TRANSMITTER

  1. Enter vehicle and sit in driver's seat. Close and lock all doors. Insert and remove key from ignition switch more than 6 times within 10 seconds. If successful, hazard warning lights will flash.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ACC position. Press any button on new transmitter once. Hazard warning lights should flash if input is successful. New transmitter identification code is now entered into SECU memory and old transmitter code is erased.
  3. To program an additional transmitter, lock and unlock doors using driver's side door lock switch. Press any button on second transmitter. New transmitter identification code is now entered into SECU memory.
  4. Unlock and open driver's side door. Programming is complete. Check transmitter operation.

ALL REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS INOPERATIVE

  1. Check transmitter battery. See «TRANSMITTER BATTERY CHECK»(ref-8833-S31807716252000092600000) under SYSTEM TESTS. Replace if necessary. If battery is okay, go to next step.
  2. Enter identification code of an additional or new transmitter. See «TRANSMITTER»(ref-8833-S34103519602000110600000) under PROGRAMMING. If identification code can be entered, replace with originally used transmitter. If identification code cannot be entered, see «ALL TRANSMITTERS INOPERATIVE»(ref-8833-S17860017772000092600000) under SYSTEM TESTS.

REMOTE LOCK OR UNLOCK INOPERATIVE

  1. If doors do not lock or unlock using transmitter, check system operation using key. If doors lock and unlock, go to next step. If doors do not lock and unlock, see POWER DOOR LOCKS & TRUNK RELEASE - ALTIMA article.
  2. Enter identification code of an additional or new transmitter. See «TRANSMITTER»(ref-8833-S34103519602000110600000) under PROGRAMMING. If doors lock and unlock using transmitter, replace transmitter. If doors do not lock and unlock, recheck transmitter operation. Replace Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) if necessary.

HORN CHIRP DOES NOT ACTIVATE WHEN PRESSING LOCK BUTTON OF REMOTE CONTROLLER (WITH HORN CHIRP MODE)

Check if horn sounds with horn switch. If horn is audible, see HORN CHIRP INOPERATIVE . If horn is not audible, see horn circuit wiring diagram in STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.

HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS DO NOT FLASH WHEN PRESSING LOCK BUTTON ON TRANSMITTER

Check if hazard warning lights flash when using hazard switch. If operation is okay, see HAZARD WARNING LIGHT FUNCTION INOPERATIVE under SYSTEM TESTS. If operation is not okay, check hazard warning light circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in EXTERIOR LIGHTS article.

INTERIOR LIGHT DOES NOT ILLUMINATE FOR 30 SECONDS WHEN PRESSING UNLOCK BUTTON ON TRANSMITTER

Ensure interior light switch is in DOOR position. Open any door. If interior light illuminates, see INTERIOR LIGHT FUNCTION INOPERATIVE under SYSTEM TESTS. If interior light does not illuminate, check interior light circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article.

PANIC ALARM (HORN & HEADLIGHTS) INOPERATIVE WHEN USING PANIC ALARM BUTTON

  1. Check if horn and headlights operate when the following is performed: open driver's window. Close engine hood, trunk lid and all doors. Lock doors using key. Wait for 30 seconds and ensure SECURITY indicator light begins to flash. Open engine hood with engine hood lock opener. Panic alarm should activate (horn sounds and headlights flash). Alarm will stop once door is unlocked using key. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, check anti-theft system. See ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS - ALTIMA article.
  2. Enter identification code of an additional or new transmitter. See «TRANSMITTER»(ref-8833-S34103519602000110600000) under PROGRAMMING. If doors lock and unlock using transmitter, replace transmitter. If doors do not lock and unlock, recheck transmitter operation. Replace Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) if necessary.

