Seat Belts - Automatic Mazda Protege BG

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The front seats are equipped with automatic shoulder seat belts. The shoulder seat belt retractor installed in center console, is designed to lock in the event of a sudden stop or deceleration.

When a door is opened or the shoulder buckle motor is operating, a solenoid in each shoulder seat belt retractor is energized, disabling the shoulder seat belt retractors and permitting free movement of the shoulder seat belt. In the same way, when the ignition switch is OFF, the shoulder seat belt retractor is unlocked for 3 minutes after the door is closed.

EMERGENCY LOCK RETRACTOR

1. Verify that belt can be pulled out smoothly and that it moves smoothly when worn.
2. Verify that retractor locks when quickly pulling belt. Remove retractor. Hold retractor at same angle as when it was installed.
3. Slowly incline retractor while pulling out the belt. Verify that retractor locks on an inclination of approximately 30 degrees. (Scheme 1) Inspect webbing for scars, tears, and wear for deformation of fittings.

BUCKLE SWITCH (DRIVER SIDE BUCKLE)

Disconnect buckle switch connector. Check for continuity between terminals with and ohmmeter. With belt fastened there should be no continuity. With belts unfastened there should be continuity between terminals "a" and "b" (Scheme 2)

PASSIVE SHOULDER BELT MOTOR

1. Disconnect passive shoulder belt connector. Connect 12 volts to terminal "a" and ground terminal "b". (Scheme 3) Verify that motor rotates in forward direction (release).
2. Reverse connection from step 1 and check that the motor rotates in rearward direction (lock). If not as specified, replace passive shoulder belt.

DOOR CATCH SWITCH (IN FRONT DOOR LOCK ASSEMBLY)

1. Disconnect door catch switch connector. Check for continuity between terminals using an ohmmeter.
2. In the "Lock" position there should be no continuity. In the release position there should be continuity between terminals "a" and "c" and also there should be continuity between terminals "a" and "b". (Scheme 4)

LIMIT SWITCH (FRONT/REAR)

1. Disconnect passive shoulder belt and front limit switch connectors. Position shoulder belt buckle forward and rearward as shown with emergency handle. (Scheme 5) Check for continuity between terminals using an ohmmeter. NOTE: Verify that shoulder belt buckle is in front/rear lock position when checking.
2. With the buckle in the "Released" (front) position there should be continuity between terminals "a" and "b". With the buckle "Moving" there should be no continuity. With the buckle in the "Locked" (rear) position there should be continuity between terminals "f" and "h".
3. If the above steps are not as specified, replace passive shoulder belt.

WARNING SWITCH (IN PASSIVE SHOULDER BELT RETRACTOR)

1. Disconnect warning switch connector. Check for continuity between terminals when lap belt is pulled out/released.
2. With lap belt pulled (more than 31.50 inches) on the right hand side there should be continuity between terminals "a" and "b" and on the left hand side there should be continuity between terminals "c" and "d". (Scheme 6)
3. With the lap belt released there should be no continuity.

SPEED SENSOR

1. Remove instrument cluster. Check for continuity between terminals "A" and "F" while rotating speedometer cable shaft. (Scheme 7)
2. If there are not four pulses per shaft rotation, replace speedometer.

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect negative battery cable before removal of passive shoulder belt and driver side seat.
2. Remove scuff plate. On Protege remove B-pillar lower trim. On Hatchback remove quarter trim.
3. Remove front seat belt and buckle.
4. To install reverse removal procedure.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable before removal of passive shoulder belt and driver side seat.
2. On Protege remove rear seat cushion, Interior Mounted highmount stoplight, rear package trim and rear seat belt.
3. On Hatchback remove rear seat cushion, trunk end trim, trunk side cover, trunk side trim and rear seat belt.
4. To install reverse removal procedure.

PASSIVE SHOULDER BELT

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove scuff plate. On Protege remove B-pillar lower trim. On Hatchback remove quarter trim.
2. On all models remove A-pillar trim. Remove passive shoulder belt, lap belt and lap belt buckle.
3. Remove rear console, passive shoulder belt retractor, front seat and passive shoulder belt control unit.
4. To install, reverse removal procedure.
