WARNINGNever remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious burns could occur from high pressure engine coolant escaping from the radiator. Wrap a thick cloth around the cap. Slowly turn it a quarter of a turn to release built-up pressure. Carefully remove radiator cap by turning it all the way.
CAUTIONWhen removing water pump assembly, be careful not to get coolant on drive belt. Water pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as a unit. After installing water pump, connect hose and clamp securely, then check for leaks using radiator cap tester. Perform when the engine is cold.
  1. Drain engine coolant from the radiator. Refer to " «CHANGING ENGINE COOLANT»(ref-592018-S06646162382014010800000) ".
  2. Remove front air duct. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-592016-S14803150462014010800000) ".
  3. Remove RH wheel and tire assembly. Refer to " «ADJUSTMENT»(ref-592020-S33110986762014010800000) ".
  4. Remove generator and generator bracket. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-592027-S14904319922014010800000) ".
  5. Remove the water pump and water pump gasket.
CAUTIONHandle the water pump vane so that it does not contact any other parts. Water pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as an assembly.

Note. If it is necessary to remove the water pipe, the exhaust manifold and three way catalyst assembly must be removed. Refer to " REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ".

Scheme 67

Scheme 67: INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
  1. Visually check that there is no significant dirt or rusting on the water pump body and vane.
  2. Check that there is no looseness in the vane shaft, and that it turns smoothly when rotated by hand.
  3. If the water pump does not perform properly, replace the water pump assembly.

Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

  1. When inserting water pipe end to cylinder block, apply a mild soap to O-ring. Then insert it immediately. CAUTION: Do not reuse O-ring.
  1. Drain engine coolant from the radiator. Refer to " «CHANGING ENGINE COOLANT»(ref-592018-S06646162382014010800000) ".
  2. Remove the front air duct. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-592016-S14803150462014010800000) ".
  3. Remove engine under cover. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-592019-S16772029082014010800000) ".
  4. Remove radiator hose (lower) from the engine coolant inlet side.
  5. Remove engine coolant inlet, thermostat and O-ring. CAUTION: Do not reuse O-ring.

  1. Place a thread so that it is caught in the valves of the thermostat. Immerse fully in a container filled with water. Heat while stirring.
  2. The valve opening temperature is the temperature at which the valve opens and the falls from the thread.
  3. Continue heating. Check the full-open lift amount. NOTE: The full-open lift amount standard temperature for the thermostat is the reference value.
  4. After checking the full-open lift amount, lower the water temperature and check the valve closing temperature. Thermostat Standard Values Valve opening temperature Refer to " «THERMOSTAT»(ref-592018-S25405765552014010800000) " Full-open lift amount Refer to " «THERMOSTAT»(ref-592018-S25405765552014010800000) " Valve closing temperature Refer to " «THERMOSTAT»(ref-592018-S25405765552014010800000) "
  5. If valve setting at measured values are out of standard range, replace thermostat.

Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
