Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP)

The CMP sensor

  1. is a variable reluctance sensor.
  2. is mounted in the front cover.
  3. is triggered by the high point mark on the LH exhaust camshaft.
  4. provides camshaft rotational location information to the powertrain control module (PCM).

Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)

The CKP sensor

  1. is a variable reluctance sensor.
  2. is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel mounted on the crankshaft.
  3. provides base timing and crankshaft speed (rpm) to the powertrain control module (PCM).

Ignition Coils

The separate ignition coils

  1. change low voltage signals from the PCM to high voltage pulses.
  2. produce the high voltage pulses to the spark plugs.
  3. are connected directly to each spark plug.

Spark plugs

The spark plugs

  1. change high voltage pulses into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.
  2. originally equipped on the vehicle have a platinum-enhanced active electrode for long life.

  1. Inspect the spark plug for a bridged gap. Check for deposit build-up closing the gap between the electrodes. Deposits are caused by oil or carbon fouling. Clean the spark plug.
  2. Check for oil fouling. Check for wet, black deposits on the insulator shell bore electrodes, caused by excessive oil entering the combustion chamber through worn rings and pistons, excessive valve-to-guide clearance or worn or loose bearings. Correct the oil leak concern. Install a new spark plug.
  3. Inspect for carbon fouling. Look for black, dry, fluffy carbon deposits on the insulator tips, exposed shell surfaces and electrodes, caused by a spark plug with an incorrect heat range, dirty air cleaner, too rich a fuel mixture or excessive idling. Install new spark plugs.
  4. Inspect for normal burning. Check for light tan or gray deposits on the firing tip.
  5. Inspect for pre-ignition, identified by melted electrodes and a possibly damaged insulator. Metallic deposits on the insulator indicate engine damage. This may be caused by incorrect ignition timing, wrong type of fuel or the unauthorized installation of a heli-coil insert in place of the spark plug threads. Install a new spark plug.
  6. Inspect for overheating, identified by a white or light gray spots and with bluish-burnt appearance of electrodes. This is caused by engine overheating, wrong type of fuel, loose spark plugs, spark plugs with an incorrect heat range, low fuel pump pressure or incorrect ignition timing. Install a new spark plug.
  7. Inspect for fused deposits, identified by melted or spotty deposits resembling bubbles or blisters. These are caused by sudden acceleration. Install a new spark plug.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the 4 ignition coil-on-plug electrical connectors.
  3. Remove the 4 ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts.
  4. Remove the 4 ignition coils. NOTE: Use compressed air to remove any foreign material in the spark plug well before removing the spark plugs
  5. Remove the 4 spark plugs.
  6. Use the following table and inspect the spark plugs.
  7. Adjust the spark plug gap as necessary.
  8. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots before attaching to the spark plugs.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. If removing the RH coil-on-plug, remove the upper intake manifold. See «UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-221824-S38983032742006022600000) .
  3. Disconnect the 6 ignition coil-on-plug electrical connectors.
  4. Remove the 6 ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts.
  5. Remove the 6 ignition coils. NOTE: Use compressed air to remove any foreign material in the spark plug well before removing the spark plugs
  6. Remove the 6 spark plugs.
  7. Use the following table and inspect the spark plugs.
  8. Adjust the spark plug gap as necessary.
  9. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots before attaching to the spark plugs.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Tribute (3.0L)

The 3.0L Duratec uses coil-on-plug ignition.

2.3L

Firing order is 1-3-4-2.

3.0L Duratec (4V)

Firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6.
