Principles of Operation

Note. The liftgate must be closed for correct operation of the parking aid system.

With the ignition switch in the RUN position, the parking aid module detects objects behind the vehicle when the REVERSE (R) gear is selected. The parking aid module calculates the distance to an object within the azimuth field by the use of a radar sensor mounted in the rear bumper. The azimuth field is a 170 degree semicircular area emitted around the rear of the vehicle.

  1. At speeds under 4 km/h (2.5 mph), the system reports multiple beeps at ranges of up to 2.6 m (9 ft) A solid tone will be reported if an object is within approximately 0.5m (1.5ft).
  2. At speeds between (2.5-5 mph), the system reports objects up to 5 m (16 ft).
  3. At speeds above 8 km/h (5 mph), the system reports objects up to 5 m (16 ft) and reports a fast beep alarm indicating time to collision is less than 1.5 seconds.
  4. The system is not effective at speeds greater than 10 km/h (6 mph) and may not detect certain angular or moving objects.

The parking aid system is disabled if any fault is detected, and the message center indicates the parking aid is disabled. The parking aid system is also disabled when the operator selects parking aid disable through the message center. The parking aid system remains disabled until either the ignition key is cycled from OFF to RUN, or parking aid enable is selected through the message center.

The parking aid module communicates with the scan tool, the smart junction box (SJB) and the instrument cluster. The following chart describes network messages used by the parking aid module

Note. Both the medium speed controller area network (MS-CAN) and high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) are used for intermodule communication. A gateway message is transferred from one network to another network through the instrument cluster. Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .

PARKING AID MODULE NETWORK COMMUNICATION MESSAGES

Normal Operation

The parking aid system is disabled if any fault is detected, and the message center indicates the parking aid is disabled. The parking aid system may also be disabled when the operator selects parking aid disable through the message center. The parking aid system remains disabled until the fault is corrected, the ignition key is cycled from OFF to RUN (if previously disabled through the message center) or parking aid enable is selected through the message center. The parking aid module communicates with the scan tool, the smart junction box (SJB) and the instrument cluster on the medium speed controller area (MS-CAN) network.

  1. A1 VERIFY THE PARKING AID MODULE COMMUNICATES WITH THE SCAN TOOL Key in ON position. Carry out the network test. Does the parking aid module communicate with the scan tool? YES : Go to A2 . NO : REFER to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-270934) .
  2. A2 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE PARKING AID MODULE ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST Retrieve the DTCs from the parking aid module on-demand self-test. Are any DTCs recorded? YES : REFER to «PARKING AID MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHART»(ref-270967-S07065986492007111500000) . NO : Go to A3 .
  3. A3 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER DISPLAY Observe the message center. Does the message center display PARK AID OFF? YES : ENABLE parking aid in the message center. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : Go to A4 .
  4. A4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PARKING AID MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the parking aid module connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the parking aid module connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new parking aid module. REFER to «Parking Aid Module - Explorer»(ref-270967-S39191467972007110700000) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

Voltage is supplied to the parking aid module on circuit CBP35 (YE/GY) while circuit GD133 (BK) provides ground.

DTC B1318 - is a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets if available voltage to the parking aid module drops below 8 volts for 3 or more seconds.

Possible Causes

  1. Charging system concern
  2. Circuit CBP35 (YE/GY) high resistance
  3. Circuit GD133 (BK) high resistance

With the ignition switch in the RUN position and the REVERSE (R) gear is selected, the parking aid system calculates the distance to an object by the use of a radar sensor. A 750 Hz variable warning tone is generated by the parking aid speaker.

The parking aid speaker tone is controlled by the parking aid module through circuit CMP09 (BN/BU) and is grounded through circuit RMP09 (BU/GN). The parking aid speaker is located in the driver D-pillar area.

DTC C1742 - is a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets if the parking aid module detects a short to ground or open on the rear speaker circuit CMP09 (BN/BU) when the vehicle is in REVERSE (R) and a detectable object is within the azimuth field.

DTC C1743 - is a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets if the parking aid module detects a short to voltage on the rear speaker circuit CMP09 (BN/BU) when the vehicle is in REVERSE (R) and a detectable object is within the azimuth field.

Possible Causes

  1. Circuit CMP09 (BN/BU) open, short to ground or voltage
  2. Circuit RMP09 (BU/GN) open
  3. Parking aid speaker
  4. Parking aid module

The parking aid module receives the PRNDL state from the instrument cluster as a gateway message from the powertrain control module (PCM) or the transmission control module (TCM).

DTC U2471 - is a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets when the parking aid module receives an unknown PRNDL state message from the instrument cluster.

Possible Causes

  1. Instrument cluster
  2. Networked data fault

The parking aid module receives the PRNDL state from the smart junction box (SJB) as a network message.

DTC U2472 - is a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets when the parking aid module receives an unknown ignition switch state message.

Possible Causes

  1. SJB
  2. Networked data fault

The parking aid module receives the vehicle speed from the instrument cluster as a gateway message from the powertrain control module (PCM).

DTC U2473 - is a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets when the parking aid module receives an unknown vehicle speed message.

Possible Causes

  1. Instrument cluster fault
  2. Networked data fault

With the ignition switch in the RUN position and the REVERSE (R) gear is selected, the parking aid system calculates the distance to an object by the use of a radar sensor. A 750 Hz variable warning tone is generated by the parking aid speaker. The speaker increases its warning tone rate as the vehicle gets closer to an obstacle. When an object is detected within 46 cm (18 in) of the vehicle, the warning tone becomes continuous.

Possible Causes

  1. Rear bumper cover impact damage, alignment or obstruction concerns
  2. Parking aid module

The parking aid system detects objects behind the vehicle when the REVERSE (R) gear is selected. The parking aid module calculates the distance to an object by the use of 4 ultrasonic sensors mounted in the rear bumper. The parking aid module does this by calculating the distance to an object within the 170 degree semicircular azimuth area around the rear of the vehicle.

The parking aid sensors detect objects approximately 1.8 m (5.9 ft) from the rear of the vehicle, 50 cm (1.6 ft) from the rear side of the vehicle, and 16 cm (6 in) above the ground. A 750 Hz variable warning tone is generated from a parking aid speaker attached to the parking aid module. The parking aid speaker increases its warning tone rate as the vehicle gets closer to an obstacle. When an object is detected within 25 cm (10 in) of the sensors, the warning tone becomes continuous.

The parking aid system is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the REVERSE (R) gear is selected. The parking aid system is disabled if a fault is detected in 1 of the 4 sensors, the parking aid speaker, or the parking aid module. This is indicated by the parking aid disabled warning in the message center. The parking aid module is on the medium speed controller area network (MS-CAN) and can be diagnosed with a scan tool.

The parking aid system is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the REVERSE (R) gear is selected. The parking aid module receives reverse gear input from the instrument cluster through the medium speed controller area network (MS-CAN). Voltage is supplied to the parking aid sensors from the parking aid module on circuit LMP07 (BU/WH). The parking aid module supplies ground to the parking aid sensors on circuit RMP07 (GN/WH). The parking aid module receives a signal from the parking aid sensors on circuits VMP14 (WH/OG), VMP15 (YE/GN), VMP16 (YE/GY) and VMP17 (YE/OG). The system can be disabled through the message center which is part of the instrument cluster.

Possible Causes

  1. Rear bumper cover
  2. Parking aid sensors alignment
  3. Parking aid module
CAUTIONUse the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. H1 CHECK THE DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PARKING AID MODULE SELF-TESTS Check the parking aid module DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests. Are any parking aid module DTCs recorded? YES : REFER to «PARKING AID MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHART»(ref-270967-S07065986492007111500000) . NO : Go to H2 .
  2. H2 CHECK THE PARKING AID SENSORS FOR CORRECT ALIGNMENT NOTE: If the vehicle was in a rear end collision, the parking aid sensors may not be aligned correctly. Check the bumper for correct alignment. Carry out the azimuth system check. Refer to «Azimuth System Check»(ref-270967-S09516824632007110700000) . Carry out the elevation system check. Refer to «Elevation System Check»(ref-270967-S27663266822007110700000) . Does the parking aid system pass both system checks? YES : Go to H3 . NO : REALIGN or INSTALL a new bumper cover. REFER to «BUMPERS»(ref-270925) . If the vehicle was in a rear end collision, further body work may be required to bring the parking aid sensors into correct alignment.
  3. H3 CHECK THE PARKING AID MODULE REVERSE INDICATION PID Apply the parking brake. Key in ON position. Select REVERSE. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Parking Aid Module PID Monitor the parking aid module TRANSGR PID. Does the PID indicate YES (transmission in reverse)? YES : Go to H4 . NO : INSTALL a new parking aid module. REFER to «Parking Aid Module - Mountaineer, Explorer Sport Trac»(ref-270967-S36451289582007110700000) .
  4. H4 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER FOR PARKING AID DISABLE SWITCH OPERATION While observing the instrument cluster message center, disable and enable the parking aid system. Does the message center display PARKING AID OFF when the parking aid system is disabled, and display PARKING AID ON when the parking aid system is activated? YES : Go to H5 . NO : REFER to «INFORMATION AND MESSAGE CENTER»(ref-270966) .
  5. H5 CHECK FOR CORRECT PARKING AID MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the parking aid module connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the parking aid module connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new parking aid module. REFER to «Parking Aid Module - Mountaineer, Explorer Sport Trac»(ref-270967-S36451289582007110700000) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

Voltage is supplied to the parking aid sensors from the parking aid module on circuit LMP07 (BU/WH). The parking aid module supplies ground to the parking aid sensors on circuit RMP07 (GN/WH). The parking aid module receives a signal from the parking aid sensors on circuits VMP14 (WH/OG), VMP15 (YE/GN), VMP16 (YE/GY) and VMP17 (YE/OG).

DTC C1700 - sets when any of the left rear parking aid sensor circuits are open or the sensor signal line is shorted to ground.

DTC C1703 - sets when any of the right rear parking aid sensor circuits are open or the sensor signal line is shorted to ground.

DTC C1706 - sets when any of the left rear center parking aid sensor circuits are open or the sensor signal line is shorted to ground.

DTC C1709 - sets when any of the right rear center parking aid sensor circuits are open or the sensor signal line is shorted to ground.

Possible Causes

  1. Circuit LMP07 (BU/WH) open
  2. Circuit RMP07 (GN/WH) open
  3. Circuit VMP14 (WH/OG) open or short to ground
  4. Circuit VMP15 (YE/GN) open or short to ground
  5. Circuit VMP16 (YE/GY) open or short to ground
  6. Circuit VMP17 (YE/OG) open or short to ground
  7. Parking aid sensor(s)
  8. Parking aid bumper harness

