Scheme 1: Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Visual Inspection Chart Instrument Cluster
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the WDS or equivalent Tester to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the WDS or equivalent Tester menu. If the WDS or equivalent Tester does not communicate with the vehicle: Check that the program card is correctly installed. Check the connections to the vehicle. Check the ignition switch position.
  5. If the WDS or equivalent Tester still does not power up, refer to the WDS or equivalent Tester manual.
  6. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the WDS or equivalent Tester responds with: CKT914, CKT915 OR CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-173500) article. NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for the instrument cluster (IC), go to «PINPOINT TEST 1: NO COMMUNICATION WITH THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER»(ref-154996-S22332394812005030700000) , for the generic electronic module (GEM), refer to «PINPOINT TEST 1: NO COMMUNICATION WITH THE GEM»(ref-173500-S40848950682005031600000) , or for powertrain control module (PCM) refer to «COMMUNICATION ERROR»(ref-150940-S03270032472002112700000) «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-173500) article. SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the self test diagnostics for the instrument cluster or the GEM.
  7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index or the GEM diagnostic trouble code (DTC) index to continue diagnostics.
  8. If no DTCs are related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to the Troubleshooting Index to continue diagnostics.

Self-Diagnostic Mode

To enter the instrument cluster self diagnostic mode with the engine off, depress and hold the trip/odometer reset button. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position and hold until tESt appears in the display area (within five to eight seconds). Once the tESt appears release the trip/odometer reset button within three seconds. Depress the trip/odometer reset button once to advance to each stage of the self-test.

Turn the ignition to the OFF position to exit the instrument cluster Self- Diagnostic Mode. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to the Troubleshooting Index to continue diagnostics.
