The air injection system is a pulse action design. Primary components of the system are the secondary air control valve, secondary air control solenoid valve and a reed valve. All truck and Colt (1.5L) models use an additional reed valve downstream of the front catalytic converter. The reed valve is used as a one way check valve.
Based on sensor information, the ECU will energize the secondary air control solenoid valve. When energized, the solenoid valve opens to allow manifold vacuum application to the secondary air control valve. When vacuum is applied to control valve diaphragm, secondary air circuit is open and air injection system is activated. (Схема №2)
The air injection system is used to direct secondary air into the exhaust system near the catalytic converter. As a result, unburned gases will further oxidize and with assistance from the catalytic converter, promote neutralization of exhaust emissions.
SINGLE REED VALVE
The reed valve is actuated by exhaust vacuum being generated from pulsation in the exhaust manifold. Extra air is supplied into the exhaust manifold through secondary air control valve. The secondary air control valve is opened by intake manifold pressure when the solenoid valve is energized by the ECU based on the information on coolant temperature, engine speed and idle position.
DUAL REED VALVE SYSTEM
Reed valves are actuated by exhaust vacuum being generated from pulsation in the exhaust system. Extra air is drawn through the air cleaner and supplied into the exhaust system by valve motion corresponding to exhaust vacuum. Two identical reed valves are used to supply secondary air into 2 ports in the exhaust system. One port is at the exhaust manifold. The other port is between the 2 catalytic converters.
Reed valve supplying air to exhaust manifold is activated by pulsation in the exhaust manifold, and reed valve supplying air to catalytic converters is activated by pulsation in exhaust system between front and rear catalytic converters.
SINGLE REED VALVE SYSTEM
- Inspect air lines, filter element and reed valves for cracks, leaks, clogging or damage. Replace or repair as necessary.
- Disconnect air hose at inlet side of reed valve. If suction is felt at inlet side, reed valve is good. Exhaust emissions should not be blown from inlet side of valve. Replace valve if defective.
- Disconnect air hose at air cleaner. Start engine and warm to operating temperature. Accelerate engine to 4000 RPM and as engine is decelerating, feel for suction at air hose.
- If suction is confirmed, system is functioning correctly. If system does not perform as specified, attach jumper wire (or test light) between Red/White wire of air control solenoid valve and ground. An audible signal should be heard (or felt) and suction felt at the hose.
- If suction is felt, fault is in the ECU. If suction is not felt, inspect Black/White wire at solenoid to verify voltage. Repair circuit if necessary and repeat step 1).
- If voltage is available, attach vacuum pump to secondary air control valve. With 18 in. Hg vacuum applied, suction should be felt at the air supply hose. If suction is confirmed, replace secondary air control solenoid valve. If not, replace secondary air control valve.