  1. I1 RETRIEVE THE DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PARKING AID MODULE SELF-TESTS Check the parking aid module DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests. Are multiple DTCs recorded? YES : Go to I2 . NO : For DTCs C1700, C1703, C1706 or C1709, go to I3 . For all other DTCs, REFER to «PARKING AID MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHART»(ref-270967-S07065986492007111500000) .
  2. I2 CHECK THE BUMPER WIRING HARNESS Inspect the bumper wiring harness for opens, shorts, grounds, or corrosion. Is the bumper wiring harness OK? YES : Go to I3 . NO : REPAIR or INSTALL a new bumper wiring harness. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. I3 CHECK THE SENSOR CIRCUITRY FOR OPENS Key in OFF position. I4 CHECK THE SENSOR CIRCUITRY FOR SHORTS TO GROUND Measure the resistance between the suspect parking aid sensor, harness side and ground as follows: DTC Rear Sensor Connector-Pin Circuit C1700 LH outer C4009-2 VMP15 (YE/GN) C1703 RH outer C4011-2 VMP17 (YE/OG) C1706 LH inner C4010-2 VMP14 (WH/OG) C1709 RH inner C4012-2 VMP16 (YE/GY) Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : If all of the parking aid sensors recorded DTCs, go to I5 . If one or more parking aid sensor(s) recorded DTCs, INSTALL a new sensor(s) for the one in question. REFER to «Parking Aid Sensor - Mountaineer, Explorer Sport Trac»(ref-270967-S25351592102007110700000) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. NO : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. I5 CHECK FOR CORRECT PARKING AID MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the parking aid module connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the parking aid module connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new parking aid module. REFER to «Parking Aid Module - Mountaineer, Explorer Sport Trac»(ref-270967-S36451289582007110700000) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

Voltage is supplied to the parking aid sensors from the parking aid module on circuit LMP07 (BU/WH). The parking aid module supplies ground to the parking aid sensors on circuit RMP07 (GN/WH). The parking aid module receives a signal from the parking aid sensors on circuits VMP14 (WH/OG), VMP15 (YE/GN), VMP16 (YE/GY) and VMP17 (YE/OG).

DTC C1699 - sets when the left rear parking aid sensor signal line is shorted to voltage.

DTC C1702 - sets when the right rear parking aid sensor signal line is shorted to voltage.

DTC C1705 - sets when the left rear center parking aid sensor signal line is shorted to voltage.

DTC C1708 - sets when the right rear center parking aid sensor signal line is shorted to voltage.

Possible Causes

  1. Circuit VMP14 (WH/OG) short to voltage
  2. Circuit VMP15 (YE/GN) short to voltage
  3. Circuit VMP16 (YE/GY) short to voltage
  4. Circuit VMP17 (YE/OG) short to voltage
  5. Parking aid sensor(s)
  6. Parking aid bumper harness
  7. Parking aid module

The parking aid system is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the REVERSE (R) gear is selected. The parking aid module calculates the distance to an object by the use of 4 ultrasonic sensors mounted in the rear bumper. The parking aid sensors can detect obstructions in the path behind the vehicle.

DTC C1701 - sets when the left rear parking aid sensor has internally failed or has an incorrect attenuation time.

DTC C1704 - sets when the right rear parking aid sensor has internally failed or has an incorrect attenuation time.

DTC C1707 - sets when the left rear center parking aid sensor has internally failed or has an incorrect attenuation time.

DTC C1710 - sets when the right rear center parking aid sensor has internally failed or has an incorrect attenuation time.

  1. Dirty or obstructed parking aid sensor
  2. Parking aid sensor
  3. Parking aid bumper harness
  4. Parking aid module

Voltage is supplied to the parking aid sensors from the parking aid module on circuit LMP07 (BU/WH). The parking aid module supplies ground to the parking aid sensors on circuit RMP07 (GN/WH).

DTC B1299 - sets when the sensor power supply circuit is shorted to ground or to circuit RMP07 (GN/WH).

Possible Causes

  1. Circuit LMP07 (BU/WH) short to ground
  2. Circuit LMP07 (BU/WH) short to circuit RMP07 (GN/WH)
  3. Parking aid sensor(s)
  4. Parking aid bumper harness
  5. Parking aid module

DTC C1742 - sets when the sounder circuit is open or shorted to ground.

DTC C1743 - sets when the sounder circuit is shorted to voltage.

  1. Circuit CMP09 (BN/BU) open, short to ground or voltage
  2. Circuit RMP09 (BU/GN) open, short to ground or voltage
  3. Parking aid module
  4. Parking aid speaker
