Symptom Troubleshooting (Power Systems): Overview Mazda Tribute II

Principles of Operation

Note. The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

Normal Operation

The ignition switch receives fused battery voltage along circuit (L/R) from smart junction box (SJB) fuse 27 ). The ignition switch then sends that voltage out to various systems depending on ignition switch position. The ignition switch has 4 possible states

  1. OFF - No power on any circuits
  2. ACC - Power on circuit (V/G)
  3. RUN - Power on circuits (V/G) and (W/O)
  4. START - Power on circuits (W/O), (L/W) and (L/BR) Possible Causes
  5. Fuse
  6. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  7. Ignition switch
  8. SJB

When the ignition switch is placed in ACC, fused ignition voltage is sent to smart junction box (SJB) J2280a pin 3, along circuit (V/G).

Possible Causes

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Ignition switch
  3. SJB

When the ignition switch is placed in RUN, fused ignition voltage is sent to

  1. Smart junction box (SJB) J2280a pin 3, along circuit (V/G).
  2. SJB J2280e pin 1, along circuit (W/O).
  3. SJB J2280b pin 45, along circuit (W/O).

  1. Fuse 35 (10A) in the battery junction box (BJB) along circuit (W/O).
  2. Smart junction box (SJB) J2280e pin 1, along circuit (W/O).

  6. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  7. Ignition switch
  8. SJB

The ignition switch is spring loaded to automatically return to the RUN position after being placed in the START position. When the ignition switch is placed in START, fused ignition voltage is sent to

  1. Fuse 35 (10A) in the battery junction box (BJB) along circuit (W/O).
  2. Smart junction box (SJB) J2280e pin 1, along circuit (W/O).
  3. SJB J2280b pin 45, along circuit (W/O).
  4. PCM 0140-175b pin 7, along circuit (L/W).
  5. BJB starter diode along circuit (L/W), then through the diode to: SJB J2280b pin 32, along circuit (L/BR). PCM 0140-175b pin 4, along circuit (L/BR). Transmission range (TR) sensor 0119-03 pin 4, along circuit (L/BR).
  6. DTC B2A20 Ignition Stuck in START - The SJB continuously monitors the ignition switch state, if the SJB detects voltage on circuit (L/W) or (L/BR) for more than 30 seconds, DTC B2A20 will be set. Possible Causes
  7. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  8. Ignition switch
  9. SJB

When placed in ACC, RUN or START, the ignition switch sends voltage out to the smart junction box (SJB). Micro-processors in the SJB continuously monitor the ignition switch state. The ignition switch has 4 possible states

  1. OFF
  2. ACC
  3. RUN
  4. START When the ignition switch is placed in ACC, fused ignition voltage is sent to
  5. SJB J2280a pin 3, along circuit (V/G). When the ignition switch is placed in RUN, fused ignition voltage is sent to
  6. SJB J2280a pin 3, along circuit (V/G).
  7. SJB J2280e pin 1, along circuit (W/O).
  8. SJB J2280b pin 45, along circuit (W/O).
  9. Fuse 35 (10A) in the battery junction box (BJB) along circuit (W/O). When the ignition switch is placed in START, fused ignition voltage is sent to
  10. Fuse 35 (10A) in the BJB along circuit (W/O).
  11. SJB J2280e pin 1, along circuit (W/O).
  12. SJB J2280b pin 45, along circuit (W/O).
  13. PCM 0140-175b pin 7, along circuit (L/W) (except Hybrid).
  14. BJB starter diode along circuit (L/W), then through the diode to: SJB J2280b pin 32, along circuit (L/BR). PCM 0140-175b pin 4, along circuit (L/BR). Transmission range (TR) sensor 0119-03 pin 4, along circuit (L/BR).
  15. DTC B2844 Ignition Fault - If the SJB receives an invalid ignition state or cannot detect the ignition switch state during normal operation, DTC B2844 is set.
  16. DTC U2472 Unexpected Ignition State - If the SJB does not receive the ignition RUN signal, or any ignition switch signal, while carrying out an SJB self-test, DTC U2472 is set. Possible Causes
  17. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  18. Ignition switch
  19. SJB

When the ignition key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder, an internal switch in the ignition switch assembly closes and battery voltage is sent to the smart junction box (SJB) along circuit (L/GY).

When the gear selector is placed in a position other than PARK, the key release interlock actuator (part of the ignition switch assembly) prevents the key from being removed from the ignition switch. The key release interlock actuator receives fused battery voltage from smart junction box (SJB) fuse 27 (20A) along circuit (L/R). Ground for the actuator is provided along circuit (W/BR), through the park detection switch (part of the gear selector assembly) and then along circuit (B/G). When the gear selector lever is placed in a position other than PARK, the park detection switch closes and connects circuit (W/BR) to circuit (B/G), this grounds the key release actuator and prevents the key from being removed from the ignition switch.

  1. DTC B1352 Ignition Key-In Circuit Failure - When the battery voltage is between 10 volts and 15.5 volts and the ignition switch is in the RUN position, if the ignition key is removed from the ignition switch or if there is an open in circuit (L/GY), DTC B1352 will be set. Possible Causes
  2. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  3. Ignition switch
  4. Park detection switch (part of the gear selector lever)
  5. SJB
