Headlight Doors - Automatic Mercury Capri III

Headlight Doors 5 illustrations ~1127 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Headlight assembly is mounted on a bracket that is raised and lowered by an electric motor. Headlight assemblies raise automatically when headlights are turned on and lower, after a slight delay, when headlights are turned off.

Headlight motor switch, located on console, is used to raise and lower headlights without turning them on. This switch allows service of headlights and can be used to prevent lights from freezing closed in winter climates.

A manual control knob, located under a rubber boot, is provided at rear of each headlight. These knobs allow each motor to be manually operated if no electrical power is available.

Note. DO NOT raise or lower headlights manually if electrical power is available.

Headlight linkage and assembly is preset at factory to meet clearance requirement between turn signal light and headlight. If linkage needs adjustment, headlight carrier hinges and motor carrier assembly must be replaced with linkage.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Visually inspect for damaged mechanical components and headlight door blockage.

Visually inspect electrical components for

  1. Blown Fuses
  2. Damage To Wiring Harness
  3. Loose Or Corroded Connectors
  4. Blown Bulbs
  5. Motor Arm Blockage

Shake wiring harness. Look for obvious signs of shorts, opens or damage.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery.

Control module is located in center of instrument panel below radio. Manufacturer gives no removal and installation procedure.

  1. Raise headlights to normal operating position by turning headlight motor switch on. Remove 4 screws and washers retaining outer bezel enclosing entire headlight assembly and remove bezel. Remove 4 headlight retainer screws. Remove headlight and unplug connector. NOTE: DO NOT disturb headlight adjusting screws.
  2. Remove windshield washer reservoir or coolant reservoir, depending on which headlight assembly requires service. Remove 4 screws and cover from headlight assembly. CAUTION: Headlight assembly cover is painted to match body color. Use care to prevent damage during removal and installation.
  3. Remove 4 bolts retaining headlight assembly to body. Unplug connector from motor and remove headlight assembly. For installation, reverse removal procedure and check operation and aim of headlights.
CAUTIONDO NOT adjust linkage to motor.

Remove headlight assembly. See HEADLIGHT DOOR ASSEMBLY . Remove nut retaining linkage to motor. Remove 3 retaining bolts and motor. When installing, tighten 3 retaining bolts to 27-44 INCH lbs. (3-5 N.m). When connecting linkage, tighten nut to 71-89 INCH lbs. (8-10 N.m). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure and check operation and aim of headlights.

CAUTIONDO NOT adjust linkage to motor.

CONTROL MODULE CIRCUIT FUNCTION

Pinpoint Test C1 - Check Fuse

In main fuse panel, check 20-amp HLM fuse. If fuse is okay, go to test C4. If fuse is not okay, go to test C2.

Pinpoint Test C2 - Check System

Replace 20-amp HLM fuse. If fuse fails again, go to test C3. If fuse does not fail, go to test C4.

Pinpoint Test C3 - Check For Short To Ground

With key off, disconnect headlight lift switch, electronic radio and headlight control module connectors. Disconnect main fuse panel connector. Measure resistance between White/Green wire at main fuse panel connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, service the White/Green wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to test C4.

Pinpoint Test C4 - Check Power Supply To Headlight Control Module

Measure voltage on White/Green wire at headlight control module. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to test C5. If voltage is less than 10 volts, service White/Green wire.

Pinpoint Test C5 - Check Wires To Headlight Control Module

With headlights on, measure and note voltage on Red/Black wire at headlight control module. With high beams on, measure and note voltage on Red/White wire at headlight control module. If voltage is greater than 10 volts in either case, go to test C6. If voltage is less than 10 volts in either case, service wire(s) in question.

Pinpoint Test C6 - Check Headlight Control Module Ground

With ignition off, measure resistance between Black wire at headlight control module and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to test C7. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, service Black wire.

Pinpoint Test C7 - Check Wires To Motor (LH)

Measure resistance of Brown, Red, Black, White and Green wires between headlight control module and left headlight door motor. If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to test C8. If resistance(s) are more than 5 ohms, service wire(s) in question.

Pinpoint Test C8 - Check Wires To Motor (RH)

Measure resistance of Brown, Red, Black, White and Green wires between headlight control module and RH headlight door motor. If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to test C9. If resistance(s) are more than 5 ohms, service wire(s) in question.

Pinpoint Test C9 - Check Headlight Door Motor

With headlights off, apply 12 volts to Brown wire at headlight door motor connector. Ground Green wire at headlight door motor connector. Headlight door should open. Reverse connections. The door should close. If headlight door opens and closes, go to test C10. If headlight door does not open and close, replace headlight door motor(s).

Pinpoint Test C10 - Check Power Supply To headlight Lift Switch

Measure voltage on White/Green wire at headlight lift switch. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to test C11. If voltage is less than 10 volts, service White/Green wire.

Pinpoint Test C11 - Check Wire Between Headlight Lift Switch And Headlight Control Module

With Ignition off, measure resistance of White wire between headlight lift switch and headlight control module. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to test C12. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, service White wire.

Pinpoint Test C12 - Check Headlight Lift Switch

With ignition off, disconnect and remove headlight lift switch. With headlight lift switch on, measure resistance between White/Green wire terminal and White wire terminal at headlight lift switch. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to test C13. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace headlight lift switch. With headlight lift switch off, measure resistance between White/Green wire terminal and White wire terminal at headlight lift switch. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to test C13. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, replace headlight lift switch.

Pinpoint Test C13 - Check Headlight Control Module

Turn headlights on. If headlight doors open, return to TROUBLE SHOOTING and test C1. If headlight doors DO NOT open, replace headlight control module. Turn headlights OFF. If headlight doors close, return to TROUBLE SHOOTING and test C1. If headlight doors DO NOT close, replace headlight control module.
