When Engine Is Stopped

When ignition switch is switch to ON position, electricity flows from L-terminal of generator to rotor coil (field coil) and at the same time charging warning illuminates.

When Engine Is Being Started Or Has Started

When engine is started, charging voltage is applied to L-terminal of the generator, with result that the charging warning light is extinguished.

In addition, because battery voltage is applied to S-terminal of the generator, this battery voltage is monitored at the IC voltage regulator, thus switching ON and OFF current to rotor coil (field coil) and thereby controlling the output voltage of the generator.

Power is supplied to each load from B-terminal of the generator.

Note. The generator relay functions as a back-up for the flow of electricity to the rotor coil (field coil) if there is a disconnection or damaged wiring of the charging warning light.

Diamante

  1. Apply the negative test probe of the diode tester or a multimeter with a diode test feature to the positive headsink and the positive probe alternatively to "A", "B", and "C", a low resistance reading, or the forward voltage drop across the diode should be obtained. Reverse the test probes, a high resistance reading or a higher reverse voltage should be obtained. (Scheme 20)
  2. Connect the positive test probe to the negative headsink and the negative test probe alternatively to "D", "E" and "F", a low resistance of forward voltage drop across the diode should be obtained. Reverse the test probes, a high resistance reading or a higher reverse voltage should be obtained. (Scheme 20)

  1. Check continuity across rotor slip rings. (Scheme 21) Resistance should be 3-5 ohms (2-5 ohms on Eclipse, Galant, Lancer, Montero and Montero Sport). Replace rotor if continuity is not present or resistance is not within specification.
  2. Check continuity between individual slip rings and rotor shaft. (Scheme 22) If continuity is present, rotor coil or slip ring is grounded. Replace rotor.

  1. Check continuity between coil lead. (Scheme 23) If there is no continuity, replace stator.
  2. Check continuity between coil and core. (Scheme 24) If there is continuity, replace stator.

  1. Replace brushes if worn to limit. Limit is.15" (3.8 mm) on Diamante and.08" (2 mm) on all other models. (Scheme 25)
  2. Brush can be removed by unsoldering brush lead wire.
  3. When installing a new brush, push brush in to brush holder and solder lead wire. (Scheme 26)
