Removal
- Remove the timing belt. Refer to «TIMING BELT»(ref-159303-S04091706282005042500000) .
- Use a feeler gauge to measure each valve's clearance and record its location.
- Remove the camshafts. Refer to «CAMSHAFTS»(ref-159303-S40314294172005042500000) .
- Remove the valve tappets from the cylinder head.
- Select tappets and mark installation location.
Installation
Note. Lubricate the valve tappets with SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil.

- Install the valve tappets.
- Install the camshafts. Refer to «CAMSHAFTS»(ref-159303-S40314294172005042500000) .
- Confirm each valve's clearance at base circle with the lobe pointed away from the tappet.
- Install the timing belt. Refer to «TIMING BELT»(ref-159303-S04091706282005042500000) .
- Remove the camshafts. Refer to «CAMSHAFTS»(ref-159303-S40314294172005042500000) .
- Remove the valve tappets from the cylinder head.
- Inspect the valve tappets. Refer to «VALVE TAPPET - INSPECTION»(ref-159303-S08549798642005042500000) .
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the valve tappet with SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil.

- Remove the spark plugs.
- Remove the valve tappets. Refer to «VALVE TAPPETS»(ref-159303-S15015653672005042500000) .
- Install the air line with an adapter in the spark plug hole and turn on the air supply.
- Install the special tools, compress the valve spring, and remove the valve spring retainer and valve spring.
- Inspect the valve spring, valve spring retainer and valve spring retainer key. Install new parts as necessary.
- Use the special tools to remove the valve stem seal.

- Remove the air pressure from the spark plug adapter and inspect the valve for damage. Rotate the valve and check the valve for eccentric movement during rotation.
- If the condition of the valve is satisfactory, apply SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil to the valve stem and hold the valve closed. Apply the air pressure within the cylinder.
- Lubricate valve and guides with SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil and using the special tool install the valve stem seals onto the cylinder head valve guides.
- Place the valve spring in position over the valve and install the valve spring retainer.
- Using the special tools compress the valve spring and install the valve spring retainer keys. Remove the special tools.
- Remove the air pressure.
- Remove the air line adapter.
- Install the valve tappets. Refer to «VALVE TAPPETS»(ref-159303-S15015653672005042500000) .
- Install the spark plugs.

- Remove the bolts and the RH lower splash shield.

- Install the timing belt guide and crankshaft sprocket.

- Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft rear oil seal.
- Inspect the crankshaft rear oil seal area.
Note. Coat the rear oil seal area and the crankshaft rear oil seal lip with SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil.
Note. Make sure the crankshaft rear oil seal is on correctly and that the edges are not rolled over.

- Remove the spark plugs.

- Remove the bolt, nut, and position the coolant tube aside.
- Rotate the crankshaft to just before Top Dead Center (TDC) (No. 1 cylinder).
- Remove the stud.
- Install the special tools.
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise against the peg to bring it to TDC (No. 1 cylinder).
- Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
- Remove the timing belt covers. Refer to «TIMING BELT COVER - UPPER AND LOWER»(ref-159303-S16522057122005042500000) .
- Remove the water pump pulley.
- Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
- Install the special tool and align the camshafts.
- Raise and support the vehicle, Refer to «JACKING & HOISTING»(ref-99217-S42191816352001062900000) .
- Remove the bolts and the engine mount lower bracket.
- Loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley and allow to slide down to the bottom of its travel.
- Slide the timing belt off of the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
- Inspect the timing belt for wear. Install a new belt if necessary.
Note. Make sure the correct (second) notch in the pulley is indexed to the lower cylinder block.

- Slide the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft and confirm the crankshaft position is at TDC (No. 1 cylinder) by rotating it clockwise against the alignment peg. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Confirm that the timing belt tensioner is installed correctly with the tab positioned in the slot in the inner timing cover.
- Install the timing belt onto the timing belt sprockets.
- Adjust the timing belt tensioner. Using a 6mm Allen wrench, rotate the adjuster counterclockwise and align the marks as shown. Tighten the tensioner pulley bolt.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «JACKING & HOISTING»(ref-99217-S42191816352001062900000) .
- Install the front engine mount lower bracket.
- Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
- Install the water pump pulley. Hand tighten the bolts.
- Install the timing belt covers. Refer to «TIMING BELT COVER - UPPER AND LOWER»(ref-159303-S16522057122005042500000) .
- Tighten the water pump pulley bolts.
- Remove the special tool.
- Install the stud.
- Install the coolant tube.
- Install the catalytic converter.
- Remove the special tool.
- Install the valve cover. Refer to «VALVE COVER»(ref-159303-S31682353032005042500000) .
- Install the spark plugs.

- Install the camshaft sprockets onto the camshafts and loosely install the bolts.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «JACKING & HOISTING»(ref-99217-S42191816352001062900000)
- Slide the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft and confirm the crankshaft position is at TDC (No. 1 cylinder) by rotating it clockwise against the alignment peg. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
- Lower the vehicle.

- Tighten the water pump pulley bolts.
- Remove the special tool.
- Install the stud.
- Install the coolant tube.
- Install the catalytic converter.
- Lower the vehicle.

