connections. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses. Remove electrical connections from temperature switch at thermostat housing.
- Disconnect transaxle shift cable at transaxle. Raise and support vehicle. Remove speedometer cable. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and remove from converter. Remove heater hoses and fuel lines. Remove transaxle cooler lines.
- Remove both front wheels. Remove right spoiler section and splash shield. Remove brake calipers, and support with wire. Remove tie rod ends.
- Disconnect electrical connections at A/C compressor. Remove A/C compressor and mounting brackets. Support A/C compressor with wire in wheel opening. Remove front suspension attaching bolts. CAUTION: Be sure to support vehicle and transaxle weight during following steps.
- Lower vehicle. Support front of vehicle by placing 2 jack stands under core support. Position jack at rear of cowl with 4" x 4" x 6' timber spanning vehicle width. Raise vehicle enough to remove jack stands.
- Position 4-wheel dolly under transaxle assembly with three 4" x 4" x 12" wood blocks as support. Allow support rails to hang free.
- Slightly lower vehicle onto 4-wheel dolly. Remove rear transaxle mounting bolts. Remove 2 engine support-to-body mounting bolts behind right inner axle universal joint.
- Remove one mounting bolt and nut from right chassis side rail-to-engine mount bracket. Remove 6 strut attaching nuts. Raise vehicle. Allow engine, transaxle and suspension to rest on 4-wheel dolly.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Remove power steering pump (if equipped). Remove window washer bottle. Remove A/C relay bracket at bulkhead connector (if equipped). Remove bulkhead connector.
- Remove cruise control servo bracket (if equipped). Disconnect all vacuum hoses and wiring to engine. Remove bolts attaching vacuum booster to master cylinder. Lay vacuum booster aside. Remove heater hose at hot water pipe. Remove fan assembly. Remove horn. Remove fuel injection linkage.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove heater hose and fuel line at intake manifold. Remove A/C compressor brace (if equipped). Remove exhaust shield. Remove starter. Remove exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove front wheels.
- Remove stabilizer bar at lower control arms. Remove ball joints from steering knuckle. Remove drive axles at transaxle. Remove transaxle strut. Remove inner fender shield, A/C drive belt and compressor (if equipped).
- Remove front motor mount nuts. On manual transaxle equipped vehicles, remove clutch cable at transaxle. On automatic transaxle equipped vehicles, remove detent cable at transaxle. On all models, install engine lift. Remove transaxle mount and bracket. Remove engine.
To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain coolant. Remove air cleaner duct, fan shroud, upper radiator support and cooling fan. Remove oil filter.
- On A/C equipped models, discharge A/C system. Remove coupled hose assembly at A/C compressor and discard "O" rings. On all models, disconnect and label all linkage, hoses, vacuum lines and electrical wiring that will interfere with engine removal.
- Remove power steering pivot bolt, pump, and drive belt. Position power steering pump aside. Disconnect exhaust manifold and front engine mount. Install Engine Support (J 28467). Raise vehicle.
- Remove front right wheel assembly. Remove right lower splash shield and radiator air deflector. Separate ball joints from steering knuckles. Support suspension crossmember and stabilizer shaft. Remove suspension support retaining bolts.
- Remove suspension supports, crossmember and stabilizer shaft as an assembly. Install Drive Axle Seal Protector (J 34754) on drive axle boots. Remove axle shafts from transaxle and position aside.
- Remove nut from transaxle mount through bolt and rear engine mount through bolt. Remove engine mount body bracket. Position suitable support below engine and lower car onto support.
- Remove transaxle through bolt. Mark support fixture hooks so that positioning can be duplicated when reinstalling engine. Remove engine support fixture. Raise vehicle off engine and transaxle assembly. Separate engine from transaxle.
To install, reverse removal procedure. When tightening transaxle mount through bolt, ensure all related gaps are within .08" (2 mm) of each other. Check all fluid levels.
