INTRODUCTION

If no faults were found while performing BASIC TESTING , proceed with self-diagnostics. If no fault codes or only pass codes are present after entering self-diagnostics, proceed to TESTS W/O CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.).

SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS

System diagnosis can only be accomplished using a voltmeter or appropriate scan tester. See ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS. Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors several different engine control system circuits. If an abnormal input signal occurs, a fault code is stored in ECU memory and given a fault code number. Each circuit has its own fault number and message. A specific fault code indicates a particular system failure, but it does not indicate that cause of failure is necessarily within system.

A fault code does not condemn any specific component; it simply points out a probable malfunctioning area. If a fault code is set, ECU will turn on CHECK ENGINE light. Fault codes can be confirmed by using a voltmeter. System malfunctions encountered are identified as either hard failures or intermittent failures as determined by ECU.

Hard Failures

Hard failures cause CHECK ENGINE light to illuminate and remain on until malfunction is repaired. If light comes on and remains on (light may flash) during vehicle operation, cause of malfunction must be determined by using FAULT CODES table. If a sensor fails, ECU will use a substitute value in its calculations to continue engine operation. In this condition, vehicle is functional, but loss of good driveability may result.

Intermittent Failures

Intermittent failures may cause CHECK ENGINE light to flicker or illuminate and go out after intermittent fault goes away. However, corresponding trouble code will be retained in ECU memory. If related fault does not reoccur within a certain time frame, related trouble code will be erased from ECU memory. Intermittent failures may be caused by a sensor, connector or wiring problems. See INTERMITTENTS in TESTS W/O CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.

PRETEST INSPECTION

Before proceeding with diagnosis, following precautions must be observed

  1. Ensure vehicle has a fully charged battery and functional charging system.
  2. Visually inspect connectors and circuit wiring being worked on.
  3. DO NOT disconnect battery or ECU. This will erase any fault codes stored in ECU.
  4. DO NOT cause short circuits when performing electrical tests. This will set additional fault codes, making diagnosis of original problem more difficult.
  5. DO NOT use a test light in place of a voltmeter.
  6. When checking for spark, ensure coil wire is NOT more than 1/4" from ground. If coil wire is more than 1/4" from ground, damage to vehicle electronics and/or ECU may result.
  7. DO NOT prolong testing of fuel injectors. Engine may hydrostatically (liquid) lock.
  8. When a vehicle has multiple fault codes, always repair lowest number fault code first.

Using Scan Tester

  1. Before entering on-board diagnostics, refer to «PRETEST INSPECTION»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__pretest-inspection) . Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Locate self-diagnostic connector, next to fuse block. Connect power source terminal of scan tester to cigarette lighter socket.
  2. Connect scan tester to self-diagnostic connector. Turn ignition on. Read and record scan tester self-diagnosis output. Perform necessary repair. See «FAULT CODES»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__fault-codes) .

Using Voltmeter

  1. Before entering on-board diagnostics, refer to «PRETEST INSPECTION»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__pretest-inspection). Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Locate self-diagnostic connector, next to fuse block. Connect voltmeter positive lead to self-diagnostic connector terminal No. 1 and negative lead to terminal No. 12 (ground). (Scheme 26)
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position, and disclosure of ECU memory will begin. If 2 or more systems are non-functional, they are indicated by order of increasing code number. Indication is made by 12-volt pulses of voltmeter pointer. A constant repetition of short 12-volt pulses indicates system is normal. If system is abnormal, voltmeter will pulse between zero and 12 volts.
  3. Signals will appear on voltmeter as long and short 12-volt pulses. Long pulses represent tens; short pulses represent ones. For example 4 long pulses and 3 short pulses indicate Code 43. After recording fault code(s), perform necessary repair to indicated circuit. FAULT CODES

CLEARING CODES

Note. To clear codes using a scan tester, refer to owners manual supplied with scan tester.

Fault codes may be cleared by disconnecting negative battery cable for at least 10 seconds, allowing ECU to clear fault codes. Reconnect negative battery cable and check for codes to confirm repair.

TEST NS-1A - READING FAULT CODES AND CHECKING FOR SPARK

Scheme 27: TEST NS-1A - READING FAULT CODES AND CHECKING FOR SPARK
  1. Ensure battery is fully charged. Attempt to crank engine for 10 seconds. If engine does not crank, repair cranking system. If engine cranks, connect DRB-II to engine diagnostic connector and read faults. If DRB-II message screen is blank or NO RESPONSE message is displayed, perform «TEST NS-7A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-7a-checking-drb-ii-communication).
  2. If DRB-II displayed Code 22, perform «TEST NS-4A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-4a-repairing-crank-angle). If DRB-II displayed Code 42, perform «TEST NS-5A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-5a-repairing-fuel-system). If DRB-II displayed Code 44, perform «TEST NS-6A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-6a-repairing-ignition-coil). If DRB-II displays Code 41, go to next step. If DRB-II does not display Code 22, 42, 44 or 41, go to step 5).
  3. Disconnect Multi-Point Injection (MPI) control relay harness connector. MPI control relay is located on right side of center console next to Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Measure voltage at MPI control relay harness connector terminal No. 10 (Black/Red wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/Red wire for an open circuit, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  4. Disconnect injector No. 1 harness connector. Measure resistance between MPI control relay harness connector terminal No. 5 (Red wire) and injector No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Black wire non-turbo) or (Black/Yellow wire turbo). If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace MPI control relay, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure). If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair Red wire between MPI control relay harness connector and injector splice, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  5. Disconnect No. 1 spark plug wire at spark plug. Insert an insulated screwdriver in spark plug wire end. Hold screwdriver 1/4" from ground. Crank engine and check for spark. If spark jumps to ground, go to next step. If spark does not jump to ground, go to step 7).
  6. Reconnect No. 1 spark plug wire. Disconnect No. 2 spark plug wire at spark plug. Insert an insulated screwdriver in spark plug wire end. Hold screwdriver 1/4" from ground. Crank engine and check for spark. If spark jumps to ground, perform «TEST NS-2A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-2a-checking-fuel-system). If spark does not jump to ground, go to next step.
  7. Measure resistance of spark plug wire. If resistance is less than 15,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 15,000 ohms, replace spark plug wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  8. Disconnect ignition coil connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on ignition coil female connector terminal No. 3 (Black/White wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/White wire between ignition coil connector and ignition splice, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  9. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ignition coil towers for cylinders No. 1 and 4. (Scheme 27) If resistance is between 10,000 and 14,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not between 10,000 and 14,000 ohms, replace ignition coil assembly, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  10. Measure resistance between ignition coil towers for cylinders No. 2 and 3. (Scheme 27) If resistance is between 10,000 and 14,000 ohms, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure). If resistance is not between 10,000 and 14,000 ohms, replace ignition coil assembly, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).