- Using the special tool, install new camshaft front oil seals.

- Remove the camshaft timing sprockets. Refer to «TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS - TIMING SPROCKETS»(ref-159303-S16916911222005042500000) .
- Verify the valve clearance. Refer to «VALVE - VALVE CLEARANCE, ADJUST»(ref-159303-S13379227692005042500000) .
- Remove the camshafts. Loosen the camshaft journal cap bolts in several two-turn passes in the sequence shown. Remove the bolts. Remove the caps.
- Inspect the camshafts for wear. Discard the oil seals.
- Coat the sealing surface of the front camshaft journal cap with silicone.
- Install the camshafts. Position the camshafts and camshaft journal caps. Install the bolts and tighten the bolts in several two-turn passes using the sequence shown.
- Verify the valve clearance. Refer to «VALVE - VALVE CLEARANCE, ADJUST»(ref-159303-S13379227692005042500000) .
- Using the special tool, install new camshaft front oil seals.
- Install the camshaft timing sprockets. Refer to «TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS - TIMING SPROCKETS»(ref-159303-S16916911222005042500000) .

- Remove the ignition coil bracket.
- Remove the thermostat housing.

- Clean all gasket material from the mating surfaces on the cylinder head and cylinder block. Clean out the bolt holes in the cylinder block. Inspect the cylinder head for flatness.
- Install a new head gasket on the cylinder block.
- Install the cylinder head and tighten the bolts in three stages using the sequence shown. Stage 1: Tighten the bolts to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). Stage 2: Tighten the bolts to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Stage 3: Tighten the bolts an additional 90 degrees.
- Install the special tool.
- Remove the engine mount upper bracket.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «JACKING & HOISTING»(ref-99217-S42191816352001062900000).
- Remove the engine mount lower bracket.
- Drain engine oil and replace the oil filter. Fill the crankcase with SAE 5W- 20 Motor Oil.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the valve tappets. Refer to «VALVE TAPPETS»(ref-159303-S15015653672005042500000).
- Position the power steering bracket back.
- Install the exhaust manifold. see scheme 401
- Install the intake manifold. see scheme 402
- Install the PCV tube.
- Install the thermostat housing.
- Install the ignition coil bracket.

- Remove the hood.

- Remove the battery tray.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- Drain the engine coolant.
- Recover the A/C system refrigerant. Refer to «REFRIGERANT RECOVERY/RECYCLING»(ref-98975-S05260558422001060700000) .
- Using the special tool, disconnect the fuel line.
- Disconnect the throttle cables and the cruise control cable (if equipped).
- Disconnect the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) vacuum regulator valve. Disconnect the electrical connector. Disconnect the vacuum hoses.
- Disconnect the brake booster vacuum supply hose.
- Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) wire harness and ground.
- Disconnect the ground wire.
- Disconnect the wire harness connector.
- Disconnect the power distribution box electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the vacuum lines at the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister.
- Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
- Remove the power steering line bracket bolt.
- Remove the power steering line bracket bolt.
- Remove the upper power steering pump bolts.
- Disconnect the coolant hose.
- Disconnect the heater hoses.
- Remove the cruise control unit (if equipped) and position aside.
- Remove the catalytic converter.
- Disconnect the coolant hose.
- Remove the A/C compressor. Refer to «COMPRESSOR»(ref-98830-S41095088572001061500000) .
- Remove the halfshafts. Refer to «REMOVAL, DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION»(ref-89196-S07636175522001022300000) .
- Disconnect the shifter linkages.
- Disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
- Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt.
- Remove the engine to transaxle bolts.
- Disconnect the lower radiator hose.
- Remove the lower power steering pump bolts and position the pump aside.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Disconnect the power steering line brackets and position the lines out of the way.
- Remove the clutch slave cylinder bolts.
- Remove the clutch slave cylinder line from the bracket and position the clutch slave cylinder aside.
- Support the engine using a suitable lifting device.
- Remove the rear transaxle mount.
- Remove the LH transaxle mount.
- Disconnect the ground cable.
- Remove the engine mount upper bracket.
- Install the special tool and suitable lifting device and remove the engine and transaxle as an assembly.
- Disconnect the generator electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors. Disconnect the knock sensor electrical connector. Disconnect the oil pressure sender electrical connector. Disconnect the starter electrical connector.
- Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
- Disconnect the Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch electrical connector and ground wire.
- Disconnect the fuel charging wiring harness electrical connector.
- Disconnect the PCM wire harness from the bracket.
- Disconnect the ground wire.
- Disconnect the backup lamp switch electrical connector.
- Remove the wire harness. Disconnect the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor. Remove the wire harness from the brackets and remove from the engine/transaxle assembly.
- Remove the starter.
- Remove the engine to transaxle bolts.
- Remove the engine to transaxle bolts and remove the transaxle.
- Using the special tool 303-673, lock the flywheel to the engine.
- Remove the bolts, clutch pressure plate and clutch disc.
- Remove the flywheel. Refer to «FLYWHEEL»(ref-159303-S33320579882005042500000) .
- Remove rear cover plates and dowels.
- Mount the engine on a suitable engine stand.
