MPV

Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect key interlock resistor connector. Measure resistance between component connector terminals. (Scheme 32) Resistance should be 6.65-7.35 ohms. Replace resistor as needed. Connect negative battery cable.

Scheme 32: MPV

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering column cover. Disconnect key interlock solenoid connector. Insert ignition key in key cylinder. Inspect the key interlock operation when battery voltage is applied to solenoid terminal "C". Attach negative lead to terminal "D". (Scheme 33) If solenoid does not operate, replace key interlock solenoid. See KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect the negative battery cable.

Millenia

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Disconnect key interlock solenoid connector.
  2. Inspect for continuity between terminals "B" and "C". (Scheme 34) Continuity should be present. Replace key interlock solenoid as needed. See «KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID»(ref-143050-S25248997802002101800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect the key interlock solenoid connector. Install the instrument cluster. Connect the negative battery cable.

Scheme 35: MPV

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear console. Remove indicator screws and lift up panel. Disconnect park position switch connector. Check for continuity between connector terminals. (Scheme 36) Continuity should exist with switch released. Continuity should not exist with switch depressed. Replace switch as needed. See PARK POSITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Scheme 36: Miata

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear console and center panel. Remove indicator screws and lift up panel. Disconnect park position switch connector. Check for continuity between terminals "K" and "H". (Scheme 37) Continuity should exist with switch released. Continuity should not exist with switch depressed. Replace switch as needed. See PARK POSITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Scheme 37

Scheme 37: Millenia

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering column cover. Disconnect park position switch/shift lock solenoid connector. Check for continuity between terminals "A" and "B". (Scheme 38) Continuity should exist with gearshift lever in any position except "P". Replace as needed.

  1. Remove rear console. Remove gearshift lever knob and indicator panel screws. Lift up gearshift lever, selector sleeve and indicator. Disconnect OD OFF switch connector. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position.
  2. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at selected connector terminals. (Scheme 36) If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator. See «SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR»(ref-143050-S36683444542002102100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity at selected connector terminals. If continuity is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator. See «SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR»(ref-143050-S36683444542002102100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering column cover. Disconnect park position switch/shift lock solenoid connector. Check for continuity between terminals "G" and "H". (Scheme 38) If continuity is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator.

Protege5

Remove the shift lock control unit. See SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at each shift lock control unit terminal. (Scheme 39) If voltage is not as specified, inspect components listed under ACTION column. If no problems are found with any components or wiring harnesses, replace the shift lock control unit. See SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
