Code Types

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are categorized by type. The DTC type relates to how the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) operates and how the fault data is stored when a particular DTC fails. In some cases there may be exceptions to this structure. The following list describes the general characteristics of the 3 different types of DTC categories

  1. Type "A" This type DTC is an emission related DTC. The PCM will illuminate the MIL the first time a failure occurs and will store a DTC in memory. The PCM will capture freeze frame/failure records data.
  2. Type "B" This type DTC is an emissions related DTC. The first time a failure occurs, the PCM will not illuminate the MIL. The PCM will store a DTC in memory (as last test failed). The PCM will capture freeze frame/failure records data. If the failure occurs a second time within 2 consecutive drive cycles, the PCM will illuminate the MIL. The PCM will store the DTC in memory (DTC will now appear in history) and capture freeze frame/failure records data. If the failure occurs a second time but not within 2 consecutive drive cycles, the PCM will not illuminate the MIL. PCM will store the DTC in memory (as failed last test) and update failure records data only.
  3. Type "C" This type DTC is a non-emissions related DTC. The PCM will not illuminate the MIL. The PCM will store the DTC in memory and capture failure records data. Some DTCs may also illuminate an auxiliary service light, and/or cause a message to be displayed on the driver information center depending on how the vehicle is equipped. The light/message request occurs at the time of the first failure.

Freeze Frame

Government regulations require that engine operating conditions be captured whenever the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is illuminated. The data captured is called freeze frame data. The freeze frame data is very similar to a single record of operating conditions. Whenever the MIL is illuminated, the corresponding record of operating conditions is recorded as freeze frame data. A subsequent failure will not update the recorded information. Freeze frame data can only be overwritten with data associated with a misfire or fuel trim malfunction. Data from these faults take precedence over data associated with any other fault. The freeze frame data will not be erased unless the associated history DTC is cleared. The freeze frame data parameters stored with a DTC failure include the following.

  1. Air/Fuel Ratio
  2. Mass Airflow Sensor
  3. Fuel Trim (Both Short Term And Long Term For Both Cylinder Banks)
  4. Engine Speed
  5. Intake Air Temperature
  6. Engine Coolant Temperature
  7. Vehicle Speed
  8. Throttle Position Angle
  9. Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure
  10. Fuel System Status

Failure Records

When a diagnostic test fails, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) stores the information as failure records data. Unlike freeze frame data, failure records are stored for multiple Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) or non-emission related DTCs (DTCs that do not illuminate the MIL). The failure records information is updated the first time the test fails during each ignition cycle. Freeze frame/failure records data may be retrieved by using a scan tool. If more than one DTC is set, review the odometer or engine run time data located in the freeze frame/failure records info to determine the most current failure. The stored information will look like normal PCM data. Always capture freeze frame/failure records data information with the scan tool before proceeding with any diagnosis. Loss of this data may prevent accurate diagnosis of an intermittent condition.

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE

After replacing Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or if program needs to be updated, refer to latest Techline information on PCM reprogramming. PCM can only be programmed using Tech 2 and Techline terminal, or by using a personal computer equipped with the current service programming system software installed. After reprogramming, perform INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES , CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE , OIL LIFE INDEX RESET , IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE and PROGRAMMING THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS .

CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE

WARNINGBefore performing crankshaft position system variation learn procedure, always set parking brake and block drive wheels in order to prevent personal injury. Release throttle immediately when engine starts to decelerate in order to eliminate over revving engine. Once learn procedure has been completed, control module will return engine control to operator and engine will respond to throttle position.

Battery must be fully charged and in good condition. Scan tool connection at Data Link Connector (DLC) should be clean and tight before starting crankshaft position system variation learn procedure.

  1. Close hood. Block drive wheels and set vehicle parking brake. Turn all accessories off. Start engine. Ensure engine is at least 158°F (70°C). Turn ignition off. Using scan tool, select and enable CRANKSHAFT POSITION SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE. Start engine.
  2. Ensure transaxle is Park. Press and hold brake pedal firmly. Increase engine speed until fuel cutoff is reached at 5150 RPM. Immediately release accelerator pedal after fuel cutoff is reached. The crankshaft position system variation compensating values are learned when the RPM decreases back to idle. Monitor status for DTC P1336.
  3. If scan tool indicates DTC P1336 ran and passed, crankshaft position system variation learn procedure is complete. If scan tool indicates DTC P1336 failed or did not run, check for additional DTCs and repair as necessary. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-121492-S42745357372001083100000) . If only DTC P1336 is set, repeat crankshaft position system variation learn procedure as necessary.

IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE

Note. When Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or battery is disconnected, PCM loses power, or PCM is reprogrammed, PCM learned idle position is lost. When learned idle position is lost, engine idle will be unstable.

Start engine and allow it to idle for 15 seconds. Turn ignition off. Wait 15 seconds. Restart engine and check for proper idle operation.

PROGRAMMING THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS

If replacing a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with a replacement part, after programming, these modules will learn incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. A PCM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn current vehicle's password.

  1. Turn ignition on. Attempt to start engine, then release key to ON position (vehicle will not start). Observe SECURITY indicator. After about 10 minutes, SECURITY indicator will turn off. Turn ignition off and wait 5 seconds.
  2. Repeat step 1 2 more times for a total of 3 cycles in 30 minutes. Vehicle is now ready to relearn key transponder information and/or passwords on next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK position.
  3. Start engine. Vehicle has now learned the key transponder information and the PCM has now learned the fuel continue password. Using scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed.

DRIVE CYCLES

For drive cycle procedure, see INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE SYSTEM CHECK .

Conditions For Updating I/M System Status

Each system requires at least one, and sometimes several, diagnostic tests. The results of these tests are reported by a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). A system monitor is complete when either all of the DTCs comprising the monitor have run and passed, or when any one of the DTCs comprising the monitor have illuminated the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). Once all of the tests are completed, the I/M system status display will indicate YES in the completed column. For example, when the HO2S heater test indicates YES, all 3 of the oxygen sensor heaters and circuits have been diagnosed. The I/M system status will indicate NO under the completed column when any of the required tests for that system have not run. The following is a list of conditions that will set the I/M system status indicator to NO

  1. Vehicle is new from the factory and has not yet been driven through the necessary drive conditions in order to complete the tests.
  2. Battery has been disconnected or discharged to less than operating voltage.
