Adjustments - v6 Mazda MPV V

ENGINE COMPRESSION

  1. Ensure battery is fully charged and engine is at normal operating temperature. Allow engine to cool for 10 minutes. Remove spark plugs and disconnect ignition coil primary connector.
  2. Remove spark plugs and fully open throttle valve. Attach compression gauge and crank engine until maximum pressure is reached at each cylinder. Lowest cylinder pressure should be at least 75% that of the highest cylinder pressure.

VALVE CLEARANCE

All piston engines have Hydraulic Lash Adjusters (HLA) and do not require adjustment.

With engine at normal operating temperature, place manual transmission in "Neutral" or automatic transmission in "Park". Connect a jumper wire between test connector and ground. (Scheme 12) Start engine and be sure idle speed is set to specifications. Connect timing light and set timing as required.

IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE

Note. Mixture adjustment is NOT a part of normal tune-up procedure and should not be performed unless mixture control unit is replaced or vehicle fails emissions testing.

MPV (V6) & 929 - V6

  1. Idle speed is controlled by the ISC valve and should not require adjustment. If idle speed needs to be changed, warm engine to operating temperature. Attach tachometer to check connector.
  2. Ensure ignition timing is correct. Attach Green test connector to ground. Remove idle adjustment plug from throttle body and adjust idle to specification.

IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS (V6)

Air/fuel mixture is controlled by the computer and there is no provision for manual adjustment. If CO level is excessive, an examination of the entire system should be performed. See the appropriate section of BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS)

Note. All procedures are made with engine at normal operating temperature.

MPV (V6) & 929

  1. Remove throttle position sensor connector. Connect an ohmmeter between 2 outer terminals. (A and D). Resistance should be 3500-6500 ohms. Connect ohmmeter between terminals B and D. Resistance with throttle valve closed should be 300-1000 ohms. Resistance with throttle valve open should be 3500-6500 ohms.
  2. Connect ohmmeter between terminals C and D. (Scheme 14) Insert a.020" (.5 mm) thickness gauge between adjustment screw and stop lever. Ohmmeter should show continuity.
  3. Insert a.028" (.7 mm) thickness gauge between adjustment screw and stop lever. Ohmmeter should show no continuity. If ohmmeter does not read correctly, rotate throttle position sensor to obtain correct readings.
