TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING

  1. Enter vehicle and sit in driver's seat. Close and lock all doors. Insert and remove key from ignition switch more than 6 times within 10 seconds. If successful, hazard warning lights will flash.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ACC position. Press any button on new transmitter once. Hazard warning lights should flash if input is successful. New transmitter identification code is now entered into SECU memory and old transmitter code is erased.
  3. To program an additional transmitter, lock and unlock doors using driver's side door lock switch. Press any button on second transmitter. New transmitter identification code is now entered into SECU memory.
  4. Unlock and open driver's side door. Programming is complete. Check transmitter operation.

ALL REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS INOPERATIVE

Perform TRANSMITTER BATTERY CHECK and POWER SUPPLY & GROUND CIRCUIT CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If no problem is found, replace transmitter. See TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING .

NEW TRANSMITTER CANNOT BE PROGRAMMED

Perform TRANSMITTER BATTERY CHECK , KEY SWITCH CHECK , DOOR SWITCH INPUT SIGNAL CHECK , DRIVERS DOOR LOCK SWITCH CHECK and POWER SUPPLY & GROUND CIRCUIT CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If no problem is found, replace transmitter. See TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING .

REMOTE LOCK OR UNLOCK INOPERATIVE

Note. If power door lock system does not operate manually, see POWER DOOR LOCKS & TRUNK RELEASE article.

Operate power door locks manually. If no problem is found, replace transmitter. See TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING .

HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS DO NOT FLASH WHEN PRESSING LOCK BUTTON ON TRANSMITTER

Perform HAZARD REMINDER CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS . Ensure horn chirp is activated. Perform DOOR SWITCH INPUT SIGNAL CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If no problem is found, replace transmitter. See TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING .

INTERIOR LIGHT DOES NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN PRESSING UNLOCK BUTTON ON TRANSMITTER

Perform INTERIOR LIGHT CHECK , KEY SWITCH CHECK , DOOR SWITCH INPUT SIGNAL CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If no problem is found, replace transmitter. See TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING .

PANIC ALARM (HORN & HEADLIGHTS) INOPERATIVE WHEN USING PANIC ALARM BUTTON

Perform PRELIMINARY CHECK. See TROUBLE SHOOTING in ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article. Perform KEY SWITCH CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If no problem is found, replace transmitter. See TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING .

COMPONENT TESTS

Note. Individual component tests are not available from manufacturer at time of publication. Test circuit related to component in question. See SYSTEM TESTS and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS .

TRANSMITTER BATTERY CHECK

Remove transmitter battery. Using DVOM, measure voltage across battery positive and negative surfaces. Positive surface is stamped (+). Replace battery if voltage is not 2.5-3.0 volts.

POWER SUPPLY & GROUND CIRCUIT CHECK

  1. Check Power Circuit Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 10 (Green/Red wire) and No. 11 (White/Red wire) at Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. (Scheme 1) See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000). Battery voltage should be present with ignition switch in any position. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check condition of fusible link "F" (40-amp) and/or fuse No. 24 (7.5-amp). Replace if necessary. Also, ensure circuit breaker (located under left side of instrument panel, near fuse box) has not tripped. If fusible link and circuit breaker are okay, repair open in Green/Red wire and/or White/Red wire between circuit breaker and SECU harness connector.
  2. Check Accessory Power Circuit Turn ignition switch to ACC position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 21 (Green/White wire) at SECU harness connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check condition of fuse No. 10 (10-amp), located in instrument panel fuse block. Replace if necessary. If fuse is okay, repair open in Green/White wire between fuse box and SECU harness connector.
  3. Check Ground Circuit Turn ignition off. Disconnect SECU harness connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between SECU terminal No. 16 (Black wire) and ground. If continuity is present, power and ground circuits are okay. If continuity is not present, check chassis ground point above left-side kick panel. If ground connection is okay, repair open in Black wire.

DOOR SWITCH INPUT SIGNAL CHECK

  1. Preliminary Check Turn ignition off and remove key. Close glass hatch, engine hood and all doors. SECURITY indicator light should be off. Open any door. SECURITY indicator light should flash in one-second intervals. If operation is as specified, door switch is okay. If operation is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Check Door Switch Input Signal Ensure ignition is off. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminals No. 29 (Green/Red wire), No. 28 (Red/Blue wire) and No. 40 (Yellow wire) at Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. (Scheme 1) See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000). Ensure voltage is as specified. See «DOOR SWITCH CIRCUIT VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5366-S02061194072000081400000) table. If voltage is as specified, door switch is okay. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.   3. Check Door Switch Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect door switch harness connectors. Using DVOM, check for continuity between door switch terminals under specified conditions. See «DOOR SWITCH CONTINUITY SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5366-S24424721882000081400000) table. If continuity is not as specified, replace faulty door switch. If continuity is as specified, check for open or short in door switch harnesses. Check for poor door switch ground. Repair as necessary.

