MAZDA AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS
SERVICE INTERVALS
Check fluid level every 7500 miles or every 8 months, whichever occurs first. Change fluid every 30,000 miles.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
Park vehicle on level ground. Apply parking brake. Bring engine to normal operating temperature. Briefly place selector lever in all gears and return to "P". Clean dipstick and insert in tube. Remove dipstick. Level should be between "L" and "F" marks. If necessary, add fluid.
Transmission
Use Dexron II ATF.
Transfer Case
Use API GL-4 or 5, SAE 80W-90.

TRANSFER CASE REFILL CAPACITIES
B2200, B2600, RX7 & 929
- Remove oil pan bolts and drain fluid. Discard gasket. If oil strainer is removed for cleaning, tighten retaining bolts to 26-35 INCH lbs. (3-4 N.m).
- Clean oil pan and install with new gasket. Tighten oil pan bolts to 43-61 INCH lbs. (5-7 N.m). Add fluid and check fluid level. DO NOT overfill transmission.
MX-6 & 626
- Remove drain plug on bottom of transaxle case and drain fluid. Remove left side splash shield. Remove oil pan and gasket and note position of magnets. Remove oil strainer and "O" ring.
- Install new "O" ring on oil strainer and apply ATF to "O" ring. Install oil strainer and tighten bolts to 65-95 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Clean oil pan and replace magnets. Install pan and new gasket to transaxle case and tighten bolts to 65-95 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Add required amount of fluid.
B2200 & B2600 (2nd Brake Band)
- Drain ATF and remove oil pan. Loosen lock nut on 2nd gear brake band while holding stem stationary. (Scheme 1) Tighten piston stem to 108-132 INCH lbs. (12-15 N.m).
- Back off piston stem 2 turns on 3-speed models (L3N71B) and 3 turns on 4-speed models (L4N71B). Hold stem and tighten lock nut to 11-29 ft. lbs. (15-39 N.m). Install oil pan and refill transmission.
Note. On RX7, 2nd brake band is adjusted during overhaul.

929
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Loosen oil pan and drain fluid. Remove bracket, oil pan and gasket. Disconnect vacuum hose at vacuum diaphragm (modulator) and remove vacuum diaphragm.
- Disconnect solenoid valve connector and remove harness from bracket. Remove valve body bolts and remove valve body assembly. Loosen lock nut on 2nd gear brake band while holding piston stem stationary.
- Tighten piston stem to 108-126 INCH lbs. (12-14 N.m). Loosen stem 2 1/2 turns while holding stem stationary. Tighten lock nut to 11-29 ft. lbs. (15-39 N.m). Install valve body assembly and tighten bolts to 96-132 INCH lbs. (11-15 N.m).
- Connect solenoid valve connector and install harness. Clean pan and install with new pan gasket. Tighten pan bolts to 43-61 INCH lbs. (5-7 N.m). Install vacuum diaphragm and connect vacuum hose. Connect negative battery cable. Fill with required amount of fluid.
2-4 BRAKE BAND
- Remove drain plug and drain transaxle. Remove oil pan. Loosen 2-4 brake band lock nut while holding piston stem stationary. Tighten piston stem to 78-95 INCH lbs. (9-11 N.m). (Scheme 2)
- Loosen piston stem 2 turns, hold stationary and tighten lock nut to 18-29 ft. lbs. (25-39 N.m). Install oil pan with new gasket and tighten bolts to 65-95 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Add required amount of fluid.

B2600 & RX7
- Remove overdrive brake band servo cover to adjust overdrive brake band. Loosen overdrive brake band lock nut while holding piston stem stationary. (Scheme 1)
- Tighten overdrive brake band servo piston stem to 61-86 INCH lbs. (7-10 N.m). Back off piston stem 2 turns. Hold piston stem in this position and tighten lock nut to 11-29 ft. lbs. (15-39 N.m).
- Remove overdrive band servo cover and gasket. (Scheme 1) Loosen overdrive adjustment screw lock nut while holding adjustment screw from turning. Tighten piston adjustment stem to 104-132 INCH lbs. (12-15 N.m).
- Back off piston adjustment stem 2 turns. While holding stem in this position, tighten lock nut to 11-29 ft. lbs. (15-39 N.m). Install overdrive band servo cover with new gasket. Tighten cover bolts to 43-61 INCH lbs. (5-7 N.m).
B2200 & B2600
Kickdown switch is on upper part of accelerator pedal. Loosen kickdown switch lock nut. Depress accelerator pedal fully. With pedal in this position, adjust switch so its tip is depressed and switch is on. Tighten lock nut.
B2200
- Place gearshift lever in the "P" position. Loosen lock nuts on transmission end of cable. (Scheme 3)
- Ensure transmission lever is in the "Park" position. Holding gearshift lever forward, tighten center lock nut to 69-95 INCH lbs. (7.8-11.0 N.m). Tighten forward lock nut, then rear lock nut to 69-95 INCH lbs. (7.8-11.0 N.m).
- Remove console covering gearshift lever in cab. Move gearshift lever through "N", "D" and "P" positions. Ensure there is clearance between guide pin on bottom of gearshift lever and detent in gearshift lever bracket. Readjust cable if necessary.