Removal (Cutlass Calais - Automatic Transaxle)
- Disconnect battery cables. Drain engine coolant. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect ECM connections and feed harness through bulkhead. Disconnect engine wiring harness. Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses.
- Disconnect A/C compressor, leaving hoses attached and move aside. Disconnect transaxle strut (front). Disconnect fuel lines at TBI. Disconnect cooler lines and shifter linkage.
- Disconnect downshift cable. Disconnect throttle cable at TBI. Disconnect engine grounds. Remove multi-relay bracket. Raise and support vehicle. Remove power steering line bracket from engine.
- Remove front wheels. Disconnect brake calipers and tie to springs. Remove brake rotors. Remove knuckle-to-strut bolts, 2 per side. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and hangers, and swing aside.
- Loosen remaining 8 body-to-cradle bolts at ends. Remove one bolt at each end of each cradle side, leaving one bolt per corner. Place jack stands under front of body. Move hoist back to body pan with 4" x 4" x 6' timber between hoist and vehicle.
- Lift hoist and remove jack stands. Place dolly under engine transaxle assembly with 4" x 4" blocks to maintain position on dolly. Lower vehicle, allowing engine/transaxle assembly to rest on dolly.
- Remove engine mount bolts and right front bracket. Remove remaining 4 cradle-to-body bolts. Lift vehicle off engine/transaxle assembly. Separate engine and transaxle.
To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal (Cutlass Ciera)
- Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and heat tube. Disconnect engine wiring harness connector. Disconnect all vacuum lines. Remove throttle and transaxle linkage at fuel injection assembly.
- Remove upper radiator hose. Remove A/C compressor from brackets and position aside with hoses attached (if equipped). Remove front engine strut assembly. Disconnect heater hose at intake manifold. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts, leaving top 2 bolts in place.
- Remove front mount-to-cradle nuts. Remove forward exhaust pipe. Remove flywheel inspection cover. Remove starter. Remove drive plate-to-converter bolts. Remove power steering pump and position aside. Remove remaining heater hose and lower radiator hose.
- Remove rear transaxle support bracket bolts. Remove fuel line at fuel filter. With floor jack and block of wood under transaxle, raise engine until front mount studs clear cradle.
- Attach engine lift to engine. Remove 2 remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove engine.
To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect battery cables. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Remove engine strut bracket from radiator support and swing rearward.
- Remove A/C compressor from bracket and set aside. Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect accelerator cable and detent cable (if equipped). Disconnect engine harness from ECM and pull connector through front of dash.
- Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from engine. Remove power steering pump and bracket from engine (if equipped).
- Disconnect fuel lines at rubber hose connections at left side of engine compartment. Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove engine front mount-to-cradle and mount-to-engine bracket retaining nuts from right side of vehicle. Disconnect battery cables from engine at starter and transaxle housing bolt.
- Remove starter. Remove transaxle inspection cover plate and disconnect drive plate-to-converter bolts. Remove crankshaft lower pulley, and remove all belts. Disconnect exhaust pipe.
- Remove lower transaxle-to-engine bolt from rear of engine. Disconnect power steering cut-off switch (if equipped).
- Lower vehicle. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Make note of ground stud location. Place support under transaxle rear extension. Install engine lift and remove engine.
To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal (Cutlass Supreme)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove hood. Remove airflow tube at air cleaner and throttle valve. Remove A.I.R. belt and serpentine belt cover.
- Disconnect and label all linkage, hoses, vacuum lines and electrical wiring that will interfere with engine removal. Remove A/C mounting bolts from mounting bracket. Remove power steering pump and set aside. Remove EGR from exhaust.
- Raise vehicle. Remove A/C from engine. Remove drive plate cover. Remove starter, torque converter bolts and transaxle bracket. Remove engine front mount retaining nuts. Disconnect exhaust pipe at crossover.
- Lower vehicle. Disconnect engine torque struts. Remove coolant recovery bottle. Disconnect left crossover pipe to manifold clamp. Pull engine assembly forward and support. Disconnect right crossover pipe to manifold clamp.