TEST NS-2A - CHECKING FUEL SYSTEM

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Turn ignition on. Remove fuel tank filler cap. Using DRB-II, actuate fuel pump. Listen for fuel pump operating sound at fuel tank filler pipe. If fuel pump is not operating, perform «TEST NS-3A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-3a-checking-fuel-pump) . High fuel pressure may be present in fuel lines. Open fuel system with caution. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE at beginning of article.
  2. If fuel pump is operating, turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump connector at fuel tank. Crank engine for 10 seconds. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Release fuel pressure. Connect fuel pressure gauge and adapter to fuel rail. Reconnect negative battery cable and fuel pump connector at fuel tank.
  3. Connect a jumper wire between battery positive terminal and single-wire fuel pump check connector Black/White wire, located near battery in engine compartment. Ensure no fuel leaks are present.
  4. Read fuel pressure gauge. If fuel pressure is not between 38-50 psi (2.7-3.5 kg/cm 2 ), go to next step. If fuel pressure is between 38-50 psi (2.7-3.5 kg/cm 2 ), disconnect jumper wire. Remove and inspect spark plugs. If spark plug tips are wet, clean and dry plugs. Install spark plugs, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If spark plug tips are dry, check engine for a mechanical failure (i.e., valve timing and engine compression), repair as necessary, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  5. If fuel pressure is less than 50 psi (3.5 kg/cm 2 ), go to next step. If fuel pressure is more than 50 psi (3.5 kg/cm 2 ), inspect for restricted fuel return line. Repair as necessary and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If fuel return line is not restricted, replace fuel pressure regulator, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . CAUTION: DO NOT allow fuel pressure to exceed 60 psi when squeezing fuel return hose.
  6. Squeeze fuel return hose. If fuel pressure is more than 38 psi (2.7 kg/cm 2 ) when fuel return hose is squeezed, replace fuel pressure regulator, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If fuel pressure is less than 38 psi (2.7 kg/cm 2 ) when fuel return hose is squeezed, remove jumper wire from fuel pump check connector. Stop squeezing fuel return hose. Inspect fuel supply line for a restriction.
  7. If a restriction exists in fuel supply line, repair as necessary, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If no restriction is present in fuel supply line, disconnect fuel pump electrical connector at fuel tank. Crank engine until fuel pressure gauge reads zero psi.
  8. Disconnect fuel filter. Inspect fuel filter for restriction. If fuel filter is restricted, replace fuel filter, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If fuel filter is not restricted, replace fuel pump, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .

TEST NS-3A - CHECKING FUEL PUMP

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. If vehicle is turbocharged, go to step 6). If vehicle is non-turbo, turn ignition off. Connect a jumper wire between battery positive terminal and single-wire fuel pump check connector Black/White wire located near battery in engine compartment. Listen for fuel pump operating sound at fuel filler pipe.
  2. If fuel pump operating sound cannot be heard, go to step 4). If fuel pump operating sound can be heard, remove jumper wire from fuel pump check connector. Disconnect Multi-Point Injection (MPI) control relay connector. MPI control relay is located on right side of center console next to Electronic Control Unit (ECU).
  3. Measure resistance between single-wire fuel pump check connector Black/White wire and MPI control relay harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Green wire). If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black/Green wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace MPI control relay, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  4. Disconnect fuel pump 2-pin connector at fuel tank. Measure voltage at fuel pump 2-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Black/White wire between fuel pump check connector and fuel pump 2-pin connector, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  5. If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Measure resistance between fuel pump 2-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair Black wire for an open circuit to ground, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace fuel pump, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  6. Turn ignition off. Connect a jumper wire between battery positive terminal and single-wire fuel pump check connector Black/White wire located near battery in engine compartment. Listen for fuel pump operating sound at fuel filler pipe.
  7. If fuel pump operating sound cannot be heard, go to step 9). If fuel pump operating sound can be heard, remove jumper wire from fuel pump check connector. Disconnect Multi-Point Injection (MPI) control relay connector. MPI control relay is located on right side of center console next to Electronic Control Unit (ECU).
  8. Remove jumper wire from fuel pump check connector. Disconnect Multi-Point Injection (MPI) control relay connector. MPI control relay is located on right side of center console next to Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Measure resistance between fuel pump connector terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire) and MPI control relay harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Green wire). If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black/Green wire or Black/White wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace MPI control relay, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  9. Disconnect fuel pump 4-pin connector at fuel tank. Using DRB-II, activate fuel pump. Measure voltage at fuel pump 4-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Black/White wire or Black/Green wire between fuel pump 4-pin connector and MPI control relay connector, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  10. If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Measure resistance between fuel pump 4-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair Black wire for an open circuit to ground, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace fuel pump, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .

