Wheel Alignment Specifications & Procedures: Other Mercury Sable IV

FLOOR JACK

WARNINGNever run the engine with one wheel off the ground, such as when changing a tire. The wheel still on the ground could cause the vehicle to move.
CAUTIONThe jack provided with the vehicle is intended to be used in an emergency for changing a deflated tire. To avoid damage to the vehicle, never use the jack to hoist the vehicle for any other purpose. Refer to the Owner Literature when using the jack supplied with the vehicle. Under no circumstances should the vehicle ever be lifted by the front or rear control arms, halfshafts or front wheel Constant Velocity (CV) joints. Severe damage to the vehicle could result. Do not attempt to use jack pressure on either the front bumper or the rear bumper of any vehicle. Damage to bumper covers will occur.

For jacking points (Scheme 2)

HOIST

WARNINGAll four hoist contact points must contact the designated vehicle lifting locations. Using other areas to lift the vehicle may cause damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
CAUTIONDo not allow the lift arms, pads or adapters to contact the front or rear control arms, halfshafts, front wheel Constant Velocity (CV) joints, steering linkage, stabilizer bar, or compress the stabilizer bar link insulators. Damage to suspension, exhaust and steering linkage components may occur if care is not exercised when positioning the lift adapters prior to lifting the vehicle. Under no circumstances should the vehicle be lifted by the front control arms or rear control arms. Severe damage to the vehicle could result.

CHECKING PROCEDURE

Ride height is checked by measuring distance between lip of fender(s) and ground. (Scheme 3) Vehicle must be in level, static ground position with full fluids, and fuel tank at least half full. See RIDE HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS table. If ride height does not meet specification, and no unusual load is present, check for damaged components or non-standard replacement suspension components.

RIDE HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS

Front

  1. Index-mark the alignment plate to the strut tower. (Scheme 4) Remove the three strut nuts. Center punch the five spot welds to be drilled. Using a suitable drill, remove the five accessible spot welds. (Scheme 5) Do not drill deeper than necessary to remove the alignment plate.
  2. Position the vehicle on a hoist. Raise the vehicle enough to push the strut downward. The strut studs must be below the alignment plate. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry the two tabs up and off the alignment plate. (Scheme 6)
  3. Using a spot weld breaker or flat chisel, remove the three remaining spot welds and the plate. Do not damage the strut studs. Make sure the strut studs are below the alignment plate.
  4. Prepare the strut tower and the alignment plate. Clean and paint any exposed metal. Straighten or install a new alignment plate as necessary. Position the strut studs into the adjustment slots. (Scheme 7)
  5. Install the alignment plate, then install the strut nuts. Do not tighten the nuts at this time. Adjust the camber and caster. It may be necessary to remove the tabs to adjust the caster. Tighten the strut nuts to specification.
  6. Check the alignment settings. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Readjust the camber and caster as necessary.
  7. Drill three holes, in proximity to the strut nuts, through the alignment plate and strut tower. Install the three pop rivets. Clean and paint any exposed metal.

Rear

Rear camber is not adjustable. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . If camber is not within specification, check for damaged suspension components, deteriorated bushings or distorted body mounting points.

Ensure steering wheel is centered, and maintains centered. Reposition the bellows clamps as necessary. (Scheme 8) Do not allow the steering gear bellows to twist when the front wheel spindle tie rod is rotated. Loosen tie rod end lock nuts. Clean and lubricate tie rod threads. Turn inner tie rod to adjust toe-in. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS. Tighten tie rod end lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure bellows clamps are in place.

Rear (Sedan)

  1. Loosen the nuts approximately one full turn. (Scheme 9) Rotate the adjusting cam to achieve the specified toe setting. (Scheme 10) See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-163061-S05964729442004061700000).
  2. Make sure that the toe settings are not disturbed while tightening the nuts. While holding the adjusting cam, tighten the nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-163061-S10298554632004061700000).

Rear (Wagon)

Loosen the nut. (Scheme 11) Rotate the adjusting cam to achieve the specified toe setting. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS. Make sure that the toe settings are not disturbed while tightening the nut. While holding the adjusting cam, tighten the nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
