ENTERING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be retrieved using one of the following methods
- Using an analog Volt-Ohmmeter (VOM).
- Using Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
- Using Superstar II (007-0041B) scan tester.
- Using New Generation Star (007-00500) scan tester.
- Using an aftermarket scan tester
Codes are accessed from PCM using Data Link Connector (DLC). see scheme 1 Procedure to retrieve codes varies with equipment used. Follow QUICK TEST for specific procedure used to retrieve codes. If no code or only intermittent fault is found after performing QUICK TEST, proceed to SWITCH MONITOR TEST.
Note. Before hooking up equipment to diagnose EEC system, prepare and visually inspect vehicle. See VISUAL CHECK & VEHICLE PREPARATION.
READING SELF-DIAGNOSTIC CODES
Note. EEC system will not display a PASS code (system okay).
PCM outputs self-diagnostic codes one digit at a time. Record codes in order received. These codes indicate recent faults in system and appear in order of importance. Service first fault to appear, clear PCM memory, then check for reappearing or new fault codes. Use CODE REFERENCE table to find correct CIRCUIT TEST.
QUICK TEST
Note. Before performing QUICK TEST, ensure mechanical condition of engine is sound and necessary diagnostic equipment has been properly connected. See ENTERING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS and EQUIPMENT HOOK-UP.
SWITCH MONITOR TEST
Perform this test if no code is present after performing KOEO and KOER portions of QUICK TEST. Switch monitor test determines if switch circuitry is okay. In this procedure, each device is tested individually. Perform test using Super Star II tester or Analog Volt-Ohmmeter (VOM).
TEST EQUIPMENT
Following equipment is recommended for performing EEC system circuit tests. DO NOT attempt to test this system without proper equipment. Damage to vehicle components may result if improper equipment is used.
- Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with minimum 10-megohm input impedance.
- A breakout box and breakout box adapter (007-00057 for MTX) or (T92C-6000-AH for A/T) is required to perform tests on system. Test pin number mentioned in circuit tests refers to test pin number on breakout box. Breakout box Adapter (T92C-6000-AH) has an A/B position selector switch. Ensure switch is in correct position for each test step. If no switch position is given, switch can be in either position. Once breakout box has been installed during a test sequence, it may stay connected for remainder of that test, unless stated otherwise. Aftermarket breakout boxes are also available.
- Vacuum gauge with 0-30 in. Hg range and resolution (units on scale) of 1 in. Hg.
- Tachometer with 0-6000 RPM range, +/- 40 RPM accuracy, and a resolution of 20 RPM.
- Vacuum pump with 0-30 in. Hg range.
- Timing light.
- Spark Tester (D81P-6666-A or ST-125) is required. A modified side electrode spark plug is not sufficient for these procedures.
- Fuel Injection Pressure Gauge (T80L-9974-A).
- 12-volt test light (non-powered type).
- Jumper wire about 15" long.

Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM)
Note. Enter this test only when Code 01 is displayed during self-test procedures (KOEO or KOER). This test is only intended to diagnose following EEC system-related spark and electrical circuits (IDM, SPOUT and VPWR to ignition).

CIRCUIT PIN IDENTIFICATION
1) Check System Integrity Visually check all wiring, connectors and components for damage, shorting or looseness. If a fault is found, repair as necessary. If no fault is found, go to next step.
2) Check Spark At Coil Connect spark tester between coil secondary cable and ground. Crank engine. If spark is present and no other fault except for Code 01 is found, replace PCM. If spark is not present, go to next step.
3) Continuous IDM At Coil Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition coil. Connect test light between IDM and PWR wires at ignition coil. Crank engine. If test light flashes continuously while cranking, go to next step. If test light does not flash, go to step 5).
4) Check Power To Ignition Coil Disconnect ignition coil connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and PWR wire at ignition coil. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, replace coil. If reading is less than 10 volts, repair PWR circuit between ignition coil and ignition switch.
5) Check For Continuous IDM From Ignition Control Module Turn ignition off. Disconnect ICM connector. Using 2 jumper wires, jump SPOUT and GND terminals on connector to matching terminals on ICM (leave IDM terminal free). (Scheme 2) Connect test light between IDM on ICM and PWR wire at ignition coil. Crank engine. If test light does not flash, go to next step. If test light flashes as engine is cranked, repair IDM wire between ICM and coil.
6) Check ICM Ground Turn ignition off. Disconnect ICM. Connect test light between PWR wire at ignition coil and GND wire at ICM connector. (Scheme 2) Turn ignition on. If light does not come on, repair ICM GND wire. If light comes on, go to next step.
7) Check SPOUT Circuit At ICM Turn ignition off. Disconnect ICM. Connect a test light between ignition coil PWR wire and SPOUT terminal at ICM harness connector. (Scheme 2) Crank engine. If test light does not flash, go to next step. If test light flashes, check SPOUT wire for intermittent short to ground. If wiring is okay, replace ICM.
8) Check SPOUT Circuit From PCM Turn ignition off. Disconnect ICM. Install breakout box (leaving PCM disconnected). Measure resistance between breakout box SPOUT test pin and SPOUT wire at ICM harness connector. (Scheme 2) If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open SPOUT wire between PCM and ICM. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, check SPOUT wire for short to ground or any other wire. If wiring is okay, replace PCM.

Solenoid Function Test
To properly diagnose solenoid, check it in ON and OFF positions. When test procedure requires click test, check appropriate solenoid as follows
- BANK/INJ Install breakout box. Connect PCM to breakout box. Turn ignition on. Injectors should click when engine is cranked.
- CANP Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Apply vacuum to vacuum nipple of canister purge solenoid. Using jumper wire, ground CANP test pin at breakout box. Vacuum should release.
- EGRC Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignitionon. Apply vacuum to hose from intake manifold, vacuum should hold. Using jumper wire, ground ERGC test pin of breakout box. Vacuum should release.
- EGRV Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Apply vacuum from EGR valve. Vacuum should not hold. Using jumper wire, ground EGRV test pin of breakout box. Apply vacuum to EGR valve. Vacuum should hold.
- FPRC Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Apply vacuum to FPRC solenoid. Vacuum should hold. Using jumper wire, ground FPRC test pin of breakout box. Vacuum should release.
- HSIA Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Apply vacuum to HSIA solenoid. Vacuum should hold. Using jumper wire, ground HSIA test pin of breakout box. Vacuum should release.
- IAC Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using jumper wire, ground IAC test pin of breakout box intermittently. IAC solenoid should click when test pin is grounded.
- VRIS Disconnect vacuum hoses at solenoid. Verify airflow between ports on solenoid. See VACUUM SPECIFICATION (VRIS SOLENOID) table. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using jumper wire, ground VRIS test pin of breakout box. Verify airflow between ports on solenoid.
