COOLING SYSTEM OVERHEATS/ELECTRIC COOLING FAN DOES NOT RUN (LOW AND/OR HIGH SPEED)

  1. Preliminary Checks Perform the following checks: Engine coolant level Cooling fan harness connections Coolant leaks Water/anti-freeze mixture Radiator condition Collapsed/restricted radiator hoses Radiator pressure cap Overflow system If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Recheck system operation. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  2. Perform PCM Quick Test Go to QUICK TEST. See «G - TESTS W/ CODES - 3.0L»(ref-24094) or «G - TESTS W/ CODES - 3.4L»(ref-24095) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If a cooling system related DTC is present, go to «TESTING»(ref-51262-S27072273932001011600000) . If no DTCs are present, go to next step.

  4. Only One Cooling Fan Motor Operates If one cooling fan motor is inoperative when other cooling fan motor operates normally, perform the following as indicated: Go to TESTING and perform step 85) in «CONSTANT CONTROL RELAY MODULE (CCRM)»(ref-51262-S26817041232001011600000) . If operation is not as specified, go to next step.
  5. Electric Cooling Fan Functional Check Install scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, access OUTPUT TEST MODE. Command cooling fans on. Observe cooling fan operation at both speeds (wait 30 seconds after commanding high speed fan on). If cooling fans operate at all speeds, turn ignition off and go to next step. If operation is not as specified, perform the following as indicated: Go to TESTING and perform step 40) in «CONSTANT CONTROL RELAY MODULE (CCRM)»(ref-51262-S26817041232001011600000) .

ELECTRIC COOLING FAN ALWAYS RUNS

Note. Before proceeding, ensure all accessories are off, A/C and defroster is off, and engine is cooled (so cooling fan would not normally come on).

  1. Electric Cooling Fan Check Start engine. If cooling fan runs continuously, go to next step. If cooling fan does not run continuously, go to step 15).
  2. Preliminary Checks Check the following: Wiring harness to cooling fan. Wiring harness to A/C high pressure switch or A/C pressure sensor (on 2-speed cooling fan applications). Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  3. Perform PCM Quick Test Go to QUICK TEST. See «G - TESTS W/ CODES - 3.0L»(ref-24094) or «G - TESTS W/ CODES - 3.4L»(ref-24095) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If a cooling system related DTC is present, go to «TESTING»(ref-51262-S27072273932001011600000) . If no DTCs are present, go to next step.
  4. One-Speed Cooling Fan Applications If equipped with a one-speed cooling fan, perform the following as indicated: Go to TESTING and perform step 60) in FAN CONTROL (FC) RELAYS. If equipped with a 2-speed fan, go to next step.
  5. Vehicle Identification Go to next step.
  6. Check A/C High Pressure Switch Input To PCM Ensure scan tool is connected. Start engine and let idle. Access ACP PID. If scan tool displays ACP PID as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display ACP PID as CLOSED, perform the following as indicated: Models Equipped With Constant Control Relay Module (CCRM) Go to TESTING and perform step 80) in «CONSTANT CONTROL RELAY MODULE (CCRM)»(ref-51262-S26817041232001011600000) .
  7. Check A/C High Pressure Switch With engine running at idle, disconnect A/C high pressure switch. View ACP PID on scan tool. If scan tool displays ACP PID still CLOSED, go to TESTING and perform step 135) in «CONSTANT CONTROL RELAY MODULE (CCRM)»(ref-51262-S26817041232001011600000) . If scan tool does not display ACP PID as CLOSED, check for faulty A/C high pressure switch or overcharged A/C system. Repair as necessary.

PRELIMINARY CHECKS

  1. Perform QUICK TEST to retrieve any cooling fan related DTCs. During QUICK TEST, 3 types of DTCs are retrieved: KOEO, KOER and Continuous Memory DTCs. See «G - TESTS W/ CODES - 3.0L»(ref-24094) or «G - TESTS W/ CODES - 3.4L»(ref-24095) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
  2. If any cooling fan related DTCs are present, identify DTC and go to appropriate step. See appropriate DTC DIRECTORY table. If no DTCs are present, connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC).
  3. Turn ignition on. Access OUTPUT TEST MODE on scan tool. Command cooling fan on and check fan operation. On models with 2 fan speeds, check both fan speeds. On all models, if fan does not operate properly, perform appropriate test. See «TROUBLE SHOOTING DIRECTORY»(ref-51262-S23826726522001011600000) table.