TEST NS-4A - REPAIRING CRANK ANGLE SENSOR

  1. Disconnect crank angle/Top Dead Center (TDC) sensor 4-pin connector. Crank angle/TDC sensor is located on end of cylinder head. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at crank angle/TDC sensor 4-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Red wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 7).
  2. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between crank angle/TDC sensor 4-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit between crank angle/TDC sensor Black wire and ECU connector terminal No. 24. Perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  3. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on crank angle/TDC sensor 4-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire). If voltage is more than 4 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 4 volts, go to step 6).
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 24-pin connector. Measure resistance of Black wire between crank angle/TDC sensor 4-pin connector terminal No. 2 and ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 21. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black wire between crank angle/TDC sensor 4-pin connector and ECU 24-pin connector, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  5. Measure resistance between crank angle/TDC sensor 4-pin connector Black wire and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair Black wire for a short to ground, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure). If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  6. Reconnect crank angle/TDC sensor connector. Connect an analog voltmeter to ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 21 (Black wire). While watching voltmeter, crank engine.   7. Inspect MPI control relay main fusible link. Fusible link is located near vehicle battery. (Scheme 28) If fusible link is blown, go to next step. If fusible link is okay, repair Black/Red wire to MPI control relay for a short to ground. Replace fusible link, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  8. Using a voltmeter, backprobe MPI control relay connector terminal No. 5 (Red wire). Ensure DRB-II is actuating purge solenoid. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Red wire between crank angle/TDC sensor and MPI control relay, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  9. Using a voltmeter, backprobe MPI control relay connector terminal No. 10 (Black/Red wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/Red wire between fusible link and MPI control relay, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  10. Using a voltmeter, backprobe MPI control relay connector terminal No. 8 (Black/Blue wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace MPI control relay, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  11. Turn ignition off. Disconnect MPI control relay connector. Disconnect ECU 18-pin connector. Measure resistance of Black/Blue wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 63 and MPI control relay connector terminal No. 8. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black/Blue wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure). If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).

TEST NS-5A - REPAIRING FUEL SYSTEM

  1. Turn ignition on. Using DRB-II, actuate fuel pump. With MPI control relay connected, measure voltage on MPI control relay connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Green wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/Green wire between MPI control relay and ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 13, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  2. With MPI control relay connected, measure voltage on MPI control relay connector terminal No. 7 (White/Red wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 4).
  3. With MPI control relay connected, measure voltage on MPI control relay connector terminal No. 3 (Black/White wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace MPI control relay, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/White wire between MPI control relay connector and ignition switch splice, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 18-pin connector. Measure resistance of White/Red wire between MPI control relay connector terminal No. 7 and ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 56. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in White/Red wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .

TEST NS-6A - REPAIRING IGNITION COIL SYSTEM

  1. Disconnect ignition coil 3-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on ignition coil 3-pin female connector terminal No. 3 (Black/White wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/White wire between ignition coil female connector and ignition splice, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  2. Measure resistance between ignition coil towers No. 2 and 3. see scheme 4 If resistance is more than 1.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 1.5 ohms, disconnect power transistor 8-pin connector located under ignition coil assembly. Measure resistance of Yellow/Green wire between ignition coil 3-pin female connector terminal No. 2 and power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 8. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to step 5). If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow/Green wire between ignition coil 3-pin female connector and power transistor 8-pin connector, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  3. Remove ignition coil assembly from vehicle. Disconnect ignition coil pigtail. Measure resistance of White wire in ignition coil pigtail. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace ignition coil pigtail, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  4. Inspect ignition coil pigtail for obvious damage. If obvious damage is present, replace ignition coil pigtail, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure). If no obvious damage is present, replace ignition coil, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  5. Reconnect ignition coil 3-pin connector. Measure voltage on power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 8 (Yellow/Green wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair short to ground in Yellow/Green wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  6. Measure voltage on power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Black wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 10). If voltage is less than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition coil 3-pin connector. Measure resistance between ignition coil 3-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Black wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Yellow/Black wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  7. Measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire between ignition coil 3-pin female connector and power transistor 8-pin connector. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow/Black wire between ignition coil 3-pin female connector and power transistor 8-pin connector, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  8. Remove ignition coil assembly from vehicle. Disconnect ignition coil pigtail. Measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire in ignition coil pigtail. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ignition coil pigtail, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  9. Inspect ignition coil pigtail for obvious damage. If obvious damage is present, replace ignition coil pigtail, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure). If no obvious damage is present, replace ignition coil, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  10. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  11. Reconnect power transistor connector. Using an analog voltmeter, backprobe ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 54 (Yellow wire). Crank engine and observe voltmeter. If voltage is more than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, go to step 15).
  12. Using a voltmeter, backprobe ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 54 (Yellow/Red wire). If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  13. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 18-pin connector. Disconnect power transistor 8-pin connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Red wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 55 and power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow/Red wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  14. Measure resistance between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 55 (Yellow/Red wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace power transistor, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure). If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair Yellow/Red wire for a short to ground, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  15. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 18-pin connector. Disconnect power transistor 8-pin connector. Measure resistance of Yellow wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 54 and power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 7. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).
  16. Measure resistance between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 54 (Yellow wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace power transistor, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure). If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair Yellow wire for a short to ground, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure).

TEST NS-7A - CHECKING DRB-II COMMUNICATION

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. If DRB-II display is not blank, go to step 5). If DRB-II display is blank, disconnect DRB-II adapter from diagnostic connector. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between diagnostic connector terminal No. 12 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black wire to ground.
  2. Inspect DRB-II adapter Red battery lead for a good connection to power. If adapter Red battery lead does not have a good connection, repair as necessary, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) . If adapter Red battery lead has a good connection, go to next step.
  3. Connect a known good DRB-II adapter to vehicle diagnostic connector. Reconnect DRB-II to adapter. If DRB-II display is blank, go to next step. If DRB-II display is not blank, perform «TEST NS-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-1a-reading-fault-codes) .
  4. Connect a known good DRB-II to adapter on vehicle. If DRB-II display is not blank, perform «TEST NS-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-1a-reading-fault-codes) . If DRB-II display is blank, insert a known good cartridge into DRB-II. If DRB-II display is operational, perform «TEST NS-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-1a-reading-fault-codes) . If DRB-II is not operational, repeat steps 1) through 4).
  5. Using a voltmeter, backprobe ECU 10-pin connector terminal No. 110 (Black/White wire). Turn ignition on. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/White wire between ECU 10-pin connector and ignition splice, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  6. Disconnect DRB-II adapter from diagnostic connector. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 24-pin connector. Measure resistance of Yellow wire between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 1 and diagnostic connector terminal No. 5. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  7. Measure resistance between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair Yellow wire for a short to ground, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  8. Measure resistance of White wire between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 2 and diagnostic connector terminal No. 1. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in White wire, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  9. Measure resistance between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 2 (White wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair White wire for a short to ground, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .
  10. Connect a known good DRB-II adapter to vehicle diagnostic connector. Using DRB-II, attempt to read faults. If DRB-II is not able to read faults, go to next step. If DRB-II is able to read faults, perform «TEST NS-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-1a-reading-fault-codes) .
  11. Insert a known good cartridge into DRB-II. Using DRB-II, attempt to read faults. If DRB-II is able to read faults, perform «TEST NS-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ns-1a-reading-fault-codes) . If DRB-II is not able to read faults, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-1»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-1-verification-procedure) .

TEST DR-1A - CHECKING FAULT CODES

Connect DRB-II and DRB-II adapter to diagnostic connector. Read faults. If DRB-II display is blank or DRB-II displays NO RESPONSE, perform TEST DR-22A . FAULT CODES

TEST DR-2A - TESTING OXYGEN (O2) SENSOR

  1. Using DRB-II, erase fault codes. Start engine. Run engine until coolant temperature reaches more than 160°F (71°C). Read O2 sensor voltage. If O2 sensor voltage is not a constant zero volts, go to step 3). If O2 sensor voltage is a constant zero volts, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect O2 sensor connector. If O2 sensor voltage is still a constant zero volts, repair White wire for a short to ground between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 4 and O2 sensor connector, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If O2 sensor voltage is not a constant zero volts, replace O2 sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  3. Recheck O2 sensor voltage. If O2 sensor voltage is not a constant .03 volts, replace O2 sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If O2 sensor voltage is a constant .03 volts, disconnect O2 sensor connector. Connect a jumper wire between O2 sensor White wire and ground.
  4. If O2 sensor voltage is still a constant .03 volts, go to step 6). If O2 sensor voltage is not a constant .03 volts, turn ignition off. Measure resistance between O2 sensor Black wire and ground.
  5. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black wire between ECU terminal No. 24 and O2 sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace O2 sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 24-pin connector. Measure resistance of White wire between ECU connector terminal No. 4 and O2 sensor connector. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in White wire between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 4 and O2 sensor connector, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ECU and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .

TEST DR-3A - TESTING AIRFLOW SENSOR

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Using DRB-II, erase faults. Start engine and idle for more than one minute. Read faults. If fault Code 12 displays again, go to step 3). If fault Code 12 does not display again, read airflow sensor value. While monitoring DRB-II display, wiggle airflow sensor wiring harness.
  2. If airflow sensor value changes, repair wiring harness that caused airflow sensor value to change, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If airflow sensor value does not change, perform «TEST DR-15A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-15a-testing-switches) .
  3. Read airflow sensor value. If airflow sensor value is zero Hz (one Hertz is equal to one cycle per second), go to step 5). If airflow sensor value is more than 10 Hz, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If airflow sensor value is NOT zero or more than 10 Hz, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Inspect vacuum hoses and air cleaner assembly for restrictions and leaks. Repair as required, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If no restrictions or leaks exist, replace airflow sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  5. Disconnect airflow sensor connector. If vehicle is turbocharged, go to next step. If vehicle is non-turbo, measure voltage at airflow sensor 6-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Red wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 7). Coolant temperature sensor is located on cylinder head near thermostat housing.
  2. If coolant temperature sensor voltage value changes, repair wiring harness that caused coolant temperature sensor voltage value to change, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .   11. Measure resistance between ECU connector terminal No. 16 (Green/Yellow wire) and ground. TEST DR-10A - TESTING DETONATION SENSOR (TURBO)

  1. Using DRB-II, erase faults. Disconnect detonation sensor 2-pin connector. Detonation sensor is located on side of cylinder block. Measure resistance between detonation sensor 2-pin connector White wire and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground on White wire between detonation sensor and ECU 24-pin connector, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  2. Measure resistance of White wire between detonation sensor connector and ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 9. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in White wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  3. Reconnect all connectors. Road test vehicle. Read faults. If fault Code 31 is not displayed, perform TEST DR-15A. If fault Code 31 is displayed, replace detonation sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .

TEST DR-11A - TESTING INJECTORS

  1. Using DRB-II, erase faults. Start engine and idle for more than one minute. Read faults. If fault Code 41 displays again, go to step 3). If fault Code 41 does not display again, read faults and observe engine performance while wiggling injector wire harness.
  2. If engine performance changes or Code 41 sets, repair injector wiring harness that caused fault or engine change to occur when wire harness was wiggled, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If engine performance does not change or Code 41 does not set, perform «TEST DR-15A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-15a-testing-switches) .
  3. Disconnect Idle Speed Control (ISC) actuator 6-pin connector. Using DRB-II, actuate injector No. 1. If engine RPM drops, go to step 9). If engine RPM does not drop, turn ignition off. Disconnect injector No. 1 connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on injector No. 1 connector Yellow/Blue wire. If voltage is more than 8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 8 volts, go to step 5).
  4. If vehicle is turbocharged, go to step 7). If vehicle is non-turbo, measure voltage at injector No. 1 connector Yellow/Black wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace injector No. 1, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step.   6. Measure resistance of Yellow/Blue wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 51 and injector No. 1 connector. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow/Blue wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .   7. Measure voltage at injector No. 1 connector Black/Yellow wire.   2. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/Green wire between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 13 and Multi-Point Injection (MPI) control relay, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  3. While monitoring DRB-II display, wiggle wire harness between Multi-Point Injection (MPI) control relay and ECU. If Code 42 did not set, perform «TEST DR-14A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-14a-testing-ignition-coil) . If Code 42 displays, repair wiring harness that caused Code 42 to set, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .

TEST DR-13A - TESTING EGR TEMPERATURE SENSOR (CALIFORNIA)

  1. Using DRB-II, erase faults. Start engine and idle for more than one minute. Read faults. If fault Code 43 displays again, go to next step. If fault Code 43 does not display again, wiggle EGR temperature sensor wiring harness while monitoring DRB-II display. If fault Code 43 does not set when wiring harness is wiggled, perform «TEST DR-15A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-15a-testing-switches) . If fault Code 43 sets when wiring harness is wiggled, repair wiring harness that caused Code 43 to set, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  2. Read EGR temperature sensor value. Disconnect vacuum hose from EGR valve. Using an auxiliary vacuum pump, apply 5 in. Hg to EGR valve. If engine RPM drops, go to next step. If engine RPM does not drop, replace EGR valve, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  3. If EGR temperature value increased when engine RPM dropped, go to step 6). If EGR temperature value did not increase when engine RPM dropped, disconnect EGR temperature sensor connector. If EGR temperature sensor value is 10°F when EGR temperature sensor connector is disconnected, go to step 5). If EGR temperature sensor value is not 10°F when EGR temperature sensor connector is disconnected, go to next step.
  4. If EGR temperature value is 606°F when EGR temperature sensor connector was disconnected, repair short to ground in Blue/Yellow wire between EGR temperature sensor connector and ECU connector terminal No. 15, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If EGR temperature sensor value is not 606°F when EGR temperature sensor connector was disconnected, replace EGR temperature sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  5. Connect a jumper wire across EGR temperature sensor connector terminals. If EGR temperature sensor value is 606°F, replace EGR temperature sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If EGR temperature value is not 606°F, repair Green/Black wire between EGR temperature sensor and splice, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  6. Ensure engine is off with ignition on. Using DRB-II, actuate EGR solenoid. If EGR solenoid does not click, go to next step. If EGR solenoid clicks, repair leak or restriction in EGR vacuum hose or solenoid, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  7. Using a voltmeter, backprobe EGR solenoid connector Red wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Red wire between Multi-Point Injection (MPI) control relay and EGR solenoid, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .

  10. Measure resistance between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 53 (Black/Yellow on turbo) or (Brown/White on non-turbo) and EGR solenoid connector. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black/Yellow wire (turbo) or Brown/White wire (non-turbo), and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . TEST DR-14A - TESTING IGNITION COIL

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Using DRB-II, erase faults. Start engine and idle for more than one minute. Read faults. If fault Code 44 is displayed again, go to next step. If fault Code 44 is not displayed again, go to step 3).
  2. Ensure engine and ignition are off. Disconnect power transistor 8-pin connector. Power transistor 8-pin connector is located under ignition coil assembly. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 8 (Yellow/Green wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 5). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 10).
  3. Wiggle power transistor wiring harness while monitoring DRB-II display. If fault Code 44 does not set when wiring harness is wiggled, go to next step. If fault Code 44 sets when wiring harness is wiggled, repair wiring harness that caused Code 44 to set, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  4. Wiggle ignition coil wiring harness while monitoring DRB-II display. If fault Code 44 does not set when wiring harness is wiggled, perform «TEST DR-15A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-15a-testing-switches) . If fault Code 44 sets when wiring harness is wiggled, repair wiring harness that caused Code 44 to set, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  5. Disconnect ignition coil 3-pin connector. Measure voltage on ignition coil 3-pin female connector terminal No. 3 (Black/White wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/White wire between ignition coil and ignition switch, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  6. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ignition coil 3-pin female connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Green wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Yellow/Green wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  7. Measure resistance of Yellow/Green wire between ignition coil 3-pin female connector and power transistor 8-pin connector. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow/Green wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  8. Remove ignition coil assembly from vehicle. Disconnect ignition coil pigtail. Measure resistance of Yellow/Green wire on ignition coil pigtail. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ignition coil pigtail, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  9. Inspect ignition coil pigtail for obvious damage. If no damage is present, replace ignition coil assembly, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If damage is present, replace ignition coil pigtail, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  10. Measure voltage on power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Black wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 16). If voltage is less than 10 volts, disconnect ignition coil 3-pin connector.
  11. Measure voltage on ignition coil 3-pin female connector terminal No. 3 (Black/White wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/White wire between ignition switch and ignition coil, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  12. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ignition coil 3-pin female connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Black wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Yellow/Black wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  13. Measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire between ignition coil 3-pin female connector and power transistor 8-pin connector. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow/Black wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  14. Remove ignition coil assembly from vehicle. Disconnect ignition coil pigtail. Measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire on ignition coil pigtail. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ignition coil pigtail, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  15. Inspect ignition coil pigtail for obvious damage. If no damage is present, replace ignition coil assembly, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .   16. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step.   17. Reconnect power transistor connector. Using an analog voltmeter, backprobe ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 54 (Yellow wire). Start engine. If voltage is more than .25 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than .25 volts, go to step 20).
  18. Turn engine off. Disconnect ECU 18-pin connector. Disconnect power transistor 8-pin connector. Measure resistance of Yellow wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 54 and power transistor 8-pin connector terminal No. 7. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  19. Measure resistance between power transistor 8-pin connector Yellow wire and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace power transistor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  20. Without disconnecting ECU connector, using a voltmeter, backprobe ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 55 (Yellow/Red wire). If voltage is less than .25 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than .25 volts, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  21. Turn engine off. Disconnect ECU 18-pin connector. Disconnect power transistor 8-pin connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Red wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 55 and power transistor connector terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow/Red wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  22. Measure resistance between Yellow/Red wire and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace power transistor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . TEST DR-15A - TESTING SWITCHES

  1. Ensure DRB-II and adapter are connected to diagnostic connector. Read crank signal value. While watching DRB-II display, start engine. If crank signal does not change, go to step 5). If crank signal changes, turn ignition on. Read idle switch value. Ensure throttle cable is properly adjusted before proceeding.
  2. While monitoring display, open and close throttle. If DRB-II display changes, go to step 6). If DRB-II display does not change, turn engine off. Turn ignition on. Disconnect idle switch 1-pin connector. Measure voltage between idle switch connector Green wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace idle switch, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 24-pin connector. Measure resistance between idle switch connector Green wire and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Green wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  4. Measure resistance of Green wire between idle switch connector and ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 14. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Green wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  5. Turn engine off. Using a voltmeter, backprobe ECU 10-pin connector terminal No. 108 (Black/Yellow wire). While watching voltmeter, start engine. If voltage is present when cranking engine, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If voltage is not present when cranking engine, repair open circuit in Black/Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  6. Ensure engine is running. Read Power Steering (P/S) switch status. If DRB-II displays P/S open, go to step 8). If DRB-II does not display P/S open, disconnect P/S pump connector. If display does not show P/S open, go to next step. If display shows P/S open, ensure power steering pump is operational. Replace P/S switch, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 24-pin connector. Measure resistance between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 5 (Yellow/Black wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Yellow/Black wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  8. Turn steering wheel left and right while monitoring display. If DRB-II displays P/S closed while turning steering wheel, go to step 11). If DRB-II does not display P/S closed while turning steering wheel, turn engine OFF. Disconnect P/S connector. Turn ignition on.
  9. Connect a jumper wire between power steering connector Yellow/Black wire and ground. If DRB-II displays P/S closed, ensure power steering pump is operational. Replace P/S switch, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If DRB-II does not display P/S closed, turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 24-pin connector.
  10. Measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 5 and power steering connector. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow/Black wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  11. If vehicle is not equipped with A/C, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with A/C, read A/C switch status. While monitoring DRB-II display, turn A/C switch on and cycle blower switch. If DRB-II display does not show a change in A/C status, repair open circuit between A/C switch and ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If DRB-II display does show a change in A/C status, go to next step.
  12. If vehicle is equipped with a M/T, perform «TEST DR-16A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-16a-testing-sensors) . If vehicle is equipped with an A/T, turn engine off. Turn ignition on. Read Park/Neutral (P/N) switch status. Move gear selector through all gear positions. If DRB-II display corresponds with gear position, perform TEST DR-16A. If DRB-II display does not correspond with gear position, disconnect ECU 10-pin connector.
  13. Place gear selector in Park. Measure voltage between ECU 10-pin connector terminal No. 108 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10 volts, place gear selector in Drive. If voltage is more than 10 volts in Drive, ensure inhibitor switch is correctly adjusted. Replace inhibitor switch as required, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If voltage is less than 10 volts in Drive, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  14. Disconnect Multi-Point Injection (MPI) control relay. Disconnect inhibitor switch connector. Measure resistance between MPI control relay connector terminal No. 9 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  15. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, measure resistance of Black/Yellow wire between inhibitor switch connector terminal No. 9 and ECU 10-pin connector terminal No. 108. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black/Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, measure voltage between inhibitor switch connector terminal No. 9 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground.
  16. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/Yellow wire between inhibitor switch and ignition switch, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If voltage is more than 10 volts, ensure inhibitor switch is correctly adjusted. Adjust as necessary. If inhibitor switch is correctly adjusted, replace inhibitor switch, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .

TEST DR-16A - TESTING SENSORS

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Start engine. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Read oxygen (O2) sensor value. If O2 sensor is not switching from rich to lean, go to step 3). If O2 sensor is switching from rich to lean, read airflow sensor value. If airflow sensor value is 35-100 Hz (a Hertz is equal to one cycle per second), go to step 4). If airflow sensor value is not 35-100 Hz, turn engine off.
  2. Inspect air induction system for restrictions or leaks. If no restrictions or leaks exist, replace airflow sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If restrictions or leaks exist, repair as required, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  3. If O2 sensor voltage is locked on .03 or zero volts, perform «TEST DR-2A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-2a-testing-oxygen-o2) . If O2 sensor voltage is not locked on .03 or zero volts, check for engine running either rich or lean. If engine is running rich or lean, repair as required, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If engine is not running rich or lean, replace O2 sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  4. With engine running at normal operating temperature, read air temperature sensor value. If air temperature sensor value is not within 10°F of underhood temperature, replace air temperature sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If air temperature sensor value is within 10°F of underhood temperature, turn engine off. Turn ignition on.
  5. Ensure throttle cable is adjusted and throttle is at idle position. Read Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) voltage. If TPS value is .48-.51 volts, go to next step. If TPS voltage is not .48-.51 volts, attempt to adjust TPS. If TPS cannot be adjusted, replace TPS, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If TPS can be adjusted, go to next step.
  6. While watching DRB-II display, slowly open throttle to Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position. If transition is not smooth, replace TPS, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If transition is smooth, start engine. Set engine speed to 2000 RPM. Read voltage sense value. If voltage sense value is not 13.1-14.5 volts, repair charging system as required, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If voltage sense is 13.1-14.5 volts, go to next step.
  7. Allow engine to idle. Read coolant sensor value. If coolant sensor value is 180-215°F (82-102°C), go to next step. If coolant sensor value is not 180-215°F (82-102°C), measure coolant temperature at radiator. If radiator temperature is within 10°F, repair cooling system as necessary, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If radiator temperature is not within 10°F, replace coolant temperature sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  8. While monitoring display, wiggle coolant temperature sensor wiring harness. If coolant temperature sensor value does not change abnormally, go to next step.   9. Read barometric pressure sensor value. If DRB-II barometric pressure sensor value is within 1 in. Hg of actual value, perform «TEST DR-17A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-17a-testing-idle-speed) . If DRB-II barometric pressure sensor value is not within 1 in. Hg of actual value, turn ignition off.
  10. Inspect ECU and airflow sensor connector for damage. If damage is present, repair as necessary, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If damage is not present, replace airflow sensor, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .

TEST DR-17A - TESTING IDLE SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Using DRB-II, read timing advance. While monitoring DRB-II display, set engine speed to 2000 RPM. If timing advance does not increase, replace Electronic Control Unit (ECU), and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  2. If timing advance increases, allow engine to idle. Disconnect Idle Speed Control (ISC) actuator. While observing engine RPM, actuate injector No. 1. If engine RPM does not drop, go to step 18). If engine RPM drops, actuate fuel injector No. 2. If engine RPM does not drop, go to step 18). If engine RPM drops, go to next step.
  3. Actuate injector No. 3. If engine RPM does not drop, go to step 18). If engine RPM drops, actuate injector No. 4. If engine RPM does not drop, go to step 18). If engine speed drops, stop actuation test. Reconnect ISC actuator connector. NOTE: Engine should still be running for following step.
  4. Read Automatic Idle Speed (AIS) value. While monitoring DRB-II display, disconnect injector No. 1. If AIS value changes, reconnect injector No. 1 and perform «TEST DR-18A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-18a-testing-fuel-pressure) . If AIS value does not change, reconnect injector No. 1. Disconnect Idle Speed Control (ISC) connector. Measure voltage at ISC connector terminal No. 5 (Red wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit to splice on Red wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  5. Measure voltage at ISC connector terminal No. 2 (Red wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit to splice on Red wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  6. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ISC actuator terminals No. 1 (Blue wire) and No. 3 (Yellow wire). If resistance is between 28 and 100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not between 28 and 100 ohms, replace ISC actuator, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  7. Measure resistance between ISC actuator terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 6 (White wire). If resistance is between 28 and 100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not between 28 and 100 ohms, replace ISC actuator, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  8. Measure resistance between ISC actuator terminals No. 1 (Blue wire) and No. 2 (Red wire). If resistance is between 14 and 50 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not between 14 and 50 ohms, replace ISC actuator, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  9. Measure resistance between ISC connector terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Red wire). If resistance is between 14 and 50 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not between 14 and 50 ohms, replace ISC actuator, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  10. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect Electronic Control Unit (ECU) 18-pin connector. Measure resistance between ECU 18-pin connector terminals No. 67 (White wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in White wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  11. Measure resistance between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 68 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Black wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  12. Measure resistance between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 58 (Blue wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Blue wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  13. Measure resistance between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 59 (Yellow wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  14. Measure resistance of White wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 67 and ISC connector terminal No. 6 If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in White wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  15. Measure resistance of Black wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 68 and ISC connector terminal No. 4. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  16. Measure resistance of Blue wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 58 and ISC connector terminal No. 1. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Blue wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  17. Measure resistance of Yellow wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 59 and ISC connector terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  18. Stop actuation test. Connect a scope to secondary ignition. Check secondary ignition. If secondary ignition system is not okay, repair as required, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If secondary ignition system is okay, check for engine mechanical defects. If mechanical defects are found, repair as required, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If no mechanical defects are found, replace injector for affected cylinder, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .

TEST DR-18A - TESTING FUEL PRESSURE

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump connector at fuel tank. Crank engine for 10 seconds. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. WARNING: High fuel pressure may be present in fuel lines. Open fuel system with caution. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE at beginning of article.
  2. Connect fuel pressure gauge and adapter to fuel rail. Reconnect negative battery cable. Connect jumper wire between battery positive terminal and single-wire fuel pump check connector Black/White wire located near battery in engine compartment. Ensure no fuel leaks are present.
  3. Disconnect jumper wire to fuel pump check connector. Start engine and idle. Disconnect and plug fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose. If vehicle is a non-turbo, fuel pressure should be 47-54 psi (3.3-3.8 kg/cm 2 ). If vehicle is a turbo with M/T, fuel pressure should be 36-44 psi (2.5-3.1 kg/cm 2 ). If vehicle is a turbo with A/T, fuel pressure should be 41-50 psi (2.9-3.5 kg/cm 2 ). If fuel pressure is not within specification, repair as necessary, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If fuel pressure is within specification, go to next step.
  4. Reconnect vacuum hose to fuel pressure regulator. If vehicle is a non-turbo, fuel pressure should be 37-43 psi (2.6-3.0 kg/cm 2 ). If vehicle is a turbo with M/T, fuel pressure should be 26-34 psi (1.8-2.4 kg/cm 2 ). If vehicle is a turbo with A/T, fuel pressure should be 32-38 psi (2.2-2.7 kg/cm 2 ). If fuel pressure is not within specification, repair as necessary, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If fuel pressure is within specification, perform «TEST DR-19A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-19a-testing-purge-system) .

