AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION APPLICATION
SERVICE INTERVALS
Check fluid level at every engine oil change. Fluid, filter changes and band adjustments are not required under normal operation. Under severe service operating conditions, change fluid every 30 months or 30,000 miles. Adjust band when fluid is changed.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
With transmission at normal operating temperature, place vehicle on level surface. Apply parking brake and run engine at idle. Run gearshift lever through all positions, ending in Park. Fluid level should be between "F" and "L" marks. DO NOT overfill.
RECOMMENDED FLUID
On Capri, use MERCON ATF.
FLUID CAPACITIES
Note. Capacities given are approximate refill amounts that apply to overhaul situation. Correct fluid level should be determined by mark on dipstick.

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES
DRAINING & REFILLING
- Remove undercover and side cover to gain access to transaxle oil pan. Remove drain plug and drain fluid. Remove oil pan and discard gasket. Clean filter screen. Replace screen if necessary. On Capri, tighten screen bolts to 69-95 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). CAUTION: DO NOT use any type of gasket sealer or RTV on oil pan gasket.
- Install oil pan bolts. On Capri, tighten bolts to 69-95 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Install drain plug with new washer. Tighten plug to 29-40 ft. lbs. (39-54 N.m). Install undercover and side cover. Add about 3 qts. of ATF. DO NOT overfill. Run engine and check fluid level.
NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH
Combination neutral safety and back-up light switch is screwed into transaxle case. No adjustments are necessary.
SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
| CAUTION | After completing linkage adjustments, be sure neutral safety switch operates properly. With parking brake and service brakes applied, try to start engine in each gear position. Engine must crank only when gearshift lever is in Neutral and Park positions. Adjust if necessary. |
Scheme 58
- Place shift lever in Neutral position. Remove spring clip and pin attaching shift cable trunnion to transaxle shift lever. Rotate transaxle shift lever fully counterclockwise to Park position. Then rotate transaxle shift lever clockwise 2 detents to Neutral position.
- As lever is rotated, position it between ends of shift cable trunnion. If the hole in transaxle shift lever aligns with hole in shift cable trunnion, shift control cable is properly adjusted. If holes do not align, loosen lock nut and unscrew shift knob.
- Raise ashtray receptacle and disconnect wiring. Remove shift quadrant. Loosen adjuster nuts on shift cable. Position shift lever in Park position and check position of detent spring roller. If spring roller is not centered in Park detent, loosen attaching screws and move detent spring forward or backward.
- Install shift quadrant. Place shift lever in Neutral position. Thread adjuster nuts up or down shift cable until holes in transaxle shift lever and shift cable are aligned. (Scheme 58) Tighten adjuster nut to 69-95 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Check alignment of holes in transaxle shift lever and shift cable trunnion to see if adjustment was disturbed while tightening adjuster nuts.
- If spring roller is centered in Park detent, tighten adjuster nut to 69-95 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Check alignment of holes in transaxle shift lever and shift cable trunnion to see if adjustment was disturbed while tightening adjuster nuts.
- If adjustment was not moved, install transaxle shift lever-to-shift cable pin and retaining clip. With shift lever in Neutral position, press shift interlock button and carefully push shift lever forward while an assistant watches transaxle shift lever.
- When transaxle shift lever begins to move, note amount shift lever has moved. With shift lever in Neutral position, press shift interlock button and carefully pull shift lever rearward while an assistant watches transaxle shift lever. When transaxle shift lever begins to move, note amount shift lever has moved.
- If forward and rearward movements of shift lever are not equal, turn adjuster nuts slightly until forward and rearward movements are the same. Tighten adjuster nut to 69-95 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Position and install console. Install shift control knob.
KICKDOWN CABLE
- Remove splash shield next to left front tire. Remove square head plug, marked "L". Install Transmission Test Adapter (D87C-77000-A) and Pressure Gauge (T57L-77820-A). Turn kickdown cable lock nuts as far as they will go, away from throttle cam, to loosen cable completely.
- Shift transaxle into park position, start and warm engine. With engine on, turn lock nuts toward throttle cam until line pressure begins to go beyond 63-66 psi. (4.4-4.6 kg/cm 2 ). Turn lock nuts away from throttle cam until line pressure reaches 63-66 psi (4.4-4.6 kg/cm 2 ).
- Tighten lock nuts and stop engine. Install square head plug and tighten to 43-87 INCH lbs. (5-10 N.m).
