M/T MODEL
Power is supplied at all times through 40A fusible link (letter M, located in the fuse and fusible link block) to ignition switch terminal No. 1.
With the ignition switch in the "ON" or "START" position, power is supplied through 10A fuse (No. 80, located in the IPDM E/R) and through 10A fuse (No. 71, located in the IPDM E/R) and to clutch interlock switch terminal No. 1.
When the clutch pedal is depressed, power is supplied through clutch interlock switch terminal No. 2 to IPDM E/R terminal No. 43. Ground is supplied to IPDM E/ R terminals No. 14, 45 and 46 through body grounds E17, E43 and F152. Then starter relay is turned ON.
With the ignition switch in the "START" position, IPDM E/R is energized and power is supplied from ignition switch terminal No. 4 through IPDM E/R terminal No. 4 to starter motor terminal No. 1.
The starter motor plunger closes and provides a closed circuit between the battery and starter motor. The starter motor is grounded to the engine block. With power and ground supplied, cranking occurs and the engine starts.
A/T MODEL
Power is supplied at all times through 40A fusible link (letter M, located in the fuse and fusible link block) to ignition switch terminal No. 1.
With the ignition switch in the "ON" or "START" position, power is supplied to 10A fuse (No. 80, located in the IPDM E/R).
When the selector lever in the "P" or "N" position, power is supplied from A/T assembly (TCM) terminal No. 9 to IPDM E/R terminal No. 43. Ground is supplied to IPDM E/R terminals No. 14, 45 and 46 through body grounds E17, E43 and F152. Then starter relay is turned ON.
With the ignition switch in the "START" position, IPDM E/R is energized and power is supplied from ignition switch terminal No. 4 through IPDM E/R terminal No. 4 to starter motor terminal No. 1.
The starter motor plunger closes and provides a closed circuit between the battery and starter motor. The starter motor is grounded to the engine block. With power and ground supplied, cranking occurs and the engine starts.
WORK FLOW

PINION/CLUTCH CHECK
- Inspect pinion assembly teeth. Replace pinion assembly if teeth are worn or damaged. Also check condition of reduction gear teeth. see scheme 5
- Inspect reduction gear teeth. Replace reduction gear if teeth are worn or damaged. Also check condition of armature shaft gear teeth.
- Check to see if pinion assembly locks in one direction and rotates smoothly in the opposite direction. If it locks or rotates in both directions, or if unusual resistance is evident, replace.
BRUSHES & SPRINGS
Check brush spring tension, contact surface condition and brush length. Check lead clip and wire connections. Check condition of brush holders. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS .
