REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Removal & Installation (2.0L)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove 4 intake air resonator bolts and clamp. Raise resonator and disconnect vacuum line. Remove resonator. On 1999 models, detach coolant hose from retaining clip and position to one side. On 2000 models, disconnect fuel supply hoses. On all models, disconnect wiring from generator. Disconnect ground strap from engine lift bracket, near fuel pressure regulator. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove right front wheel. Remove right wheel housing splash shield. Remove accessory drive belt. Remove lower generator bolts. Lower vehicle. Remove upper generator bolt. Remove generator from top, taking care not to overstress hoses and cables. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. Removal & Installation (2.5L)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove radiator splash shield. Remove right front wheel. Remove right wheel housing splash shield. Remove accessory drive belt. Loosen right outer tie rod end nut. Using suitable tie rod end separator, separate tie rod end from steering knuckle. Remove nut, and lift tie rod end from steering knuckle.
  2. Disconnect wiring from generator. Remove generator rear support bracket bolt from generator. Remove upper generator bolt, then lower generator bolt. Remove generator through wheel housing. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-628-S14211603052000030800000) .

Remove generator. See GENERATOR . Remove 4 regulator retaining screws. Remove regulator. To install, reverse removal procedure. New regulators are supplied with retaining pin to hold brushes during installation. After installation, remove retaining pin.