TRUNK LID DOES NOT OPEN WHEN TRUNK OPENER BUTTON IS PRESSED

  1. Check if trunk lid opens with trunk lid opener switch. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, See «TRUNK LID OPENER INOPERATIVE»(ref-8833-S17204475062000092600000) .
  2. Enter identification code of an additional or new transmitter. See «TRANSMITTER»(ref-8833-S34103519602000110600000) under PROGRAMMING. If doors lock and unlock using the new transmitter, replace transmitter. If doors do not lock and unlock, recheck transmitter operation. Replace Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) if necessary.

TRANSMITTER BATTERY CHECK

Remove transmitter battery. Using DVOM, measure voltage across battery positive and negative surfaces. Positive surface is stamped (+). Replace battery if voltage is not 2.5-3.0 volts.

ALL TRANSMITTERS INOPERATIVE

  1. Check SECU Power Supply Circuit Turn ignition off. Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (White/Blue wire) (with anti-theft warning system) or terminal No. 6 (without anti-theft warning system) at SECU harness connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check fusible link "D" (40-amp), located in fuse and fusible link box. Check circuit breaker. Check for open or short in wiring harness between fuse and SECU. Repair as necessary.
  2. Check SECU Ground Circuit Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 10 (Black wire) (with anti-theft warning system) or terminal No. 1 (without anti-theft warning system) at SECU harness connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, check ground harness. Repair as necessary.
  3. Check Door Switch Circuit Reconnect SECU harness connector. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and specified terminals at SECU harness connector. See «DOOR SWITCH CIRCUIT TEST»(ref-8833-S20023090292000092600000) table. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check door switch. See «DOOR SWITCH»(ref-8833-S12385162552000092600000) under COMPONENT TESTS. Check door switch ground condition. Check for open or short in wiring harness between door switch and SECU. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . Repair as necessary.   4. Check Lock/Unlock Switch Input Signal Disconnect SECU harness connector. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and specified terminals at SECU harness connector. See «LOCK/UNLOCK INPUT SIGNAL TEST»(ref-8833-S00658496842000092600000) table. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check door unlock sensor. See «DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR»(ref-8833-S06220935322000092600000) under COMPONENT TESTS. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . Repair as necessary.   5. Check Door Lock/Unlock Switch Using DVOM, check for continuity between specified terminals at SECU harness connector. See «DOOR LOCK/UNLOCK SWITCH TEST»(ref-8833-S10813029382000092600000) . Check door lock/unlock switch ground circuit. Check for open or short in wiring harness between door lock/unlock switch and SECU. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . Repair as necessary. DOOR LOCK/UNLOCK SWITCH TEST (1) Check Continuity Between Terminals No. Condition Continuity 10 & 15 Lock Yes 10 & 11 Unlock Yes 10 & 15; 10 & 11 Neutral No (1) For terminal identification, see «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) .
  6. Check Ignition Switch ACC Or ON Circuit Disconnect SECU harness connector. Using DVOM, measure voltage of Blue/Red wire between ground and terminal No. 17 (with anti-theft system) or terminal No. 19 (without anti-theft system) at SECU harness connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . DVOM should indicate battery voltage with ignition switch in ACC or ON positions. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check fuse No. 10 (10-amp), located in fuse block. Check for open or short in wiring harness between SECU and fuse. Repair as necessary.
  7. Check Key Switch Input Signal Turn ignition off. Reconnect SECU harness connector. Using DVOM, measure voltage of Blue wire between ground and terminal No. 24 (with anti-theft system) or terminal No. 12 (without anti-theft system) at SECU harness connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . DVOM should indicate battery voltage with key inserted in ignition switch, and zero volts with key removed. If voltage is as specified, check operation of mechanical parts in door lock system. If voltage is not as specified, check fuse No. 24 (10-amp), located in fuse block. Check key switch. See «KEY SWITCH»(ref-8833-S39345696542000092600000) under COMPONENT TESTS. Check for open or short in wiring harness between key switch and fuse, or between key switch and SECU. Repair as necessary.

