MANUFACTURER'S SUGGESTED SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
The manufacturer recommends the belt be replaced every 60,000 miles.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. |
Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove upper radiator hose. Remove undertray from right side. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove water pump pulley.
- Place reference mark on crank angle sensor and timing belt cover for reassembly reference. (Scheme 3) Remove crank angle sensor. Support engine and remove front engine mount support.
- Remove upper timing belt cover. (Scheme 3) Align timing marks on camshaft sprockets. (Scheme 4) Remove right side inner fender panel. Remove crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover. Loosen tensioner pulley nut and release tension. Remove timing belt.
- Using dial indicator, check camshaft sprocket runout. Replace sprocket if runout exceeds.004" (.10 mm). To remove camshaft sprocket, remove camshaft cover and hold hex area of camshaft. Remove sprocket retaining bolts. (Scheme 5)
- Remove camshaft sprocket. If crankshaft sprocket requires removal, note direction of sprocket plates prior to removal. (Scheme 3) Remove plates and sprocket.

Inspection
- Inspect timing belt for wear on rounded edges of drive teeth. Inspect belt for signs of oil contamination. Replace belt if damaged or contaminated.
- Check tensioner and idler pulleys for smooth rotation. Inspect tensioner pulley return spring for distortion or corrosion.
Installation
- Install crankshaft sprocket and sprocket plates. Sprocket plates must be installed with flat side against crankshaft sprocket.
- Ensure No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Align camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. (Scheme 4) Install timing belt. Ensure 39 teeth exist between marks on camshaft sprockets, and 48 teeth between crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. (Scheme 4)
- Loosen tensioner pulley nut. Install crankshaft bolt and a spacer. Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions. Tighten tensioner pulley nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/nissan/pulsar/n13-1986-1990/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-16l-18l-dohc__torque-specifications). Ensure all marks are aligned. Install timing belt covers.
- Install crankshaft pulley and washer. Install engine mount. Install crank angle sensor and water pump pulley. Ensure reference marks on crank angle sensor are aligned. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/nissan/pulsar/n13-1986-1990/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-16l-18l-dohc__torque-specifications).
- Install accessory drive belts. Adjust drive belts to proper tension. Install upper radiator hose and refill cooling system.
