REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
CAUTIONDo not remove steering column, steering wheel and air bag module as an assembly from vehicle unless column is locked to prevent rotation, or lower end of steering shaft is wired in such a way to prevent steering wheel from rotating.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-96386-S09428863992001041000000) . Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition lock cylinder to LOCK position. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-96386-S10816390212001041000000) .
  2. Disconnect contact assembly wire connector from column harness. If contact assembly is to be reused, tape contact assembly before removing to prevent rotation. Remove contact assembly by depressing retaining tangs with screwdriver.

Installation

  1. Center new contact assembly before installation. (Схема №1)and (Схема №2). Hold contact in hand and rotate inner rotor against outer rotor counterclockwise until it stops. Rotate inner rotor clockwise about 2 3/4 turns until alignment marks are aligned and locking tab is in slot.
  2. Install new contact assembly. Ensure retaining tangs lock into position. Remove locking tab. If reinstalling original contact, remove tape after installing. Connect contact assembly wire connector into column harness. Install upper and lower shrouds.
  3. Install steering wheel. Connect contact assembly wire connector into terminal on air bag module. Install air bag module. Connect battery cables. Check AIR BAG light for system faults.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-96386-S09428863992001041000000) .
  2. Remove air bag module and disconnect clockspring electrical connector from module. Remove bolt and vibration damper (if equipped), and reinstall bolt loosely.
  3. Use steering wheel puller to loosen steering wheel from steering shaft. Remove steering wheel bolt. Remove steering wheel.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Check AIR BAG light for system faults.

  1. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  2. Disconnect electrical connectors from switch. Remove multifunction switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Remove lower shroud.
  2. Remove two screws. Disconnect electrical connector. Remove ignition switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove steering column lower shroud. Remove passive anti-theft system transceiver (PATS) wire harness connector. Remove PATS. Turn ignition key to ACCESSORY position. Depress lock cylinder retainer. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder. To install, reverse removal procedure.

WARNINGAfter battery ground cable has been disconnected wait at least two minutes before proceeding to avoid possibility of accidentally deploying air bags.
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. On all models except Cougar, open stowage tray to access two upper retaining bolts. Remove driver side instrument panel. Center steering wheel. Lock in position, remove ignition key.
  2. Remove steering column lower shroud. Remove steering column upper shroud. Disconnect steering column shaft from flexible coupling. Rotate clamp plate to disengage.
  3. Disconnect electrical connectors on right-hand side of steering column. Disconnect electrical connectors on left-hand side of steering column. On Cougar, disconnect air bag control module. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-96386-S09428863992001041000000) .
  4. Unclip wiring harness. Remove 4 steering column retaining bolts. Slide steering column outwards to disengage retaining tab.
WARNINGInstall a new pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

To install, reverse removal procedures. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Connect negative battery cable. Check AIR BAG light system for faults.
