Engine torque requests, general points

The torque interface in the ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) coordinates and sets priorities for the requirements of all systems (according to driveability and priority setting), which determine engine torque requirement.

It also determines how dynamically each requirement is to be implemented.

The following systems can make an engine torque request

  1. Driver, through the accelerator pedal sensor (B37)
  2. Transmission control, through the electric controller unit (VGS) (Y3/8)
  3. Electronic Stability Program (ESP), through the ESP control unit (N47-5)
  4. Cruise control or Distronic (if Distronic present), through the ESP control unit
  5. Maximum torque limitation
  6. Maximum engine speed limitation
  7. Maximum vehicle speed limit

Engine torque requests function sequence

According to the requirement dynamics, the ME-SFI control unit varies the engine torque by

  1. Lengthening or shortening the injection time of the injection valves (Y62)
  2. Advance or retard adjustment of the ignition angle of the ignition coils (T1) (this allows very rapid variation of the engine torque)
  3. Combined adaptation of injection time and ignition angle

Torque reserve

If the injection time is increased and the ignition angle is retarded at the same time, the engine torque remains the same at first. However, the engine torque can then be raised very quickly by advancing the ignition angle.

The function (torque interface) coordinates and prioritizes the requirements of all vehicle systems requiring torque. At the same time, the dynamics of the conversion for each requirement are established.

The engine torque is modified as follows

  1. Increase or reduction of injected volume
  2. Early or late adjustment of the ignition angle (rapid)
  3. Combination of both options If the injected volume is increased and the ignition angle simultaneously adjusted to "late", the engine torque first stays the same, but the option is available to rapidly achieve a subsequent torque increase by early adjustment of the ignition angle (torque reserve).

The following functions can require an engine torque

  1. Driver preset
  2. Transmission control/protection
  3. ESP
  4. Cruise control/Distronic
  5. Torque limitation, e.g. during startup
  6. Limitation of engine speed and max. speed
  7. Ancillary assemblies (coolant compressor, generator, power steering pump)
  8. Functions such as idle speed control and deceleration fuel shutoff.