- Remove engine support and allow engine to move to normal position. Support transaxle. Remove bolts attaching transaxle to engine. Attach lifting device to engine and remove engine.
To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal (Cutlass Calais)
- Raise hood and cover fenders. Scribe marks around hood hinges and remove hood. Remove negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter.
- Remove drive plate cover. Use a scribe to mark drive plate-to-torque converter relationship to assure proper reassembly. Remove drive plate-to-torque converter bolts.
- Disconnect A/C compressor and wiring connector and set aside. Drain cooling system and remove lower radiator hose. Remove right front motor mount bolts. Remove right inner fender splash shield.
- Remove transaxle-to-engine mount bolt located between transaxle and cylinder block. Remove rear motor mount nuts. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove all heater hoses.
- Lower vehicle. Remove serpentine drive belt, alternator and power steering pump. Remove mass airflow sensor and intake duct. Disconnect electrical connector and remove cooling fan.
- Remove upper radiator hose and radiator. Position engine lift. Remove left upper transaxle mount. Remove master cylinder. Remove fuel lines at fuel rail. Remove TV and cruise control cable at throttle body. Remove all remaining engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts. Remove engine.
To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Disconnect vacuum lines. Disconnect T.V cable and accelerator linkage at carburetor.
- Remove alternator. Disconnect engine wiring harness connector. Disconnect ground strap from engine at engine forward strut. Disconnect radiator hoses from radiator. Remove heater hoses from engine.
- Remove fan blower motor. Remove fuel line. Remove damper at hood and support hood in full open position. Remove A.I.R. pump and mounting bracket. Raise and support vehicle. Remove power steering lines at steering gear. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove front engine mount-to-cradle nuts.
- Disconnect battery cables at starter and transaxle housing. Remove converter inspection cover. After marking converter drive plate position, remove converter-to-drive plate bolts. Remove transaxle-to-engine block support bracket bolts. Lower vehicle. Position support under transaxle rear extension.
- Remove engine strut bracket from radiator support and swing rearward. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts, noting location of ground stud.
- Remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines connected. Attach engine lift and remove engine.
To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal (Delta 88, Ninety-Eight, & Toronado)
- Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Remove negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Remove cooling fan, pulleys and belts. Disconnect mass airflow sensor wiring and air intake duct.
- Disconnect A/C compressor and set aside (if equipped). Raise and support vehicle. Remove exhaust pipe. Remove engine mount bolts. Remove drive line vibration absorber. Disconnect starter wiring and starter.
- Remove power steering hoses at steering gear assembly. Remove lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. One bolt is located between transaxle case and engine block. Remove flywheel cover. Remove flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Use a scribe to mark flywheel-to-torque converter to assure proper reassembly.
- Remove engine support bracket at transaxle. Lower vehicle. Remove radiator and heater hoses at engine. Remove alternator and rotate to cowl. Disconnect engine wiring harness. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove engine assembly.
To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and hot air pipe. Mark hinges for reassembly and remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine ground strap from right cylinder head to cowl.
- Remove radiator hoses. Remove automatic transmission cooler lines from radiator. Remove all heater hoses and vacuum hoses connected to engine.
- Disconnect power steering pump with hoses attached. Remove A/C compressor (if equipped), and position aside with hoses and brackets attached.
- Disconnect fuel hose from fuel line. Disconnect all wiring from engine. Disconnect accelerator cable. Remove radiator. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect exhaust and crossover pipes at manifold.
- Remove torque converter cover and drive plate-to-converter bolts. Remove engine mount bolts or nuts. Remove 3 transmission-to-engine bolts on right side. Remove starter and secure to frame with wires attached.
- Lower vehicle. Install engine lift. Place a wood block on top of a jack and slightly raise transmission. Remove 3 transmission-to-engine bolts on left side. Remove engine.
To install, reverse removal procedure.
