Steering Columns: Removal & Installation Mazda 626 GF

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow SERVICE PRECAUTIONS .

Removal

Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove air bag module bolts or nuts from back of steering wheel. Disconnect driver air bag module harness connector(s) and support rope. Remove driver air bag module.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten driver air bag module bolts or nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Check AIR BAG warning light to ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.

Set front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove driver air bag module. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE . Mark steering wheel and shaft for reassembly reference. Remove steering wheel lock nut. Using appropriate puller, remove steering wheel.

Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Install steering wheel, ensuring reference marks are aligned. Tighten steering wheel nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-4666-S24441848172000071200000) . Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-4666-S11795037852000071200000) .
  2. Remove driver air bag module. See «DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-4666-S17629503082000071200000) . Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL»(ref-4666-S23129898912000071200000) . Remove upper and lower steering column covers.
  3. Disconnect combination switch electrical connectors. Remove combination switch screws. Remove clockspring and combination switch as an assembly. Separate clockspring from combination switch.
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Before installing steering wheel, center clockspring. See «CLOCKSPRING CENTERING»(ref-4666-S14700342062000071200000) under ADJUSTMENTS. Tighten steering wheel nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-4666-S33933870212000071200000) .
  2. After installation, activate air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-4666-S11795037852000071200000) . Check AIR BAG warning light to ensure system is functioning properly. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4666-S20263242432000071200000) under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  1. Remove driver air bag module, steering wheel and combination switch. See «DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-4666-S17629503082000071200000) , «STEERING WHEEL»(ref-4666-S23129898912000071200000) and «COMBINATION SWITCH»(ref-4666-S08216001162000071200000) . Disconnect ignition switch connectors. Remove key interlock cable from ignition switch/steering lock assembly (if equipped).
  2. Using a hammer and chisel, make a groove in ignition switch/steering lock assembly shear screws. Remove shear screws with screwdriver. Remove ignition switch/steering lock assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten NEW shear screws until heads break off.
CAUTIONExcessive pressure or impact to steering shaft assembly during service may cause column to collapse.
  1. Remove driver air bag module, lock nut and steering wheel. See «DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-4666-S17629503082000071200000) and «STEERING WHEEL»(ref-4666-S23129898912000071200000). (Scheme 6)- (Scheme 9). Remove ignition switch/steering lock assembly. See «IGNITION SWITCH/STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY»(ref-4666-S09621675372000071200000). On Millenia, remove dashboard and console. On all models, remove steering column cover.
  2. Remove side and lower panels. On all models, remove combination switch. On MPV, remove shift selector assembly. On Protege and 626, remove shift interlock cable (AT). Remove air duct, flasher unit and bracket (if equipped).
  3. On all models, remove steering shaft bolt and steering shaft. Remove cover, shaft seal, boot and set plate (if equipped). Remove universal joint bolt and universal joint. Remove intermediate shaft bolt and intermediate shaft. Remove collapsible shaft (if equipped). Remove dust cover and remove steering lock (if equipped).
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-4666-S33933870212000071200000).
