IDENTIFICATION
Note. On models with anti-theft radio system, obtain code number from customer to deactivate radio anti-theft system BEFORE disconnecting negative battery cable. To deactivate radio anti-theft system, turn ignition switch to ACC position. Press FF and REW buttons simultaneously until "cod e" is displayed. Press FF and REW buttons again until 4 bars are displayed. Use preset button No. 1 to enter first number. Use preset buttons No. 2, 3 and 4 to set other numbers. Press FF and REW buttons for about 2 seconds until a beep is heard. After 5 seconds, flashing "cod e" will go away and radio will operate.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS
Transmission Fluid
Check fluid level every 7500 miles or 6 months.
Transmission
Park vehicle on level ground. Apply parking brake. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Briefly place selector lever in all gears and return it to "P" position. Clean dipstick and insert it in tube. Remove dipstick. Level should be between "L" and "F" marks. Check fluid for discoloration and unusual smell. If necessary, add fluid. DO NOT overfill.
For 2.0L, use Mercon or Mazda M-III ATF.
For 2.5L, use Dexron-II or M-III ATF.

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES
DRAINING & REFILLING
Remove drain plug from oil pan. If oil pan is removed, discard old oil pan gasket. Clean oil pan, and install it using NEW gasket. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Add fluid, and check level. DO NOT overfill.
BRAKE BAND (2ND GEAR)
Note. Adjustment information for 2.0L engine is not available from the manufacturer.
2.5L
- Remove drain plug, and drain transaxle. Remove oil pan and gasket. Loosen lock nut, and tighten piston stem to 78-95 INCH lbs. (9-11 N.m). (Scheme 44) Loosen piston stem 2 turns.
- Hold piston stem and tighten lock nut to 18-29 ft. lbs. (24-39 N.m). Install oil pan using NEW gasket. Tighten oil pan bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/mazda/mx-6/v-1986-1991/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at). Add fluid, and check level. DO NOT overfill.

- Remove center console. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Loosen selector cable mounting bolts. (Scheme 45) Push selector lever against "P" range; hold it in this position.
- Tighten selector cable mounting bolts. Ensure starter operates in "P" and "N" positions only. Ensure position of gearshift lever and indicator correspond with each other.
- Ensure lock button returns after it has been depressed. Ensure gearshift lever operates smoothly when engaged in all positions. Install center console.

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH
- Place gearshift lever in "N" position. Ensure gearshift linkage is adjusted correctly. See «GEARSHIFT LINKAGE»(/mazda/mx-6/v-1986-1991/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at) under ADJUSTMENTS. Loosen neutral safety switch mounting bolts at transmission. Remove screw from alignment pin hole at bottom of switch (if equipped).
- On 2.5L, place manual lever in Neutral. Line up neutral mark on switch with manual lever.
- Tighten mounting bolts to specification. Refer to the «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/mazda/mx-6/v-1986-1991/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at) table. Remove alignment pin. Install alignment pin hole screw (if equipped), and check switch operation. Vehicle should start only with gearshift in "P" or "N" position.