TEST DR-19A - TESTING PURGE SYSTEM

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Connect DRB-II and adapter to diagnostic connector. Using DRB-II, actuate purge control solenoid. Listen for purge control solenoid to click. If purge control solenoid does not click, go to next step. If purge control solenoid clicks, inspect purge control vacuum system. Repair as necessary, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If purge control vacuum system is okay, perform «TEST DR-20A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-20a-testing-egr-system) .
  2. Disconnect purge control solenoid connector. Measure voltage at purge control solenoid connector terminal No. 2 (Red wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Red wire between purge control solenoid and splice, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off.
  3. Disconnect Electronic Control Unit (ECU) 18-pin connector. Measure resistance of Black/White wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 62 and purge control solenoid connector terminal No. 1. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black/White wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  4. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, measure resistance between purge control solenoid connector terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace purge control solenoid, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/White wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .

TEST DR-20A - TESTING EGR SYSTEM

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. If vehicle is not equipped with California emissions, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with California emissions, actuate EGR solenoid. Listen for EGR solenoid to click. If EGR solenoid clicks, go to step 3). If EGR solenoid did not click, go to step 4).
  2. If vehicle is equipped with an EGR, go to step 3). If vehicle is not equipped with an EGR, perform «TEST DR-21A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-21a-inspection-of-mechanical) .
  3. Inspect EGR vacuum system for leaks or damage. If EGR vacuum system is okay, perform «TEST DR-21A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-21a-inspection-of-mechanical) . If EGR vacuum system has leaks or damage, repair as necessary, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  4. Disconnect EGR solenoid connector. Measure voltage at EGR solenoid connector Red wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Red wire between EGR solenoid and splice, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect Electronic Control Unit (ECU) 18-pin connector.
  5. If vehicle is a non-turbo, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with a turbo, measure resistance of Black/Yellow wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 53 and EGR solenoid connector. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black/Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to step 7).
  6. Measure resistance of Brown/White wire between EGR solenoid connector and ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 53. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Brown/White wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  7. Measure resistance between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 53 and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Brown/White wire (non-turbo) or Black/Yellow wire (turbo), and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace EGR solenoid, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .

TEST DR-21A - INSPECTION OF MECHANICAL SYSTEMS & COMPONENTS

The systems controlled by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) are functioning as intended. This indicates that a mechanical system malfunction is the cause of the driveability problem. Check if any TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS (TSBs) relate to this driveability problem. The following areas should be examined

  1. Check ignition timing.
  2. Check engine vacuum.
  3. Check engine compression.
  4. Check valve timing.
  5. Check for exhaust system restriction.
  6. Check torque converter stall speed.
  7. Check for fuel contamination.
  8. Check secondary ignition circuit for abnormal scope pattern.

TEST DR-22A - CHECKING DRB-II COMMUNICATION

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. If DRB-II does not display a blank screen, go to step 4). If DRB-II displays a blank screen, disconnect DRB-II adapter from diagnostic connector. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between diagnostic connector terminal No. 12 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Black wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  2. Inspect DRB-II adapter Red battery lead for good battery connection. Repair as required, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If battery connection is okay, connect a known good DRB-II adapter to diagnostic connector.
  3. Reconnect DRB-II. If DRB-II display is not blank, perform «TEST DR-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-1a-checking-fault-codes) . If DRB-II display is blank, connect a known good DRB-II to adapter. If DRB-II display is not blank, perform «TEST DR-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-1a-checking-fault-codes) . If DRB-II display blank, insert a known good program cartridge into DRB-II. DRB-II display should be operational. Perform «TEST DR-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-1a-checking-fault-codes) .
  4. Disconnect DRB-II adapter from diagnostic connector. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Electronic Control Unit (ECU) 24-pin connector. Measure resistance of Yellow wire between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 1 and diagnostic connector terminal No. 1.
  5. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, measure resistance between ECU connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Yellow wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) .
  6. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, measure resistance of White wire between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 2 and diagnostic connector terminal No. 10. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in White wire, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If resistance is more than 10 ohms, connect a known good DRB-II adapter to diagnostic connector. Attempt to read faults. If DRB-II is able to read faults, perform «TEST DR-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-1a-checking-fault-codes) .
  7. If DRB-II is not able to read faults, connect a good DRB-II to adapter. Attempt to read faults. If DRB-II is able to read faults, perform «TEST DR-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-1a-checking-fault-codes) . If DRB-II is not able to read faults, insert a known good program cartridge in DRB-II.
  8. Attempt to read faults. If DRB-II is not able to read faults, replace ECU, and perform «TEST VER-2»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-ver-2-verification-procedure) . If DRB-II is able to read faults, perform «TEST DR-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-1a-checking-fault-codes) .

TEST VER-1 - VERIFICATION PROCEDURE

Reconnect and reassemble all previously tested components. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, test is complete. If engine does not start, check for any TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS (TSBs) related to this problem. If no TSBs exist, return to TEST NS-1A . If TSBs exist, repair as required.

TEST VER-2 - VERIFICATION PROCEDURE

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Reconnect and reassemble all previously tested components. Turn ignition on. Ensure DRB-II is attached to diagnostic connector. Erase faults. Start engine. Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM for 10 seconds.
  2. Read faults. If faults exist, go to next step. If no faults exist, road test vehicle for a driveability problem. If a driveability problem does not exist, test is complete. If a driveability problem exists, after test driving vehicle, go to next step.
  3. Check for any TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS (TSBs) related to this problem. If there are no TSBs, return to «TEST DR-1A»(/mitsubishi/eclipse/i-1989-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-18l__test-dr-1a-checking-fault-codes) . If there are TSBs, repair as required.
