Torque Converter Engagement
| CAUTION | DO NOT depress TCC switch with transaxle in gear and vehicle at a stop. Damage to TCC may result. |
Accelerate and upshift vehicle into 3rd gear. Maintain constant speed and depress TCC switch. Torque converter clutch should engage and engine RPM should decrease.
TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID
Note. DTC P0741 may be set due to blown pump body gasket. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING in FORD CD4E (MAZDA LA4A-EL) OVERHAUL article for non-electronic symptom diagnostics.
- Electronic Diagnostics Ensure transaxle harness connector is in acceptable condition. Repair as necessary. Ensure transaxle harness connector is fully seated. Connect NGS tester or equivalent to DLC. Perform KOEO self-test until continuous memory codes have been displayed. See «QUICK TEST»(ref-11799-S11142846412000112900000) under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Enter output test mode. See «ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS»(ref-11799-S28356216462000112900000) under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Select ALL ON mode. Push START to turn outputs on. Push STOP to outputs off. If vehicle enters output test mode, go to next step. If vehicle will not enter output test mode, see «SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE»(ref-11799-S40834270782000112900000) under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
- Check Electrical Signal Operation Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Inspect condition of connector and repair as necessary. Using DVOM, connect positive lead to transaxle harness connector terminal No. 1 and negative lead to terminal No. 7. (Схема №8) Turn ignition on. While monitoring DVOM, press START and STOP to cycle solenoid output on and off. If voltage changes at least.5 volt, go to step 5. If voltage does not change, go to next step.
- Check Continuity Of Solenoid Signal And VPWR Circuits Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector, and inspect for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. On 2.0L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 99 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 7. On 2.5L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 80 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 7. (Схема №8) On all models, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pins No. 71 and 97, and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 1. If any resistance reading is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-11799-S38968089322000112900000). Connect all components. Disconnect breakout box and repeat «QUICK TEST»(ref-11799-S11142846412000112900000) under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If each resistance reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.
- Check Solenoid/Harness For Shorts To Power And Ground On 2.0L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 99 and test pins No. 71 and 97. On 2.5L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 80 and test pins No. 71 and 97. On 2.0L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 99 and test pins No. 24, 51, 77, 91, 103 and chassis ground. On 2.5L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 80 and test pins No. 24, 51, 77, 91, 103 and chassis ground. On all models, if any resistance reading is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short circuit. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-11799-S38968089322000112900000). Connect all components. Disconnect breakout box and repeat «QUICK TEST»(ref-11799-S11142846412000112900000) under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If each resistance reading is 10 k/ohms or more, go to next step.
- Transaxle Functional Test Connect transaxle tester. Perform TCC solenoid functional test. See tester instructions. If solenoid activates (Green LED on), go to next step. If solenoid does not activate LED, go to step 7.
- Transaxle Drive Cycle Test Connect PCM 104-pin connector. Perform tester drive test. See tester instructions. If engine RPM decreases when operated with tester, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE to diagnose PCM and wiring harness. If engine RPM does not decrease when operated by tester, go to next step.
- Check Resistance Of Solenoid/Harness Set tester Bench/Drive switch to BENCH position. Set solenoid selector switch to OHMS CHECK. Connect ohmmeter negative lead to TCC sensor jack and positive lead to VPWR jack on tester. Measure resistance. Resistance should be 12.5-19 ohms. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace solenoid body assembly. Clear DTCs. See «CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-11799-S28690799392000112900000) under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Repeat «QUICK TEST»(ref-11799-S11142846412000112900000) under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
- Check Solenoid/Harness For Short To Ground Check continuity between BAT (-) tester jack and TCC sensor jacks. If continuity exists, replace solenoid body assembly. Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See «CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-11799-S28690799392000112900000) under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Repeat «QUICK TEST»(ref-11799-S11142846412000112900000) under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If continuity does not exist, clear DTCs. See «CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-11799-S28690799392000112900000). Repeat «QUICK TEST»(ref-11799-S11142846412000112900000). See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING in FORD CD4E (MAZDA LA4A-EL) OVERHAUL article for non-electronic symptom diagnostics.
