COOLING FAN MOTOR CURRENT SPECIFICATIONS

Cooling Fan Motor (Single Speed 323 & Protege M/T) Test

  1. To test single speed type fan motor, disconnect fan motor connector. Connect ammeter between battery and cooling fan motor connector. (Scheme 1)
  2. Ensure fan motor operates smoothly at specified current. Check current draw against COOLING FAN MOTOR CURRENT SPECIFICATIONS TABLE. If fan draws more than specified amperage, check wiring. If wiring is okay, replace fan.

Scheme 2: Cooling Fan Motor (2-Speed Protege A/T) Test
  1. Ensure battery is fully charged. Disconnect cooling fan motor connector. Connect ammeter between battery and cooling fan motor. (Scheme 2)
  2. Ensure fan motor operates smoothly at both speed operations and specified current. Check current draw against COOLING FAN MOTOR CURRENT SPECIFICATIONS TABLE. See VIEW "A" for low speed operation and VIEW "B" for high speed operation. If fan draws more than specified amperage, check wiring. If wiring is okay, replace fan.

Thermo Switch Test (323 & Protege M/T)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove thermo switch. Suspend switch in container filled with water and heat. (Scheme 3) Switch is normally open. Continuity should not exist until temperature reaches more than 207°F (97°C).

Scheme 4: Cooling Fan Relays Test (323 & Protege)
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect wire harness connector and remove fan relay that is to be tested. (Scheme 4)
  2. Check fan relay continuity between terminals "A" and "C". (Scheme 4) No continuity should exist. Check for continuity between terminals "B" and "D." Continuity should exist.
  3. Apply battery voltage between terminals "B" and "D" and check for continuity between terminals "A" and "C". Continuity should exist. If relay failed any of the test, replace relay. If relay is okay, check fuse and wiring.

Radiator Switch Test (Protege A/T)

Turn ignition OFF. Remove radiator switch from radiator. Suspend switch in container filled with water and heat. Connect ohmmeter between terminals and check for continuity. Continuity should not exist until temperature reaches more than 221°F (105°C). If not within specification, replace radiator switch.