INTERIOR LIGHT FUNCTION INOPERATIVE

  1. Check Interior Light Circuit Turn ignition off. Place interior light switch in DOOR position. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) of Red/White wire between ground and terminal No. 9 (with anti-theft system) or terminal No. 5 (without anti-theft system) at Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . If battery voltage is present, leave DVOM connected and go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair wiring harness between interior light and SECU.
  2. While observing DVOM, press unlock button on remote transmitter. DVOM should indicate zero volts. DVOM should indicate battery voltage with unlock button released. If voltage is as specified, recheck system. If voltage is not as specified, check for open or short in wiring harness between interior light and SECU. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . Repair as necessary.

HAZARD WARNING LIGHT FUNCTION INOPERATIVE

  1. Check Hazard Indicator Operation Turn ignition off. Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. Using a fused jumper wire, connect Orange wire of terminal No. 7 (with anti-theft system) or terminal No. 14 (without anti-theft system) at SECU harness connector to ground. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . If hazard warning lights illuminate, replace SECU. If hazard warning lights do not illuminate, check multi-remote control relay. Replace if necessary. If relay is okay, go to next step.
  2. Check Multi-Remote Control Relay Power Supply Disconnect multi-remote control relay. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (Green/Orange wire) at multi-remote control relay connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check fuse No. 20 (10-amp), located in fuse block. Check for open or short in wiring harness between multi-remote control relay and fuse. Repair as necessary.
  3. Check Multi-Remote Control Relay Circuit Using DVOM, measure voltage between terminals No. 3 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 5 (Green/Black wire) at multi-remote control relay connector. Battery voltage should be present. Measure voltage between terminals No. 6 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 7 (Green/Yellow wire) at multi-remote control relay connector. Battery voltage should be present. If voltage is as specified, recheck system. If battery voltage is not as specified, check wiring harness for open or short.

HORN CHIRP INOPERATIVE

  1. Check Horn Chirp Operation Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. Using a jumper wire, connect Sky Blue wire of terminal No. 8 (with anti-theft system) or terminal No. 9 (without anti-theft system) at SECU harness connector to ground. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8833-S26539955912000092600000) . Horn should chirp. If horn does not chirp got to next step.
  2. Check Power Supply For Theft Warning Horn Relay Disconnect theft warning horn relay from relay connector. Using DVOM check voltage between terminal No. 1 and ground. Battery voltage should be present. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check fuse No. 41 (10-amp), located in fuse and fusible link box. Check for open or short in wiring harness between theft warning horn relay and fuse. Repair as necessary.
  3. Check Theft Warning Horn Relay Circuit Using DVOM, measure voltage between terminals No. 3 (Green/Red wire) and No. 5 (Green/White wire) at theft warning horn relay connector. Battery voltage should be present. Measure voltage between terminals No. 6 (Green/Yellow wire) and No. 7 (Black wire) at theft warning horn relay connector. Battery voltage should be present. If voltage is as specified, recheck system. If battery voltage is not as specified, check wiring harness for open or short.

TRUNK LID OPENER INOPERATIVE

  1. Check Trunk Lid Opener Actuator Disconnect trunk lid opener actuator connector. Using 2 jumper wires, a fused jumper wire, and a 12-volt battery, connect fused jumper wire to terminal No. 3 and one jumper wire to positive side of battery. Connect second jumper wire to terminal No. 1 and negative side of battery. Trunk lid should open. If trunk lid does not open replace trunk lid opener actuator. If trunk lid opened check fuse No. 41 (10-amp), located in fuse block. Check wiring harness for open or short between fuse and trunk lid opener actuator, and between trunk lid opener actuator and Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU).

DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR

Disconnect door lock actuator in question. Using DVOM, check for continuity between terminals No. 2 and 4 of door lock actuator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Ensure continuity is present only when door is unlocked. Replace door lock actuator if continuity is not as specified.

DOOR SWITCH

Disconnect door switch in question. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 1 of door switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Ensure continuity is present only when door switch plunger is released. Replace door switch if continuity is not as specified.

KEY SWITCH

Disconnect key switch harness connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between key switch terminals. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Ensure continuity is present only when key is inserted in ignition switch. Replace key switch if continuity is not as specified.
