THERMOSTAT

On 1.6L and 2.3L engines, thermostat is located in thermostat housing on cylinder head. On 3.8L, 5.0L and 5.8L engines, thermostat is located in thermostat housing on intake manifold. Test thermostat to make sure it starts to open and is fully open at specified temperatures.

THERMOSTAT OPENING TEMPERATURES

PRESSURE CAP

On Escort, EXP and Lynx models, a 16 psi (1.1 kg/cm 2 ) pressure cap is used. Test cap at 13-19 psi (.9-1.3 kg/cm 2 ). On Capri and Mustang models with standard cooling, a 13 psi (.9 kg/cm 2 ) pressure cap is used which should be tested at 11-17 psi (.7-1.2 kg/cm 2 ). On all other models, a 16 psi (1.1 kg/cm 2 ) pressure cap is used. Test this cap at 13-19 psi (.9-1.3 kg/cm 2 ).

WATER PUMP

Water pump is of conventional design. On 2.3L HSC engine water pump impeller is driven by timing belt. If wear or damage exists, replace water pump. No attempt to overhaul or repair pump should be made.

MAINTENANCE

Vehicle maintenance schedule "B" or (B) is on glovebox and engine emission control information decal. Check coolant condition annually. Drain, clean, flush and refill system if dirt or rust impairs cooling ability. Hoses and clamps should be inspected every 3 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