B2600
- Remove console covering gearshift lever in cab. Place gearshift lever in the "P" position. Loosen lock nuts at bottom of gearshift lever. (Scheme 4)
- Ensure transmission lever is in the "Park" position. There should be.039" (1.0 mm) clearance between the adjustment lever and front lock nut. After clearance is set, tighten rear lock nut to 69-95 INCH lbs. (7.8-11.0 N.m).
- Move gearshift lever to the "N", "D" and "P" positions. Make sure there is clearance between guide pin on bottom of gearshift lever and detent on gearshift lever bracket. Readjust if necessary.
Scheme 4
- Remove center console and loosen set bolt and both lock nuts "A" and "B" on gearshift assembly. (Scheme 5) Move gearshift lever to the "P" range. Ensure that transaxle lever is in the "P" position. Tighten set bolt to 67-96 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m).
- Turn lock nut "A" by hand until lock nut "A" touches spacer lightly. Tighten lock nut "B" to 67-96 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Check that a click is heard in each range when shifting from the "P" through "L" positions. Ensure that starter will only operate in the "P" and "N" positions.
- Check that position of gearshift lever and indicator correspond with each other. Check that lock button returns after it has been depressed. Ensure that gearshift lever operates smoothly when engaged in all positions. Install center console.
Scheme 5
RX7
- Remove boot plate. Place gearshift lever in the "P" position. From inside passenger compartment, loosen 2 lock nuts on connector link at bottom of gearshift lever. Move transmission lever to the "P" position (first detent to the rear of transmission).
- Tighten front lock nut until it just touches adjustment lever. Back off front lock nut one turn. Tighten rear lock nut to 69-96 INCH lbs. (7.8-11.0 N.m). Place gearshift lever in each position to ensure transmission shifts correctly.
- Move gearshift lever to the "P" position. Loosen lock nuts "A" and "B" and ensure that transmission is in the "P" position. Using a feeler gauge, adjust clearance between the adjustment lever and lock nut "A" to.039" (1.0 mm). (Scheme 6)
- Tighten lock nut "B" to 69-95 INCH lbs. (7.8-11 N.m). Measure clearance between guide plate and guide pin in the "P" position. Repeat procedure in the "N" and "D" positions. Front side clearance should be approximately.039" (1.0 mm) and rear side should be approximately.020" (0.5 mm). (Scheme 7)

THROTTLE CABLE
Note. This procedure requires the use of an oil pressure gauge to properly adjust throttle cable.
- Remove left side splash shield near left front tire. Remove upper pressure port plug (square head) on MX-6 and 626. Install oil pressure gauge to proper port. (Scheme 8)
- Move gearshift lever to the "P" position. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Ensure engine is at normal idle speed specifications. Check throttle pressure reading at this time.
- If throttle pressure reading is not 63-66 psi (4.4-4.6 kg/cm 2 ), adjustment of throttle cable is necessary. With engine running, loosen both adjustments nuts and adjust throttle cable until oil pressure reading is within specifications. (Scheme 9)
- Tighten throttle cable lock nuts when pressure is within specification. Turn engine off and remove oil pressure gauge. Install pressure port plug and tighten to 43-87 INCH lbs. (5-10 N.m). Install left side splash shield.

- If vacuum diaphragm (modulator) is replaced, vacuum diaphragm rod length (depth) must be checked for new rod length. Proper length rod should be installed after measurement.
- Unscrew vacuum diaphragm from case and remove diaphragm, diaphragm rod and rubber "O" ring. Using Adjusting Gauge (49 G0322 355), measure dimension "N". (Scheme 10) Refer to the appropriate «VACUUM DIAPHRAGM ROD SELECTION»(/mazda/rx-7/fc-1985-1992/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at__vacuum-diaphragm-rod-selections) table for proper length rod to select.

- Ensure inner and outer cables are not bent or damaged. Accelerator should operate smoothly.
- With throttle valve fully open, distance between cable stop and end of outer cable should be 1.80-1.82" (45.8-46.2 mm). If not, readjust cable by turning lock nuts. (Scheme 11)
Scheme 11
B2200, B2600, RX7, 626 & 929
- Place gearshift lever in the "Neutral" position. Make sure gearshift cable is adjusted correctly. Loosen neutral safety switch attaching bolts at transmission. Remove screw from alignment pin hole at bottom of switch.
- Rotate switch and insert a .079" (2.0 mm) alignment pin through alignment holes. Tighten attaching bolts and remove alignment pin. Install alignment pin hole screw and check operation of switch. Vehicle should start in the "P" and "N" positions only. Readjust if necessary.
