Starting System: Other Nissan Maxima A33

A/T MODEL

Power is supplied at all times through 40-Amp fusible link (letter "C", located in the fuse and fusible link box), to ignition switch terminal No. 1.

With the ignition switch in the "ON" or "START" position, power is supplied through 15-Amp fuse [No. 20, located in the fuse block (J/B)] to park/neutral position relay terminal No. 1.

With the ignition switch in the "START" position, power is supplied from ignition switch terminal No. 5 to park/neutral position relay terminal No. 6, for 2002 models, and terminal No. 5, for 2003 models.

Ground is supplied, with the selector lever in the "P" or "N" position to park/neutral position relay terminal No. 2 through park/neutral position switch.

The park/neutral position relay is energized and power is supplied from ignition switch terminal No. 5 through park/neutral position relay terminals No. 6 and No. 7, on 2002 models, or terminals No. 3 and 5, on 2003 models, to starter motor windings terminal No. 2.

The starter motor plunger closes and provides a closed circuit between the battery and the starter motor. The starter motor is grounded to the cylinder block. With power and ground supplied, the starter motor operates.

M/T MODEL

Power is supplied at all times through 40-Amp fusible link (letter "C", located in the fuse and fusible link box), to ignition switch terminal No. 1.

With the ignition switch in the "START" position, power is supplied from ignition switch terminal No. 5 to clutch interlock relay terminal No. 5.

For 2002 models, with the ignition switch in the "ON" or "START" position, power is supplied through 10-Amp fuse [No. 21, located in fuse block (J/B)] to clutch interlock relay terminal No. 1.

For 2003 models, with the ignition switch in the "ON" or "START" position, power is supplied through 15-Amp fuse [No. 20, located in fuse block (J/B)] to clutch interlock relay terminal No. 1.

On all models, when the clutch pedal is depressed, ground is supplied to clutch interlock relay terminal No. 2 through the clutch interlock switch and body grounds E11, E22 and E53.

The clutch interlock relay is energized and power is supplied from terminal No. 3 of clutch interlock relay to terminal No. 2 of the starter motor windings.

The starter motor plunger closes and provides a closed circuit between the battery and the starter motor. The starter motor is grounded to the cylinder block. With power and ground supplied, the starter motor operates.

PINION/CLUTCH CHECK

  1. Inspect pinion assembly teeth. Replace pinion assembly if teeth are worn or damaged. Also check condition of ring gear teeth.
  2. Inspect planetary gears/planetary gear teeth. Replace planetary gears/planet gears if teeth are worn or damaged. Also check condition of pinion shaft/drive shaft gear teeth.
  3. Check to see if pinion assembly locks in one direction and rotates smoothly in the opposite direction. If it locks or rotates in both directions, or if unusual resistance is evident, replace.

BRUSHES & SPRINGS

Check brush spring tension, contact surface condition and brush length. Check lead clip and wire connections. Check condition of brush holders. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS .

COMMUTATOR

Replace armature if commutator diameter is less than specified. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS .
