PARKING BRAKE

Note. There are two different parking brake systems for these models. One for rear disc brakes the other for rear drum. See illustration for an overview. (Scheme 33)

BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM

Note. If vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, see appropriate ANTI-LOCK article for brake bleeding procedure.

Note. The brakes should be bled whenever a brakeline is disconnected.

BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE

ApplicationSequence
If a hydraulic line is disconnected at the master cylinder.Start at the brake caliper or wheel cylinder farthest from the brake master cylinder, and move to the next farthest brake caliper or wheel cylinder until all cylinders four cylinders have been bled.
If the disconnection point is anywhere except the master cylinder.Start at the point closest to the disconnection, and move to the next closest brake caliper or wheel cylinder until all four have been bled.

BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE

  1. On level ground, jack up the vehicle and support it evenly on safety stands.
  2. Remove the bleeder cap and attach a vinyl tube to the bleeder screw. (Scheme 34)
  3. Place the other end of the vinyl tube in a clear container.
  4. The first person depresses the brake pedal a few times, and then holds it in the depressed position.
  5. The second person loosens the bleeder screw, drains out the fluid and closes the bleeder screw.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until no air bubbles are seen. The reservoir should be kept about 3/4 full during bleeding to prevent air from reentering the lines.
  7. Inspect for correct brake operation.
  8. Verify that there is no fluid leakage. Wipe off any spilled fluid immediately.
  9. After bleeding the brakes, add brake fluid to the maximum level.

BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT & STOPLIGHT SWITCH

Note. First verify that distance from carpet to center of upper surface of pedal is 8.27". See BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS table. If not as specified, continue with adjustment.

  1. Disconnect brake switch connector.
  2. Loosen lock nut "B", and turn switch "A" until it does not contact pedal. (Scheme 35).
  3. Loosen lock nut "D", and turn rod "C" to adjust height.
  4. Tighten bolt with lock nut "B" so that clearance between stoplight switch bolt "A" and pedal stopper is.004-.039". Tighten bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164090-S17253440532004072100000).
  5. Connect stoplight switch connector.
  6. After adjustment inspect pedal play and the stoplight operation.

MASTER CYLINDER PUSH ROD

Note. Push rod has an adjustment screw to maintain correct distance between booster push rod and master cylinder piston. If push rod is adjusted too long, it prevents master cylinder piston from completely releasing hydraulic pressure, causing brakes to drag. If push rod is adjusted too short, it causes excessive pedal travel and an undesirable clunk in booster area. To determine which of the following adjustment procedures to use see MASTER CYLINDER INSTALLATION NOTE under MASTER CYLINDER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Clearance At "C" Or No Clearance At "B" Or "C"

  1. Measure and record height "D1" of the Gauge Rod (49-B043-001). (Scheme 36)
  2. Turn the adjusting nut until the adjustment gauge body sets squarely on the master cylinder. Turn only enough for the body to touch.
  3. Measure and record height "D2" of the adjustment gauge rod. (Scheme 37)
  4. Subtract "D1" from "D2" and add 0.004-0.016" (0.1-0.4 mm). Turn the nut to shorten the power booster push rod an amount equal to the sum. (Scheme 38)

Adjusting The Push Rod Clearance At "B"

  1. Push lightly on the end of the Adjustment Gauge (49-B043-001), and measure the clearance between the adjusting nut and the adjustment gauge body. (Scheme 39)
  2. Turn the nut to lengthen the power booster push rod an amount equal to the sum subtracting 0.004-0.016" (0.1-0.4 mm) from the clearance measured at "B"in Step 1. (Scheme 38)

PARKING/EMERGENCY BRAKE

  1. Pull parking brake lever a few times. Depress brake pedal a few times.
  2. Pull parking brake lever with a force of 22 lbs. Stroke should be no more then 5 notches. If stroke is as specified, parking brake is properly adjusted. If stroke is not as specified safely start the engine and depress the brake pedal several times.
  3. Stop the engine. Turn the adjusting nut at the front of the parking cable. (Scheme 40)
  4. After adjustment, turn the ignition switch on, pull the parking brake lever one notch, and verify that the parking brake warning light illuminates. Verify that the rear brakes do not drag.

REAR BRAKE DRUMS/SHOES

Note. Rear brakes are self-adjusting and require manual adjustment only if brake shoes have been replaced.

Brake Drum Adjustment Using Auto Adjuster: When installing the brake drum, adjust the brake shoe clearance: Turn the adjuster on the adjust strut so that the length "L" is 0.079-0.11". (Scheme 41) Remove any rust or grime on the contact face of the drum brake. Install the brake drum and align the marks made before removal. Depress the brake pedal thirty times to operate the auto adjuster.

Brake Drum Adjustment Using Screwdriver: Remove any rust or grime on the contact face of the drum brake. Install the brake drum and align the marks made before removal. After installation of the brake drum, adjust the brake shoe clearance. Insert a screwdriver into the adjustment hole and turn the adjuster in the direction of the arrow until the brake drum locks. (Scheme 42) Insert two screwdrivers into the adjustment hole, and use one of them to disconnect the adjusting lever from the adjuster arrow "A" and "B". Use the other screwdriver to turn the adjuster 8 to 10 notches in the direction of the arrow "C". Verify that the brakes do not drag when turning the brake drum by hand.

POWER BRAKE UNIT

  1. With engine off, depress brake pedal several times. Press and hold brake pedal and start engine. If brake pedal moves down slightly immediately after engine starts, power brake unit is operating. If brake pedal does not move as specified, go to next step.
  2. Run engine for 1-2 minutes. Stop engine. Press brake pedal several times and note if first pedal stroke is longer than subsequent strokes. If first pedal stroke is longer than subsequent strokes, power brake unit is operating. If length of strokes is equal, check valve and vacuum hose between vacuum source and power brake unit. Repair as necessary, and go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Press and hold brake pedal. Stop engine. Hold pedal down for about 30 seconds. If pedal height remains at same height, power brake unit is operating. If pedal height recedes, check valve and vacuum hose between vacuum source and power brake unit. Repair as necessary.

PARKING BRAKE (REAR DISC)

CAUTIONPerforming the following procedures without first removing the ABS wheel-speed sensor may possibly cause an open circuit in the harness if it is pulled by mistake. Before removal, remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor (axle side) and attach it out of the way, where the sensor will not be pulled or damaged by mistake while servicing the vehicle.
