Servicing - A/t Mazda 323 BF

IDENTIFICATION

Note. On models with anti-theft radio system, obtain code number from customer to deactivate radio anti-theft system BEFORE disconnecting negative battery cable. To deactivate radio anti-theft system, turn ignition switch to ACC position. Press FF and REW buttons simultaneously until "cod e" is displayed. Press FF and REW buttons again until 4 bars are displayed. Use preset button No. 1 to enter first number. Use preset buttons No. 2, 3 and 4 to set other numbers. Press FF and REW buttons for about 2 seconds until a beep is heard. After 5 seconds, flashing "cod e" will go away and radio will operate.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS

Transmission Fluid

Check fluid level every 7500 miles or 6 months.

Transmission

Park vehicle on level ground. Apply parking brake. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Briefly place selector lever in all gears and return it to "P" position. Clean dipstick and insert it in tube. Remove dipstick. Level should be between "L" and "F" marks. Check fluid for discoloration and unusual smell. If necessary, add fluid. DO NOT overfill.

Use Dexron-II or M-III ATF.

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES

DRAINING & REFILLING

Remove drain plug from oil pan. If oil pan is removed, discard old oil pan gasket. Clean oil pan, and install it using NEW gasket. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Add fluid, and check level. DO NOT overfill.

Scheme 1

1. Support engine. Raise and support vehicle. Remove drain plug, and drain transaxle. Remove engine mounting member. Remove oil pan, gasket and valve body assembly. Remove snap ring and 2-4 band servo assembly. (Scheme 1)
2. Install servo piston onto adapter. For adapter part number, see the «2-4 BAND ADJUSTMENT ADAPTER»(/mazda/323/bf-1985-1993/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at) table. Remove "O" ring from servo retainer. Coat "O" ring with ATF, and install ring onto adapter. Install 2-4 band servo assembly into transaxle case and secure it using snap ring. 3. Using a rubber-tipped air nozzle, apply compressed air through fluid passage and measure piston stem stroke. (Scheme 1) Piston stem stroke should be.040-.067" (1.00-1.70 mm) at 57 psi (4.0 kg/cm 2 ). If piston stem stroke is not as specified, replace piston stem.
4. Nine different length piston stems are available in.02" (.5 mm) increments ranging from 3.74" (95.0 mm) to 3.90" (99.1 mm). Remove 2-4 band servo assembly and adapter. Install servo retainer using NEW "O" ring.
5. Install valve body assembly. Tighten bolts to specification. Install oil pan with NEW gasket. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/mazda/323/bf-1985-1993/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at__torque-specifications). Install engine mounting member. Lower vehicle. Add fluid, and check level. DO NOT overfill.

GEARSHIFT LINKAGE

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove center console. Remove boot plate. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Loosen lock nut on side of gearshift lever. (Scheme 2) Move adjustment lever forward to set transmission in "P" position.
2. Adjust the lever so clearance between the guide plate and the guide pin with lever in position "P" is as specified. For specifications, see the «GEARSHIFT LEVER ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/mazda/323/bf-1985-1993/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at) table. Also (Scheme 3) Tighten the rear lock nut to 14-21 ft. lbs. (19-28 N.m).
3. Place gearshift lever in "N" and "D" positions to ensure clearances are correct. See «GEARSHIFT LEVER ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/mazda/323/bf-1985-1993/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at) table. (Scheme 3) Adjust lever if necessary. Install boot plate, center console, indicator panel, selector sleeve, selector knob and upper panel. Connect negative battery cable.

THROTTLE CABLE

Note. Oil pressure gauge is needed to properly adjust throttle cable.

Scheme 4

1. Remove left splash shield, near left front tire. Remove lower pressure port plug. Connect the oil pressure gauge to the port. (Scheme 4)
2. Move the gearshift lever to the "P" (Park) position. Start engine, and warm it to normal operating temperature. Make sure engine is running at its normal idle speed. Check throttle pressure. Refer to the «THROTTLE PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS»(/mazda/323/bf-1985-1993/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at) table. If pressure is not within specification, adjust throttle cable. 3. With engine running, loosen adjustment bolt/nut. Adjust throttle cable until pressure reading is within specification. (Scheme 5)
4. Tighten throttle cable adjustment bolt/nut when pressure is within specification. Turn engine off. Remove oil pressure gauge. Install pressure port plug, and tighten it to 44-89 INCH lbs. (5-10 N.m). Install left splash shield.

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH

1. Place gearshift lever in "N" position. Ensure gearshift linkage is adjusted correctly. See «GEARSHIFT LINKAGE»(/mazda/323/bf-1985-1993/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at__gearshift-linkage) under ADJUSTMENTS. Loosen neutral safety switch mounting bolts at transmission. Remove screw from alignment pin hole at bottom of switch (if equipped).
2. Insert a 5/64" (2.0 mm) alignment pin (or drill bit) through alignment holes.
3. Tighten mounting bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/mazda/323/bf-1985-1993/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at__torque-specifications) . Remove alignment pin. Install alignment pin hole screw (if equipped), and check switch operation. Vehicle should start only with gearshift in "P" or "N" position.
