ON-VEHICLE TESTING
Note. On models with anti-theft system, obtain code number and deactivate audio anti-theft system before disconnecting battery.
STARTER INSPECTION
Ensure battery is fully charged, battery cables and terminals are clean and tight, and engine grounds are okay. Turn the ignition switch to START and verify that the starter turns smoothly with normal operating sound while cranking. If the starter does not operate, measure voltage at starter "S" and "B" using a voltmeter. If voltage is greater than 8 volts and vehicle does not crank, repair or replace starter as required. Remove the starter and inspect the magnetic switch and starter harness. If not, inspect the wiring harness, ignition switch, starter interlock switch on manual transmission vehicles, and transmission range sensor on automatic transmission vehicles.
NO-LOAD TEST
Verify that the battery is fully charged. Connect the starter, battery, voltmeter and ammeter as shown in the illustration. (Scheme 3) Measure the voltage and current as shown in table. See NO-LOAD TEST SPECIFICATIONS table. Letters in parenthesis in table refer to letters in the illustration. If voltage is less than specified or amperage is more than specified, repair or replace starter or parts as necessary.
| Application | Specifications |
|---|---|
| Voltage (V) | 11 |
| Current (A) | Less Then 90 |
NO-LOAD TEST SPECIFICATIONS
Scheme 3
Return Test
- Disconnect the motor wire from terminal (M). (Scheme 4)
- Connect battery positive voltage to terminal (M) and ground the starter body.
- Pull out the drive pinion with a screwdriver. Verify that it returns to its original position when released. If it does not return, repair or replace the starter.
Scheme 4
PINION GAP INSPECTION
- Pull out the drive pinion with battery positive voltage connected to terminal (S) and the starter body grounded. see scheme 2
- Measure the pinion while the drive pinion is pulled. If not as specified, adjust with an adjustment washer, between the drive housing front cover and the magnetic switch. The correct measurement is 0.020-0.078" (0.5-2.0 mm). (Scheme 5)
Scheme 5
STARTER INTERLOCK SWITCH INSPECTION
Note. Starter interlock switch inspection, applies to manual transmission vehicles only.
- Disconnect the starter interlock switch connector.
- Inspect for continuity between terminals of the starter interlock switch using an ohmmeter. (Scheme 6) There should be continuity with the clutch pedal depressed between (B) and (C) terminals, and there should not be continuity when released. If not as specified, replace the starter interlock switch.
