Electronic Steering 1 illustration ~589 words

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery.

Removal

Remove rack and pinion assembly. See STEERING GEAR . Remove power steering pressure return and pump outlet line connector kit from actuator. Remove 2 bolts retaining actuator to rack and pinion steering gear.

Installation

Ensure 2 seals between steering gear and actuator are in position. Align actuator on steering gear. Install and tighten 2 actuator-to-steering gear bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install rack and pinion assembly.

Scheme 10: Installation

Removal & Installation (3.0L 2-Valve)

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove drive belt. Remove generator mounting bolts and generator.
  2. Drain and remove radiator recovery reservoir. Remove power steering pressure and return hoses from pump and drain fluid into container. Remove idler pulley from pump support.
  3. Remove power steering bracket mounting bolt located under belt tensioner mount. Remove 2 nuts from power steering bracket studs. Remove studs. Remove power steering pump bracket and pump. Remove pump pulley using Pulley Remover (T69L-10300-B) if necessary.
  4. Install pump pulley using Pulley Replacer (T65P-3A733-C). To install pump, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-55511-S01505366252001092500000) .

Removal & Installation (3.0L 4-Valve)

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove drive belt. Remove generator mounting bolts and generator. Drain and remove radiator coolant reservoir.
  2. Remove pump reservoir hose and drain fluid into container. Remove power steering pump pulley using Pulley Remover (T69L-10300-B). Disconnect pressure hose from pump. Remove 3 power steering pump mounting bolts and pump.
  3. Install pump pulley using Pulley Replacer (T65P-3A733-C). To install pump, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-55511-S01505366252001092500000) .

Removal & Installation (3.4L SHO)

Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove drive belt. Remove pump reservoir hose and drain fluid into container. Remove pressure hose from pump. Remove 3 bolts and power steering pump. Remove power steering pump pulley by removing nut on pulley. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Working inside vehicle, remove bolts retaining boot at lower end of steering column. Disconnect steering column intermediate shaft from steering column lower yoke.
  2. Position boot out of way and disconnect intermediate shaft from steering gear at coupling. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Disconnect oxygen sensor connectors. Remove necessary nuts and exhaust "Y" pipe from vehicle.
  3. Support rear of engine subframe using jackstands. Remove tie rod ends from left and right knuckles. See «TIE ROD ENDS»(ref-55511-S42403088712001092500000) . Remove steering gear-to-subframe mounting bolts.
  4. Remove subframe-to-body mounting bolts. Lower jackstands to allow subframe to drop 4 inches. Remove steering shaft heat shield. Remove power steering hose bracket bolt. Remove left stabilizer bar links.
  5. Disconnect harness connectors from power steering pressure switch and VAPS actuator solenoid. Position steering gear to ease removal of hose fittings. Place a drain pan under vehicle and remove hydraulic hose fittings from steering gear. Remove steering gear through left wheel opening. To install, reverse removal procedure. Align front end as necessary. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in the WHEEL ALIGNMENT section.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove tie rod end cotter pins and castle nuts. Separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles. Loosen tie rod end lock nuts.
  2. Mark tie rod end lock nut position for installation reference. Remove tie rod ends and lock nuts from tie rods.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Install and tighten NEW castle nut to align cotter pin slot. Install NEW cotter pins. Adjust toe-in as necessary. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in the WHEEL ALIGNMENT section. Tighten tie rod end lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
