HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING

  1. Ensure hoses do not touch any part of vehicle and all connections tight. Remove pump reservoir cap. Fill pump reservoir with fluid to FULL COLD level. Attach Bleeding Adapter (J-43485) to vacuum pump. Connect adapter to pump reservoir opening. Apply 20 in Hg of vacuum. Wait 5 minutes. Typical vacuum drop is 2-3 in Hg.
  2. Reinstall pump reservoir cap. Start engine. Allow engine to idle. Turn off engine. Allow fluid to stabilize. DO NOT turn steering wheel to lock position. Start engine. Allow engine to idle. Turn steering wheel 180-360 degrees in both directions 5 times. Turn ignition off. Check fluid level. Repeat step 1 .
  3. If vacuum drop is excessive, pump is probably damaged. Check power steering pump and steering system. See appropriate base power steering article.
  4. Observe fluid. If condition continues, replace following parts: Return hose clamps Return hose "O" rings. Pressure hose "O" rings. Gear cylinder line "O" rings. Reservoir pump "O" ring. Repeat bleed procedure from beginning. Drive vehicle approximately 10 mile to warm system to operating temperature. Evaluate vehicle on smooth flat surface. Verify following conditions: There is smooth power assist. The vehicle operates quietly. The pump maintains proper fluid level. There is no leaking in steering system. The fluid is free of foam or discoloration.
