DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Main switch (master switch) on driver door controls all windows. Sub-switch on passenger door operates only passenger window. The main switch on driver door includes a power-cut switch that can be turned on or off. In the ON position, both switches can be operated. In the OFF position, only the main switch can be used to operate driver and passenger windows. A permanent magnet motor moves each power window up and down. The direction the motor turns depends on polarity of supply voltage which is controlled by the main switch or sub-switch. With ignition switch in ON position, voltage is applied to a POWER WIND (30-amp) fuse in the instrument panel fuse block. Power then travels to master switch in driver door armrest, and then to sub-switch in passenger door armrest.

COMPONENT LOCATIONS
LUBRICATION
The door window glass mechanism should be properly lubricated to provide ease of operation. The mechanism should be lubricated whenever the glass channel or window regulator is removed, or if excessive effort is required to operate the window. To lubricate the mechanism, apply an even coating of an appropriate lithium complex polymer additive grease to window regulator rollers, shafts and entire length of roller guides, as illustrated by the shaded areas. PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Verify customer complaint by operating suspected system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Inspect for blown fuses and damaged relays. For fuse and/or relay identification, refer to illustrations. (Scheme 2) Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary. If no fault is found, diagnose by symptom. See SYSTEM TESTS.

SYMPTOM INDEX
- Turn ignition on. Check POWER WIND (30-amp) fuse in instrument panel fuse block. (Scheme 2) If fuse is blown, replace fuse after locating and repairing short in wiring, if necessary. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
- Check voltage at Black/Red wire terminal of main switch connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair Black/Red wire between instrument panel fuse block and main switch. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect main switch connector. Check continuity between Black wire terminal of main switch connector and good vehicle ground point. If continuity is present, check UP/DOWN switch portion of main switch. See «MAIN SWITCH»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows) under COMPONENT TESTS. If continuity is not present, repair ground circuit between main switch and body ground point. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows).
TEST B: ONLY DRIVER WINDOW DOES NOT OPERATE
- Turn ignition on. Check voltage at Red wire terminal of main switch connector while depressing driver window switch on main switch in UP position. Then check voltage at Green wire terminal of main switch connector while depressing driver window switch on main switch in DOWN position. If battery voltage is present at both terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present at both terminals, check UP/DOWN switch portion of main switch. See «MAIN SWITCH»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows) under COMPONENT TESTS.
- Check voltage at Red wire terminal of driver power window motor connector while depressing driver window switch on main switch in UP position. Then check voltage at Green wire terminal of driver power window motor connector while depressing driver window switch on main switch in DOWN position. If battery voltage is present at both terminals, check power window motor. See «POWER WINDOW MOTOR»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows__power-window-motor) under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage is not present at both terminals, repair wiring harness between main switch and driver power window motor. TEST C: PASSENGER WINDOW CAN NOT BE OPERATED BY MAIN SWITCH
Note. Use only main switch during this test procedure.
- Turn ignition on. Check voltage at Red/Black wire terminal of main switch connector while depressing passenger window switch on main switch in UP position. Then check voltage at Green/Black wire terminal of main switch connector while depressing passenger window switch on main switch in DOWN position. If battery voltage is present at both terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present at both terminals, check UP/DOWN switch portion of main switch. See «MAIN SWITCH»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows) under COMPONENT TESTS.
- Check voltage at Red/Black wire terminal of sub-switch (passenger window) connector while depressing passenger window switch on main switch in UP position. Then check voltage at Green/Black wire terminal of sub-switch (passenger window) connector while depressing passenger window switch on main switch in DOWN position. If battery voltage is present at both terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present at both terminals, check and repair wiring harness between main switch and sub-switch. - Check voltage at Red wire terminal of sub-switch connector while depressing passenger window switch on main switch in UP position. Then check voltage at Green wire terminal of sub-switch connector while depressing passenger window switch on main switch in DOWN position. If battery voltage is present at both terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present at both terminals, check sub-switch. - Check voltage at Red wire terminal of passenger motor connector while depressing passenger window switch on main switch in UP position. Then check voltage at Green wire terminal of passenger motor connector while depressing passenger window switch on main switch in DOWN position. If battery voltage is present at both terminals, check power window motor. See «POWER WINDOW MOTOR»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows__power-window-motor) under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage is not present at both terminals, repair wiring harness between sub-switch and power window motor. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
TEST D: MAIN SWITCH OPERATES, BUT SUB-SWITCH DOES NOT OPERATE POWER WINDOW
- Turn ignition on. Turn power-cut switch on main switch to ON position. Check voltage at Black/Blue wire terminal of main switch connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check power-cut switch portion of main switch. See «MAIN SWITCH»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows) under COMPONENT TESTS.
- Check voltage at Black/Blue wire terminal of sub-switch connector. If battery voltage is present, check sub-switch. See «SUB-SWITCH»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows__sub-switch) under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage is not present, repair wiring harness between main switch and sub-switch. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/mazda/mpv/v-1986-1991/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
Power-Cut Switch Portion
Remove main switch from vehicle. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals "A" and "H" of main switch. (Scheme 3) Continuity should exist between terminals "A" and "H" when switch is in ON position. Continuity should not exist between terminals "A" and "H" when switch is in OFF position. If continuity is not as specified, replace main switch.
UP/DOWN Switch Portion
Remove main switch from vehicle. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between UP/DOWN switch terminals, with switch in specified positions. See TESTING UP/DOWN SWITCH PORTION OF MAIN SWITCH CONTINUITY table and (Scheme 3). If continuity is not as specified, replace main switch.

POWER WINDOW MOTOR
Using jumper leads, apply positive battery voltage to terminal "A" of power window motor connector and ground terminal "B". (Scheme 4) Motor should operate. Reverse jumper leads and ensure power window motor operates in reverse direction. If motor does not operate as specified, replace power window motor.

SUB-SWITCH
Remove sub-switch from vehicle. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between specified switch terminals, with switch in specified positions. See TESTING SUB-SWITCH CONTINUITY table and (Scheme 5). If continuity is not as specified, replace sub-switch.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Disconnect negative battery cable. Using a protected, thin-bladed screwdriver, carefully pry up rear of switch housing. Rotate housing up and out of armrest. Disconnect electrical connector and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise window about 7" (180 mm) from fully down position. Remove components in order shown. (Scheme 6) Remove door screen carefully so it can be reused. To install power window motor, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Using a protected, thin-bladed screwdriver, carefully pry up rear of switch housing. Rotate housing up and out of armrest. Disconnect electrical connector and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
