DESCRIPTION
The Hot Idle Compensation System supplies additional air to intake manifold under hot idle conditions to maintain smooth idle and reduce emissions. A bi-metallic valve in air cleaner, opens passage from air cleaner to intake manifold, allowing fresh air to mix with rich air/fuel mixture (caused by sustained idle) resulting in better combustion. Valve opens between 145-160°F (63-71°C).
B2000 models, utilize a 3-way solenoid valve in passage between air cleaner and intake manifold. This solenoid is energized by an A/C switch whenever A/C unit is operating.
HOT IDLE COMPENSATOR
- Cool bi-metallic compensator valve to ensure valve is closed. Detach air hose from intake manifold and using vacuum pump, try to pull air through valve. No air should pass through valve.
- Using a heat lamp, heat bi-metallic to temperature above 155°F (69°C) and apply vacuum to hose. Air should pass through valve. Replace valve, if it does not respond as outlined.
