Scheme 9: Steering Column Function Diagram - Shown On Vehicle Up To 31.5.07

Function requirements

  1. No overvoltage/undervoltage
  2. valid memory block number
  3. Circuit 15R On or driver door open (up to 31.5.07)

Function

The steering column can be adjusted using the steering column adjustment switch (S59). The corresponding adjustment requests are transmitted via the Controller Area Network-Bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B). The driver-side front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1) actuates the steering column adjustment motor group (M20) accordingly.

Function prerequisites

  1. Ignition key withdrawn or
  2. Driver's door opened with terminal 15R or
  3. Driver's door opened with terminal 15C or
  4. Driver's door opened with ignition key out
  5. Function is activated in the instrument cluster (A1)

Function abort

  1. Adjusting the seat position via the left front seat adjustment switch group (S91/2) or
  2. memory request via the left front seat adjustment switch group (S91/2) or
  3. Steering column position adjusted using the steering column adjustment switch (S59)

Easy entry/exit steering column adjustment, function

In order to make it easier to leave the vehicle, the driver's seat and steering column are moved into the entry/exit position (seat moved back by 60 mm and steering column upwards).

Adjustment into the entry/exit position is triggered by the above listed changes in the ignition key position and door contact states. For this the following information is read out and processed by the driver-side seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1) via the interior CAN

The state of the

  1. left front door contact switch (S17/3) sent by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2)

The state of the circuit sent by the

  1. EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
  2. The instrument cluster (A1) sends adjustment parameters
  3. The left front door control unit (N69/1) sends the status of the left front seat adjustment switch group (S91/2)

If all the conditions are met and there are no termination conditions during the actuation, the height adjustment motor, up and down (<>m2) is actuated into the uppermost position via the driver-side front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1)M20m2).

Function of steering column adjustment motor position measurement - GF46.15-P-3000T

MODEL 211.0 /2 with CODE (275a) Memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors)

Function

To measure the position of the steering column, one Hall sensor each is located on the longitudinal adjustment motor, forwards and backwards (M20m1) and on the height adjustment motor, up and down (M20m2).

The signals from the Hall sensors are read in by the driver-side front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1), checked for plausibility and counted in the position counter for position measurement.

The received Hall pulses are evaluated as positive or negative according to the actuation voltage of the motor.

MODEL 211.0 /2 with CODE (275a) Memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors)

Lockup recognition

On the steering column one Hall sensor each is located on the longitudinal adjustment motor, forward and back (M20m1) and on the height adjustment motor, up and down (M20m2). Lockup is recognized if despite a manual adjustment request via the steering column adjustment switch (S59) no change in position of the steering column is detected by the Hall sensors.

Anti-lock device

If the longitudinal adjustment motor, forwards and backwards (M20m1) or height adjustment motor, up and down (M20m2) locks up during an adjustment function triggered via the steering column adjustment switch (S59) or during the adjustment of a stored position, the corresponding motor is switched off after 2.5 seconds.

Switching on again in the same adjustment direction is only permitted after releasing the steering column adjustment switch (S59) for more than 2.5 seconds.

A restart in the opposite direction of adjustment is possible right away.

Adjustment to driving position function - GF46.15-P-3005T

MODEL 211.0 /2 with CODE (275a) Memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors)

Function prerequisites

Turning the transmitter key (A8/1) when driver's door is closed

  1. From position 0 to circuit 15C
  2. or from circuit 15C to circuit 15R
  3. or from circuit 15R to circuit 15

Open and close driver's door with transmitter key (A8/1) in position circuit 15.

Function

After getting into the vehicle, the driver's seat and steering column are moved into the driving position which was last adjusted. The last driving position depends on the current memory block number and is controlled by the driver-side front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1).

The storage block number designates the data record which is stored key-related in the electronic ignition switch control unit (N73)

Abort conditions

All abort conditions are monitored by the driver front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1).

Adjustment to the driving position is not reactivated when the input signal that caused the abort returns to its initial state. This applies to all abort conditions. Only when the activation conditions are satisfied again is adjustment to the driving position reactivated.

Approaching the driving position is aborted if the driver intervenes by operating the left door seat adjustment switch group memory(S91/2).

Abort due to contrary state transitions

Approaching the driving position is aborted by the driver-side front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1), if there is the following change in the status of the transmitter key position and door contact which contradict the triggering conditions

  1. Circuit 15 to circuit 15R
  2. Circuit 15R to circuit 15C
  3. Circuit 15C to any circuit
  4. Driver's door open after driver's door closed with circuit 15 OFF

Repetition safeguard

The alternating insertion and removal of the transmitter key (A8/1) results in an interplay between approaching the entry/exit position and the driving position (with the door open: steering column only; with the door closed: seat and steering column). To prevent this, the number of cycles is limited to 5. The counter is reset when

  1. the transmitter key (A8/1) is turned to circuit 15R or
  2. if the status of the driver's door changes.