DOOR SWITCH CONTINUITY SPECIFICATIONS (1)

KEY SWITCH CHECK

  1. Check Key Switch Input Signal Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 32 (White/Red wire) at Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000) . DVOM should indicate battery voltage with key inserted in ignition switch, and zero volts with key removed. If voltage is as specified, key switch is okay. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Check Key Switch Disconnect key switch harness connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between key switch terminals. DVOM should indicate continuity with key inserted in ignition switch, and no continuity with key removed. Replace key switch if continuity is not as specified. If continuity is as specified, check fuse No. 24 (7.5-amp), located in fuse block. Check for open or short in wiring harness between key switch and fuse, or between key switch and SECU. Repair as necessary.

DRIVER'S DOOR LOCK SWITCH CHECK

  1. Check Door Lock Switch Input Signal Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) connector. Using DVOM, check continuity between ground and terminals No. 23 (Black/Red wire) and No. 35 (Light Green/Red wire). Continuity should exist only in lock and unlock position. If continuity is okay, door lock switch is okay. If continuity is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Check Door Lock Switch Disconnect power window main switch 16-pin connector. Check continuity between switch terminals No. 3, 7 and 14. (Scheme 2) Continuity should exist between switch terminals No. 3, 7 and 14 in lock position. Continuity should exist between switch terminals No. 3 and 7 in unlock position. If continuity is not as specified, replace power window main switch. If continuity is as specified, inspect ground circuit. Inspect circuits between SECU and power window main switch for open or short. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000). Repair as needed.

DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR CHECK

  1. Check Door Unlock Sensor Input Signal Turn ignition off. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminals No. 36 (Yellow/Green wire), No. 37 (Yellow/Blue wire) or No. 26 (Yellow/Red wire) at Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. (Scheme 1) See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000). Ensure voltage is as specified. See «DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5366-S32010800492000081400000) table. If voltage is as specified, door unlock sensor is okay. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS (1) Application & Condition Specification LF Door Terminal No. 36 Locked 5 Volts Unlocked Zero Volts RF Door Terminal No. 37 Locked 5 Volts Unlocked Zero Volts All Other Doors Terminal No. 26 Locked 5 Volts Unlocked Zero Volts (1) For terminal identification, see «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000).
  2. Check Door Unlock Sensor Disconnect door unlock sensor harness connectors. Using DVOM, check for continuity between door unlock sensor terminals. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000). Continuity should be present only when sensor is in unlocked position. If continuity is not as specified, replace door unlock sensor. If continuity is as specified, check for open or short in circuit between appropriate door unlock sensor and SECU. Check door unlock sensor ground circuit. Repair as necessary.

HAZARD REMINDER CHECK

  1. Check Hazard Warning Lights Using hazard switch, ensure hazard warning lights flash. If hazard warning lights flash, go to next step. If hazard warning lights do not flash, check hazard warning light circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in EXTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  2. Check Hazard Reminder Operation Turn ignition off. Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. Using a fused jumper wire, connect terminal No. 7 (Pink wire) at SECU harness connector to ground. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000) . If hazard warning lights illuminate, hazard reminder is okay. If hazard warning lights do not illuminate, go to next step.
  3. Check Multi-Remote Control Relay Check multi-remote control relay. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000) . Replace if necessary. If relay is okay, go to next step.
  4. Check Multi-Remote Control Relay Power Supply Disconnect multi-remote control relay. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (Orange wire) at multi-remote control relay connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000) . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check fuse No. 20 (15-amp), located in fuse block. Check for open or short in wiring harness between multi-remote control relay and fuse. Repair as necessary.
  5. Check Multi-Remote Control Relay Circuit Using DVOM, measure voltage between terminals No. 3 (Orange wire) and No. 5 (Gray/Red wire) at multi-remote control relay connector. Battery voltage should be present. Measure voltage between terminals No. 6 (Orange wire) and No. 7 (Gray/Blue wire) at multi-remote control relay connector. Battery voltage should be present. If voltage is as specified, check for open or short in wiring harness between multi-remote control relay and SECU. If voltage is not as specified, check for open or short in wiring harness between multi-remote control relay and fuse, or between multi-remote control relay and turn signal lights. Repair as necessary.

HORN REMINDER CHECK

  1. Inspect Horn Operation Operate horn. If horn does function correctly, repair as needed. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  2. Check Anti-Theft Warning Horn Alarm Operation Turn ignition off. Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. Using a fused jumper wire, apply ground to terminal No. 4 (Yellow/Green wire) at SECU harness connector. (Scheme 1) See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000). If horn sounds, horn alarm is okay. If horn does not sound, go to next step.

INTERIOR LIGHT CHECK

  1. Check Interior Light Ensure interior light switch is in DOOR position. Open any door. If interior light illuminates, go to next step. If interior light does not illuminate, check interior light circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  2. Check Interior Light Circuit Turn ignition off. Ensure interior light switch is in DOOR position. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 8 (Red/Black wire) at Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000) . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open or short in wiring harness between interior light and SECU.
  3. Check SECU Output Ensure ignition is off. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 8 (Red/Black wire) at SECU harness connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-5366-S39236995662000081400000) . Press and hold UNLOCK button on remote transmitter for 30 seconds. DVOM should indicate zero volts. Release button. DVOM should indicate battery voltage. If voltage is as specified, recheck system. If voltage is not as specified, replace SECU.
