Removal and Installation

  1. Drain the engine cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221820-S21265484122006022600000) .
  2. Remove the cooling fans. See «COOLING FAN»(ref-221820-S19415775052006022600000) .
  3. Remove the radiator. Loosen the hose clamps, disconnect the hoses and position aside. Remove the radiator.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 1: BYPASS TUBE - 2.3L
  1. Drain the engine Cooling System. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221820-S21265484122006022600000) .
  2. Remove the intake manifold. See «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-221822-S08598664632006022600000) .
  3. Loosen the hose clamps and remove the bypass hose. NOTE: Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 2: THERMOSTAT AND THERMOSTAT HOUSING - 2.3L
  1. Drain the engine coolant. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221820-S21265484122006022600000) .
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER -- 2.3L»(ref-221816-S11035451662006022600000) .
  3. Remove the thermostat and thermostat housing assembly. Loosen the clamps, disconnect the hoses and position aside. Remove the bolts, thermostat housing and the thermostat housing gasket. NOTE: Clean and inspect the thermostat gasket and all sealing surfaces.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Drain the engine cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221820-S21265484122006022600000) .
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT -- 2.3L»(ref-221816-S41124517472006022600000) .
  3. Remove the water pump pulley.
  4. Remove the bolts and the water pump. Remove and discard the water pump O-ring seal. NOTE: Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new O-ring seal.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. Remove the grill assembly. See «BODY PANELS»(ref-221971) .
  3. Position the hood latch out of the way. See «HOOD LATCH»(ref-221981-S23747386402006022600000) .
  4. If equipped, remove the upper radiator tie strap.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle..
  6. Remove the lower center support bolt and the lower fan bolts.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Remove the upper center support nut and the upper center support.
  9. Disconnect the LH fan electrical connector.
  10. Remove the LH and RH upper radiator supports.
  11. Tilt the radiator forward for clearance.
  12. Remove the bolts and the LH cooling fan.
  13. If necessary remove the bolt and disconnect the electrical connector, remove the RH fan.
  14. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 15: CYLINDER BLOCK - CORE PLUG REPLACEMENT
  1. Use a slide hammer or tools suitable to remove the cylinder block core plug.
  2. Inspect the cylinder block plug bore for any damage that would interfere with the correct sealing of the plug. If the cylinder block plug bore is damaged, bore for the next oversize plug. NOTE: Oversize plugs are identified by the OS stamped in the flat located on the cup side of the plug.
  3. Coat the cylinder block core plug and bore lightly with Threadlock 262 and install the cylinder block core plug.

Scheme 16: Cup-Type
CAUTIONUse care during this procedure so as not to disturb or distort the cup sealing surface.
CAUTIONWhen installed, the flanged edge must be below the chamfered edge of the bore to effectively seal the bore.
  1. Use a tool suitable to seat the cup-type cylinder block core plug.

Scheme 17: Expansion-Type
CAUTIONDo not contact the crown when installing an expansion-type cylinder block core plug. This could expand the plug before seating and result in leakage.
  1. Use tool suitable to seat the expansion-type cylinder block core plug.

  1. Drain the cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221820-S21265484122006022600000) .
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Disconnect the block heater power cable from the block heater.
  4. Remove the block heater.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
